What other DJ software works similar to Mixmeister Fusion? (Sequencer style, rather than two deck)

I love Fusion, it's perfect for my needs but I'm always interested in having a backup solution, if for some reason it stops working on a new machine. Are there other good programs out there that beatmatch in this sequencer style layout, rather than the common two deck method used by Traktor, etc.

Has anyone had good experience with Ableton? Can it handle mixing non-dance songs?

Are there any good programs for the ipad of Android tablets? I've heard mention of this iDJ program, is that up there with Fusion?

  • Ableton is in fact DAW software.
So it ships with software synthesizer en allows to hook up other VST based software synthesizers. It can create non dance songs but note.... "create"

Not as with mixmeister that deals with commercial tracks en auto mix very excellent.
I can work with audio tracks but sure not as good as Mixmeister does it.
But as Daw software, since software synths are involved is just another league.

In fact, anno 2015 there is still no application that does the auto mixing and beat slicing that is reaching the quality of Mixmeister.

iDj can be compared with CD players with adjustable bpm and mixing panel.
A bit easier with software. But far from Fusion.

I never had a crash from Mixmeister studio and I use it alot.
Okay, a problem with the keycodes at this moment. But studio runs for the rest fine.

It's crazy how another software manufacturer hasn't come up with a similar or improved version of Mixmeister. It's by far the best DJ software out there for people who aren't used to the old two deck way. Much more intuitive and easy to grasp.

It's a shame that Numark aren't really behind this software anymore - just imagine how good it could if they'd carried on developing it over the years, we'd be on version 9 or 10 now. It's still the best thing out there though, and I guess there are benefits to it being a 'secret' of sorts.
    • I am actually surprised to see NuMark is still actively selling a 2 year old version of MM (7.7). They literally haven't changed a bit since then, but it's still available.

OS'es have been changing quite a lot since then, especially OS X and it's compiler have. I have not seen 1 satisfied customer in the last 6-7 months. Support does not answer -anything-. Ridiculous!

  • As usual, patent related.

So if someone would come up, it would mean another approach but who wants to take the extra costs behind designing a work around knowing that the result may not reach Mixmeister quality.

  • It'd be great if someone bought Mixmeister, the rights to it or the design, and gave it a massive push. With the right marketing it could appeal to a whole new audience - pretty sure even my gran could make a decent mix on Mixmeister in under an hour. Can't say the same for Serato, Traktor, Ableton etc. MM is an incredible piece of software, so sad to see it in limbo like this.

  • If all mixmeister clients would create a new company called Mixguru and find the needed dollars to take over Mixmeister , so sort crowdfunding

In my case, Mixmeister is at least a bit useless due to the fact that key codes are not shown so have to spend a bit more time now to get things wright.

Bitwig is a new star in the DAW world. But : they listen to their customers, someone posted a wish for a new function, a week later, update and the function was added.

  • I really loved Mixmeister but now I hate them. They are an absolute rip off and I will never buy anything from them ever again. I handed over $250 and it worked for about a year. Then when i upgraded to a new OSX it was no longer supported and their customer service is absolutely appalling and they could not fix the issue. Do not waste your money on this rip off piece of garbage

  • Mixmeister started as windows program, so it works more stable under windows.
MacOs is a real pita when it come to updated

Mixmeister should better drop MacOs, nothing then trouble with it.

Run windows 7/10 in a virtual machine, then you can install Mixmeister for windows, also Ilok works on a virtual machine.

  • Why would you use mixmeister for DJing? It's amazing for putting studio albums together but you can't recreate the feeling of a live mix on software. I've tried over and over again but when you mix a set with mixmeister it feels stale compared to using a pair of CDJs or even a software controller.
Also you can get DJ controllers now that are push button only without the usual platter so if you are used to something like that then these with traktor or serato would be you best choice.
All of that said there is no alternative to mixmeister for putting together a mix without actually 'DJing'. I use it to put together stuff to listen to in the car etc. But it isn't really DJing and you really wouldn't trully enjoy DJing unless you do it properly.

  • The problem with Mixmeister is that once you've fixed an edit or cut point, that edit is not always "taken" by Mixmeister, which means the actual audio is often out-of-sync with what's displayed in the track interface. If you do any sort of complex re-cutting and mixing this will happen, has always happened for at least the past ten years with Mixmeister. I believe this relates to poor CPU threading and/or Disk I/O.

For professional DJs, Numark hardware has always been a no-go zone. Cheaply-made mixers that carry phantom tones and distort easily, turntables that purport to support scratching but can't keep turning even with the slightest touch.

When Numark bought Mixmeister I could have predicted the bugs would never, ever be fixed. If anything, it's gotten much worse.

But indeed, still small bugs but in a studio not so dramatic as a performing DJ.

Mixmeister has lost its charm, totally.
Graphics are off, sound became a bit poor and there is a great lack of basics settings. Even after re-configuring the library layout, its totally screwed up again after closing the Application.

There were no updates for a year. Even though OS X has had major changes.
I used it a lot in the past, but now I hate it so much. Support is also bad, I contacted them like 8 times and had 0 response from Numark.

