I’m frustrated
I cannot get this to work on the ipad. It went to a default projects page and there are no icons for configuration or anything other than docs and default, txt. I've tried restarting and following every obvious step to get this thing set up and nothing doing. frustrating as hell. Some more obivous buttons or navigation would be a great help. I've watched the video tutorials and i dont have the options even suggested. not good

Every time i start Mides (it happens so fast i can't tell but it looks pixelated) a screen appears, flashes webapps, and then goes to the web apps page with an empty default.text. I cannot get out of this page. further no sftp icon appears nor can i see any semblance of remote files. It's almost as if it doesn't recognize that there is a wifi connection so it doesn't offer the opportunity to ftp or sftp.

i havent done anything that i was aware of but now on start mides just flashes " you need to be editing source with the keyboard to use code completion" and this just repeats by itself without me doing a thing. You press ok and it just loops. no other input is possible other than confirmation of the ok prompt.

its Broken and needs attention. FYI i develop web apps and i have some technical knowledge but that doesn't help in this case.

owens jr you need to look at this and buy an ipad to test it on. I tried to load it on my iphone for comparison but it requires 3.1.3 and my phone is jailbroken, so i wasn't willing to bother with the changes for install.

    I’m confident
I'm sorry to hear that you are having difficulty. I'm Going to do a demo video for iPad in a couple of weeks. I know that the new UI can be a bit confusing.

If you are holding the iPad in portrait mode, then you would want to press the "Files" button in the upper left of the screen. That will give you a popover with a bar that has two buttons on it, a plus and an "Edit" button. Press the plus, this will allow you to create a new project.

After you have selected a project name, and have saved the project, you can either jump right into creating files by tapping on the "Files" button again if the popover is hidden, or if the popover is still displayed, you can just tap on the project name. You will see an item called "Local Files.". Once you tap that, you can get started adding files as you may have seen in the iPhone videos.

If you want to add the FTP or SFTP information to your project, you can, while on the projects view in the popover, press the "Edit" button. This will put the view into edit mode. If you select a project in this mode, a screen will appear where you can enter your server settings.

After saving the server settings, take the view out of "Edit" mode by pressing the "Edit" button once again. Now when you select your project, you will have a choice of "Local Files" and "Remote Files." Remote files are files that are on your server, and local files are files that are stored in Mides' file system.

If you are viewing the remote filesystem, tapping a file will download it. If you are in the local file system, tapping a file will load it into the main view for editing.

I hope this helps, and I'll have the video out soon!

  • Also, I do have an iPad and have seen the flashing alert behavior. I also use Mides for my professional web development, so whatever bugs you are experiencing, I am experiencing as well. I will fix them as fast as I can.

Rotating the device into portrait appears to stop the continuous popup. I am looking into this issue to see if it is an issue with my code or if there is a bug with OS 3.2. Currently, I am not certain which it is.

I have an update (1.8.1) currently in to Apple to resolve some of these issues, but I am afraid that I still see the flashing popup occasionally.

  • Ok I found the ftp option and connected. I would suggest a review of the UI, because editing the project and seeing - (delete) doesn't lead me to tap on the project for FTP settings.

I've tried adding a folder form the server by pointing to the server folder and then going to local system to upload. It logs in and then crashes to the home screen repeatedly. None of the files or the folder are present. A single file uploads no problem.

This is good work and i want to use it for the coffee bar when i'm pondering something but it needs a little polish. Any ideas on the folder issue - i was just going to port my entire development library even though alot of it won't work due to backend calls etc, being able to access all my code would be useful.

  • I agree, I would like suggestions as to what you think would be a better organization for the list of projects. The edit to update FTP/SFTP thing has never really worked for me, but I struggle to think of a better way.

Typically Mides creates all of the folders in the path to the file, but it will not create a folder in the remote server if it has no files in it. Also the crashes could be due to either not having permissions to create folders on the remote server, or an incorrect password. I have seen some crashes due to that.

If your path to the server is from the root, such as /var/www, make sure that your user has permission to create folders in the subpaths.

  • One other note. I went to connect over a remote connection through a VNC client just pointing to a dns which in turn points to my laptop and it crashed the app. which despite powering off, will not now reboot. The only way to recover was to delete the app and reinstall it which means i have to reinitialize everything which was lost.

I think that needs attention too. As a developer myself owen I feel for you but if we don't know the bad news, we can't make it better. If you have anything you want me to do to help in any testing effort, let me know.

  • Is it possible to set the font size particularly for the ipad. My eyes aren't as young as they used to be.

    I’m happy
Another user found that as well, Mides 1.8.1, Which just went live should address that. Also, you can adjust the font size in the iPad settings app under Mides. Please let me know if 1.8.1 does not fix the crash on load issue.

  • Ok - updated to 1.8.1 and so far so good. Sorry on the text size - missed the obvious.

i also port forwarded 21 and set up a DNS for remote access off of the local network which worked fine.

Can you copy an entire folder, subfolders and files to the local system all at once ?

Someone over at Modmyi.com was talking about an IDE for the ipad and they mentioned that nothing is available. Ipad is ideal for this stuff. Coda hasn't done it yet but may be looking. You should promote or at least respond to the thread, get a little support going for a great idea.

    I’m thankful
Thanks, I'll try to dig deeper into why that is happening over the next couple of weeks. Thanks for the tip, I'll hop over to that thread and post!

You can download an entire folder by pressing the little blue less than symbol to the right of the folder in the remote system. It takes a while to download everything, but it will recursively descend into your folders.

  • Ok, I figured out what is happening with the flashing dialog, I was using the accelerometer to do code completion before and on the iPad it just goes haywire. If you go into The iPad settings app and turn off "Twist to Complete" the popup will not bother you anymore.
