Caller ID / Location Info - what is the difference?

I am surprised that MS decided to provide a switch to give the user an option of sending location information, but no switch that would send along the caller ID of the phone! Location infomation can easily be incorporated into the tag, but an opt-in process to pass along the phone number would have untold possibilities!

    • Nice boiler plate comment - but why? I can't believe that location information was allowed, but no means of establishing identity? I realize that customer privacy is paramount, and location info is borderline in terms of it - but why was identity not considered as a total opt-in process?

There must have been discussions regarding it - what is the boillerplate answer for establishing identity? Is there any technical whitepapers in terms of how the TAG reader sends information to MS before the link (when a URL tag is created) is followed to the web site? How can consumers be sure that this information does not contain identity information? Transparency is the only means of ensuring that the public at large will trust MS Tag reader.

  • Hi,

Has I understand from documentation, Microsoft doesn't send you the identification of the reader device but instead an unique ID that is always the same for the same reader device.

I don't know, and haven't tested, if the ID is the same for the same device but with a diferent Tag, or reading a Tag from a diferent user.
Microsoft can explain this. Can you?
If it's true, the better. Otherwise soon there will be websites mapping the IDs to real devices!

Has I understand, besides Microsoft internal mapping process, there is no way to map the ID received with a particular device. So de privacy issue in fact is not an issue.

The other side of this is that this feature, to be possible to identify a device in several tag reads is a very helpfull feature and ables a sort of application that couldn't be done without it.
    So... it's to keep!!!

If the user has the ability to turn off the ID, then we couldn't have an application based on that, because we'll never know if it's the same or not.

And that's the problem with the location feature. If the user has it turned off we just can't know where he is, and because of that we can't build an application that uses location as a key feature.

Of course, I think, there is no sense in mapping location to a paralell word...
