I’m pensive

Timed out connection issue

Install appears to be fine, but when it comes time to link the two computers it keeps timing out. Then it says I should check my firewall settings.
Machine info:
Lenovo X200S - Win7 64
Lenovo T420 - Win7 64

I have both wired into network (as was suggested)
Still not working. Is there any way to troubleshoot this?

  • Setup: Winxp professional and win7
    Problem: connection timed out.
Netpeeker would not register any trafikk from mwb
Looks like the service part of mwb fails to initialize net protocol

    This worked for me.
removed the program from my xp system, used regedit to remove
mwb entries in the registry (whole dir)
    reinstalled,

  • We have found out a bug in the app where it may not work with .Net framework version lower than 2.0 SP2.
The workaround is to install .Net framework 2.0 SP2 (or .Net framework 3.5):

    http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/...

We are working on this and will release a fix soon...

  • I’m frustrated
    Doesn't work for me too...
    Changed network name: NOK
Put in IP instead of name: NOK
    Disable firewall (Windows firewall): NOK
Tried bluex44's way: keeps on saying resolving then connecting but never works

Both Win7 (one x86 one x64) in same network no wireless.
Seems to me it still needs a lot of work

To bad, looked like fun :'(

  • My setup is as follows XP pro desktop & Xp pro laptop.

After trying about every thing in this thread to fix the problem I found dotnetfx was the problem.
I resolved it by updating it from 2.0 to 3.5 as found this idea toward the end of the this thread.

Since then I have enjoyed it more than synergy with out a problem.

I manage to get this up and running after some heavy scavenging of forum posts :)

My setup is 2 XP SP3 machines, a laptop and a desktop running Mouse Without Borders (MWB) via LAN cables through a 4-port router, in TCP mode. Same LAN segment of 192.168.x.*. Machine names are 5 and 8 alphabets with capital letters. No numbers or funny characters. Zonealarm firewall ON, Windows Firewall OFF (but Service running).

    Steps

    1. Use Services.msc command (Start > run) to change the MWB service to logon using "Local System Account", presumably for autostarting after every reboot. The default setting "NT Authority\SYSTEM" account is not selectable from the XP account list.

    2. Make sure dotnet framework 2.0 SP2 is installed on both systems. (Use Add/Remove Programs view in Control Panel to see which version is currently installed.)

Obtainable from here. Or dotnet 3.5 also works, but not tested by myself.

    3. Reboot after dotnet installed. MWB can be installed before or after dotnet.

    4. Start MWB on either machine, get the Security Code and Name. Start MWB on the 2nd machine, enter the other PC's Code and Name. If everyting works the next screen is a sight for sore eyes...

Just to clarify what MWB is : a replacement for a KVM switch box. It does away with the box and replaces it with your LAN connection. However you still need to provide the monitors and PCs. Its nice but I still prefer Remote Desktops, because it doesn't help much when your 2 monitors are at the opposite ends of the room :)

Hope the above can be helpful to you.

  • I had the same issue, no connect and timeout error. I rebooted my "2nd PC", the 2nd PC that I installed MWB on and all works OK for the moment. Maybe the PCs on the network have to be booted in the order that they were installed ?

Edit : in the order that MWB was installed on each PC ?

I had no problem installing the application and running it on a Win 7 desktop and laptop, for a couple of days that is. Last night at shutdown Windows Update installed numerous items on both machines. Today I am getting the dreaded timeout problem, and none of the above solutions work for me.

  • One of my 3 computers would not connect. I browsed through this topic without finding an answer really. Just for fun (kind of) I reinstalled Windows 7 from scratch (including windows updates) on the machine not connecting, but nothing else. I named the homegroup to mine (changing it from default HOMEGROUP). After installing Mouse without Borders it connected right away.

  • Hi: Here is an answer I think will help. Good luck. S.Graham.H

1: If possible give your machines static IP addresses.
2: in the hosts file (C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc) on each machine, add the IP address and machine name for the 'other machine.'

For example: If you have 2 computers here are what the hosts files would look like.

    Host File for Computer 1:

    192.168.1.1 Computer2Name

    Host File for Computer 2

    192.168.1.2 Computer1Name

  • I'm sorry if this comes across as insulting, because I sure felt stupid when I just now figured out my time-out problem. I have two PCs running Win7 64bit, ran MWB flawlessly for a few weeks, and came home today to a few hours of high blood pressure due to this time-out issue (with the message "no such host is known). Come to find out, the issue was caused by disconnecting my homegroup network.
I don't recall seeing any literature that said a homegroup network is required for MWB to work (unless I overlooked it somewhere), so again I apologize if this is somehow common knowledge. If you haven't tried this, link 'em up w/ Homegroup and let me know if that fixes anyone's problem.
    • Network discovery is turned on when the machine is put in a homegroup. And there may be some relation between network discovery and DNS - Domain Name System that translates a machine name to IP addresses.

Btw, network discovery can be turned on/off in Control Panel -> Network and Sharing Center -> Advanced sharing settings. => This is for Win7, but the path should be similar in other versions of Windows.

  • Here's what I had to do to get it working. First follow the instructions posted by bluex44 except for the "unchecking TCP" part (or do the below on both machines):
    1. Start up the registry editor (Start->Run->Regedit)
    2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MouseWithoutBorders
    in the left pane.
    3. In the right pane, If there is not a string value called !FirstRun, then create it by Right clicking in the pane and choosing New->String Value. Name it !FirstRun and give it a value 9/16/2011 (an date in the past will do).
    4. Restart Mouse without borders.

