  • It can’t get any worse. First the incompetent management destroys the print addition with all the foolish changes. Now they have created this web mess with this change and it will destroy the web site also. Who makes these decisions? Your former web site was not bad and I used it every day. This new site is unreadable and must have been made by a bunch of fifth grade students as a class project. Topex is still working for all the people who want to make comments on the old web format and it is better than this unreadable mess of a web site. Morning Call is all downhill and it shows.

Sorry, but I really hate the new web site. Changing things doesn't always make for improvement. The old website was easy ... check the left margin, select what you wanted and move along. This new site is a mess. Color and photos are distracting, and I have to jump around to find what I want. I can't help but feel you are trying to appeal to younger crowds, while ignoring a more mature reader who only wants to access news. I'm dissapointed you have started using cutsie little icons (ahem .... like the dopey little smiley faces, etc shown on this site asking me "how does this make me feel?" Please!!! I am on this website for the news. What's next? Including childlike abbreviations such as LOL, TTYL, etc. Good grief. I suppose I should try to be more open minded, but I doubt I will take the time to sift through all of this. I have trouble taking the entire site seriously.

    • I have to agree with you!! THis website is a real mess. Even a fifth grader could probably do better. The old website was just fine.
    • I'm trying to like this web site. I truly am ..... but I'm tired of the hunt and peck trying to find stuff. Can someone please tell me if the MCall still provides the local and regional weather radar map, with the option for the animated map/loop??? The little icon with clouds, and the temp is lame. I need more detail. Sorry for the attitude, but I relied on the radar map constantly and I think weather and the radar map should be easier to access. We rely on if for commutes to work, looking ahead to team practices, etc. Someone please consider making it accessible again. Thanks to anyone who can provide some information on where to access it.

The morning call really sucks. This new web site is confusing and NOT user friendly like the old site. I also noticed misspelled words, etc. Does anyone there know how to use spell check.

Since websites are the way to reach your customers (readers) then the websites need to be user friendly. PERIOD! This desighn is awful. I know that I used the old site almost every day, but am not sure that I will use this site much. Since the readership of the newspaper has deteriorated to the point of almost no return, then don't you think that you would want to keep the people who at least use your website?????

  • Our congratulations to Timothy Kennedy, Publisher, President, & Chief Executive Officer of the Morning Call for overseeing all the changes in the print version and the new web page. Keep up the good work Tim. I am sure all the users of the web page and readers of the print version owe you a big thank you. I am sure under your expert leadership the MC circulation is hitting an all time high.

  • I’m perplexed
This design is no different than what other newspapers are doing to their sites. You all must be using the same agency! I have the same complaint with this site as those - you are only thinking of making easier for you and not the user. I bet you are trying to make this format fit all kinds of formats including ones seen on cell phones. Newspapers in general are going away folks. How we access and store information is now mostly electronic and until those dealing in the paper industry fully understand this, you are all just digging yourselves a deeper hole. You want to hang onto print, yet play in the electronic media field without a good understanding of how both can work together. Advertising is what keeps newspapers going and readership base is what advertisers want. Did you do a full test with a random selection of your readership base before this launch? Or is this your test? if so, I don't think the advertisers are going to be happy with the readership response.

Oh - not using the goofy icon either. And Valley 610 - too bad for those with 484 - now I'll use the icon!

How not to run a newspaper
Lets see how not to ruin a newspaper

First we will get rid of the paperboys who deliver the paper and get motor drivers and adults who don't care if it is delivered or not.

Next we replace the local customer phone service operations with a firm in the Philippines. When you call about a missed paper or a billing error, they cannot understand you and you cannot understand them.

Next we change the paper distribution locations so all the carriers have to go a great distance to pick up their papers.

Next we let the carriers deliver later in the morning so that many people get their paper delivered after they have left for work.

Next when a person goes away on vacation and call the Philippine call center to suspend service we then continue to deliver and leave the papers pile up in front of the house while he is away.

Next we have printing press issues all the time so the paper is delivered late or not at all.

Next we begin to charge to put am obituary or engagement notices in the paper.

Next we eliminate covering of the suburb's local government and school board meetings.

Next we eliminate a lot of the comic section that we have had for many years and publish the remaining comics so small you need a magnifying glass to read them.

Next we eliminate the puzzle and some of the games that we have had for many years.

Next we eliminate a comprehensive stock listing and limit most of the financial page coverage.

Next we raise the price of the paper.

Next we get rid of reporters, and cut the editorial staff.

Next we bring in a management team and publisher that in not committed to the reader and servicing the customer only the bottom line.

Next we concentrate on web site revenues and not the print version.

Next we redesign the web page to make it hard to read and use

And the list goes on and on and on and on.

Then when the print circulation goes down we blame everyone and everything else.

I have a solution, fire the management team who has made these dumb decisions and then return the paper to what it was and gave the readers what they want. A morning paper that was delivered on time, contained local and business news not only about the three cities but also the suburbs. And get rid of that customer service call center in the Philippines and have it done locally.

  • I’m waiting for solution
I do not see anything profoundly wrong with the new website design, it is just different and actually more useable once you get used to it. My beef remains with the braindead comments format and I have made that clear by both board messages and runaround attempts via phone (Mcall tells me to call the Tribune, Tribune tells me to call the MCall, so I call the MCall back and get a VM that is never answered). There are so many excellent, off the shelf message board programs out there and they choose one that appears to be deliberately done to limit discourse, or as they claim uncivil discourse.

Actually this board format is superior to the one being used...maybe this is the idea...? Unlike the wooden one on the comments board attached to each article, does this board accept copy and paste of hot links? hmm, let's see...http://getsatisfaction.com/morning_ca...

I think I see where their final "honed" version will be coming from...how long till this is adopted?

I'm sorry, but I really do not like the new mc. I went on it everyday and never had any problems finding anything. My time is limited in the morning and I could always get on and read the things that I like to read and get off and go to work. Now it's is such a project to find the things that I like to read. It is almost not worth my time to come on this site anymore. I'll find some other source of news to read.

  • I wouldn't go so far as to say go out of business. But, I would like to have the website back the way it was. It was MUCH more user friendly.
As many others, I go on it everyday and it is so much more difficult to find what I want.

I am not liking the new format at all. I like to read the news, not hunt for it. What happened to the World News section. I like knowing whats going on around the world and would rather read it than watch the AP News clips.
Also I like to post comments on certain articles and now its such a hassle I don't want to bother doing it.
No I am not a fan of the new site and will probably limit the time I spend here and try to find another paper to read, Maybe the Express or the Warren Reporter.

Quite honestly, I like the design. It is clean and easy to read. What I have a problem with is the usability issues. It seems like you put the "cart before the horse." Usability is THE most important factor in web design. As seen by these comments. If your customers are used to a certain navigation, this should have been taken into consideration when you did the redesign. I feel that you went ahead and made the design without really doing your homework in web usability. You have made it "pretty" but left out what your readers wanted and needed.

I hate the new format. Not easy to use and everything is near the bottom of the page now?? The typos, oh well, the mcall doesn't know how to use spellcheck, that is definetly nothing new. I guess they're too busy trying to redo how it looks to learn how to write properly. They should hire some kind of editor or QC person for the spelling problem though.

The new format is terrible. Not easy to follow, easy use or intuitive. The MCALL writing is another mess. The reporting, wording and spelling are all a complete joke. The MCALL has to be one of the worst news publications in the country.