  • Well join the club. I have used mixmeister for over 15 year now and frankly inasmuch as I already was mixing music with Sony ACID Music Studio 7.0 before mixmeister ever did its thing, as I was doing it with that program. Than I went with Virtual DJ, than with Roxio, JetAudio, Steinberg Cubase AI 4, MixMeister Fusion, MixMeister Fusion Live, MixMeister.Fusion.plus.Video.v7.0.8-MelodY, and last I turn to Traktor.

All of the previous version of mixmeister have all collapsed when Mixmeister was taken over by inmusic store, which at first was called or owned by Numark. The Mixmeister tech staff has always been slow in responding to the problem I would encounter with it and frankly most of the time I would end up fixing the problems myself, which took a lot of my personal time. The newest version of Mixmeister is 7.7 and you if had bought Fusion plus video in the past, which does not work any longer you can get 7.7 paying them 21 dollars.

The down side to 7.7 is it comes with the Ilok program, which will not let you open mixmeister without having your license in it and the other problem with iLok is that you have to have an internet connection or it will not let you open any of your mixes and the other problem is that when you disconnect your laptop or any desktop computer you worked mixmeister in, mixmeister will not work and one has to reinstall it along with the ilok program and quickly connect to internet modem or a wireless adapter so it can pick up the internet signal towards the ilok program that controls mixmeister.

Oh my I have many years of work in my hard drives with mixmeister and I now feel that I will be held hostage to their whims just to keep my mixes working. So there you have it. I got tractor for free when I purchased the Numark mixer controller. I have not used it much, but its maybe somewhat like mixmeister in that you can ladder your playlist tracks on the timeline with their intros and outros transitions and move them laterally within the timeline. I have never used the automix on mixmeister, because inasmuch as that was the purpose of mixmeister and I did try it at first maybe one or two would sound ok, but most of the time it didn't and I did not like it how they came out. I have master my transition work with mixmeister so now I am so use to it that it would be a shame if I could not use the program again.

    • Do hou use the OSX version? I do. Sync works, but the rest.....
The library settings aren’t even held after closing the App.
I’ve checked Ozone, they are @ V8 now. Perhaps I try a demoversion tomorrow.

  • Hi Domingo. Could you keep me updated about Traktor, and if it ladders tracks in the playlist with their intros and outros transitions? Or if any other DJ software allows this.

This is the key point for me. I want a program that allows a playlist to be programmed in advance but adjusted on the fly.

I'm astonished there isn't an app like this for Android yet. It seems ideal for that form of DJing. I'd love to have something like that as a backup in case my laptop dies mid-set.

  • Ive used Sonic Foundry's Acid Music, which then became Sony Acid Music. Was awesome software for making mixes, but definitely wasnt geared specifically towards being made for DJ mixes. I just twisted it to my needs to make my mixes and it worked out.

The most promising software I have only seen with what I envisioned as being best suited for Timeline based DJ mixing without me having to 'twist things around' in Sony Acid, was Mixmeister (which never seemed to work for me on my Mac), and MashUp 2 by MixedinKey. Both of these software had potential, but dropped the ball. Ive been searching and hoping for over 10+ years now, but it looks like no one will ever make something amazing in this niche area.

I will forever keep my fingers crossed, but I wouldnt hold my breath.

  • I’m frustrated
Hi I'm in the same boat. I do like Mixmeister but I swear the output file from saved mixes as a .wav or mp3 have really bad quality sound. It's like the mix is compressed even more than a mp3 at 128kbps.

So I did try Mashup 2 and the output sounds pretty good (much better than Mixmeister) but the interface is pure sh*t. It's really frustrating to work with.

I'm hoping to find an alternative here..

I actually found software called One.DJ which looked even more promising as it was full on DJ mixing software that you could jump back and forth between a DJ interface and a timeline interface. Problem is....theres no way to buy the software and the owners never respond. It also hasnt been updated in a few years and they are trying to sell off the brand, so its pretty much a dead software atm.

Mashup...I asked the owners if they planned on taking the software further, but they are too focused on their Captain Plugins software and said they cant put resources on Mashup because the demand isnt there. For me, Mashup cant handle my projects as they are too involved. But I guess its ok for people that want to throw something quick and small together.

A lot of people love Ableton for timeline DJing, but I dont have the time to learn new software that is that far beyond my element. Besides, I checked out many videos and I dont see what is special about it. I guess the people who rave over it are people that used it from the start and never really worked in other software...?

I gave in and started using Logic. Of course the sound quality is top notch, but it is also very frustrating to work in (mostly navigation for me. even from a non DJing, music production stand point). But were all stuck out in open water as far as any hope of real DJ timeline software being produced.

Maybe I should just give up the DJing, start writing code, and make my own software. ha

  • I guess One.dj has not got long to live anymore, it is for sale.
Like MixMeister, this will cause trouble in the near future because of coding issues.
MM has announced updates -2 months ago, but they “forgot” to say when things are going to happen. Could be 1 week, could be 5 years (and having a look at the current issues and lack of updates, 5 years seems the obvious target)

Hopefully someone buys One.DJ and takes it seriously. That seemed like it had the most potential for what Id expect for a timeline DJ software.
