Live Tag Scan or History Scan? - Can I tell the difference?

Is it possible to get information about if the scan was performed on a 'live' Tag image, or if it was accessed through the Tag App History? - Maybe as a URL Parameter and/or as a request parameter?

I want customers to collect daily 'point' from actively go 'on-location' and scan a Tag.
But they can 'cheat' by just re-visit the scan in the History.

Is it possible to tell the difference?

Best regards

  • Or to remove the tag from the history, or not register in history at all...!?

  • Hi Morten,

Thank you for your post. You can get this information by using our Tag Dashboard reporting tool. Microsoft Tag Dashboard solution provides a simplified way for you to retrieve and display near real-time scan data of your Tag barcodes and other recognition technologies in preconfigured charts and graphs.

There is a column named Scan Source in this reporting tool. Scan Source provides you a breakdown of how a Tag was accessed whether by scan, direct history(List of Tags that you have viewed on your device), Quick history (List of all tags that you have viewed and flagged on your device) or if the tag was accessed after it was shared via Twitter, Facebook & email.

Use of the Tag Dashboard requires a Scan Data API key and installation of an Excel add-in. Scan Data API keys are assigned to a unique Windows Live ID.
To get your scan data API keys and this excel add in please visit :- http://tag.microsoft.com/developer/ta...

If you have any questions, comments or suggestions, please let us know.

Thank you for your feedback and your interest in Microsoft Tag.

    Best Regards,

  • I’m anticipating
    Dear Support,

    Thank you for your answer.

I am fully aware of, - and have both the Excel Tag Dashboard and a key for the Scan Data API.

The first problem is that these are approx. 15 min. behind (per your documentation). The Tag Dashboard is nice for monthly reporting and such, but not for server side automation.

I now have a job running to fetch daily scan data from the API, and load it to my SQL database for further analysis and processing, - but again the data is not truly ‘real-time’.

The scenario is: Customers go to many different shops in the city. In the shop there is a Shop specific Tag they must scan to collect a Daily Point. The customer can scan each Tag 1 time daily, and must actively go 'on-location' (into the shop) and scan the Tag.

The more Daily Points they have from all the shops in the city – the more chances they have in winning a Monthly Gift Card!

I am developing a small live mobile App that will display the customers personal Daily Point Statistics, so they can follow their progress and winning chances... - But as it works now, - they can 'cheat' by just re-visit the scan in the History. I cannot tell in real-time, if they actually do the scan from the inside the shop, - or just revisit the Tag through the history.

I am currently working on a solution, where the scanned tag is first put into ‘Waiting’ (for backend approval of the scan source actually being a ‘Scan’) – and then when I do backend server processing (comparing customers logged scans to the data from the Scan Data API) – I update the ‘Waiting’ flag appropriately...

But you see, - it would have been much easier if I could just know the scan ‘source’ type at the time the scan is actually carried out. That way the Customer Experience Level of the App would be much higher... (plus, less development and backend processing!)

So the question remains – ‘Live Tag Scan or History Scan? – Can I tell the difference, + in real-time?

My own answer: as it is now. No, you cannot!

So I would just like to suggest that all, or most of the data ( ServiceScanTime, ClientScanTime, ID, TagType, CategoryName, TagNameAtScanTime, TagUrlAtScanTime, TagStateAtScanTime, Culture, LatLong, Operator, Platform , PlatformVersion, Source, Referrer, DeviceID, UserAgent, ApplicationID, ApplicationSdkVersion, TagPrivateName) that is available through the Scan Data API, would also be made accessible through the real-time scan URL.
Perhaps the same way the {!deviceID}, , {!PostalCode}, , {!Lat}, {!Long} are, - or (to avoid very long URLs) in the URL Request header information. Much like a –form post- action would give access to these through a ‘GET ’...

I think the that MS Tag is a great product with lots of possible business opportunities – but unfortunately I often find that ideas are hard to implement, because of ‘this small lack of support’ or ‘that little missing functionality’.

Again, I think that MS Tag is a great product, so don’t take me wrong when I suggest you open it up a little more and listen to us, the developers and implementers, and all the suggestions being posted throughout the board.

Is MS Tag still being developed? – What are the new ‘features’ coming in the next version, etc.

    With all my sincerity,

  • I’m sad
I agreed what Morten said. I'm also developing the similar project which required user must need to scan from the tag instead of from history. Another way if Microsoft tag reader will not bookmark the scanned tag if we can do the setting in the tag manager. However, it seem Microsoft didn't continue to enhance and update the tag technology so far. sad. When do the next upgrade of Microsoft Tag??