This will trick the software into thinking its already been setup once in the past and will allow you to get to the settings menu.

    Now,
    1. RMB on Mouse without borders in the task bar and go to settings,
    2. add the remote computer by clicking on a greyed down computer monitor and entering the remote computer name
    3. at this point you might get a "Timed out" or an "Invalid key" response showing below the computers.
    4. Change the Security Key on both machines to something new(that conforms to their rules)--and of course it has to be the same on both machines.
    5. Hit apply.

At this point mine showed the status of connected.

  • I’m annoyed
Grrr.... I don't know how I did it, but I had this running just fine. I had the proper holes punched in both firewalls. Both computers are running Windows 7 professional and connected to a corporate domain. I rebooted both computers today and they can't connect anymore. :(

I tried connecting by IP address. I tried changing the account that the mouse without borders services runs under in both computers. I tried disabling TCP in the settings screen, I tried changing the security key. Both computers can ping each other by name / IP address.

If I can get name resolution on both, can ping both... what else could this be? So frustrating after this worked wonderfully for a few days.

    • Sorry, I gave up and had my helpdesk guys install Synergy. They had things up and running in about 5 minutes. When your software worked, it was awesome and the setup is incredibly simple. I hope you can iron out the bugs in it. If you have a new release that's likely to fix these issues, comment and I'll give it another shot.

It worked wonderfully well when I used it inside Microsoft before.

  • I’m Uninstalling
MWB worked great for about 2 weeks, went on the master computer to find that I couldn't use my mouse to get to the other computers. Tried all of the work a-rounds above (Opening ports, taking out dashes from names, restarting both comps multiple times, using ip address instead of host names, uninstalling than completely re installing MWB, changing the registry, re installing dot framework, updating dot framework to 3.5, changing the homegroup, praying to Jesus, and punching the computers.)
All 3 computers can ping each other both via hostname and IP, I even brought out everyone's favorite linksys G router to see if for whatever reason my newer router was blocking the connection (even though I already opened all the ports). The only thing I can figure is that the problem lies in MWB's program.
I'm done, I quit, I am pulling the old KVM back out, this buggy program is being wiped from all 3 computers. Until I see or hear about a patch that naturally fixes this frustrating issue. This is a great program that I would use and recommend if it wasn't for this one issue.

Computer OS: Windows 7 Enterprise 64 Bit (same for other computers)
Routers tested with: Linksys WRT54GL Wireless Broadband Router 802.11b/g and Linksys E4200 Wireless N Router Maximum Performance Dual-Band IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n
Wireless NICs: DW1520 Wireless-N WLAN Half-Mini Card and Atheros AR928X Wireless Network Adaptor.
LAN NIC: Realtek PCI GBE Family Controller
The 2 laptops are using their wireless NICs and the desktop is using it's LAN port.

I hope I made this as detailed as I could and I hope that sometime in the future this issue is resolved in a patch.

  • When there is a connection issue, there would be a dozen of reasons and it is hard to figure out. We have added logging support to the latest version - http://getsatisfaction.com/mouse_with...
Based on the log file, we may be able to find out the root cause of the issue.

This software has been used for years internally in Microsoft and it is one of the top rated internal tools. We have 10k internal users and about 50k external users after a very short period of time releasing to world. This can be considered a success of a garage project and we cannot have this without a huge contribution from users especially from frustrated users like some of you, and we keep working hard to improve user experience using the tool.

In the new version, user can simply click on the system tray menu item "Generate log" to get the log in every machine and place it to the clipboard/file. User can then share the log by using some online clipboard, for ex.: http://www.heypasteit.com

Getting the log does not warranty that we will find out the root cause but at least we have something to read and think about:)

    Thanks!!!

  • I've been using MWB for a couple months and have had relatively few problems. But now I have a problem.

When the secondary machine is locked, I can't use either the KB or the mouse. MWB on the primary machine says "KeysNotMatched." I have to unlock the secondary machine with its own KB/mouse, then MWB works again, and the keys are correct on both machines.

Any idea? The problem happens only when the secondary machine is locked.

    Win7 both machines. Thanks.

  • I've used this program successfully for a few months, but moved to a different area. While keeeping my laptop, I had a new desktop that I was having trouble connecting with. What solved the problem for me was answering NO (on the new desktop) when asked if MWB was installed on the other machine. This popped up a window with the security code (which matched the host machine), but is also gave me my new desktop name.

Going back to the host computer, right clicked on the MWB icon, and chose settings. I then just typed my new desktop's name into the box and hit apply - was connected in seconds!

Both machines were able to ping each other, but using the ip address did not work. Some odd quirk about how MWB resolves these names I suppose. Doing it kinda backwards worked for me, hope it can save someone else a headache.

  • Hey all, I was wondering if someone could help me shed some light to my issue. I know the timeout issue has something to do with my router. If you look at the crude diagram below is how my computers are network. What I found is I get a timeout issue when my router is connected to the switch. If I unplug my router from the switch and make a connection with MWB, between two computers, it works flawlessly. I was able to control both computers. Once both computers are connected I am able to connect my router back to the switch without any ill affect. If I make any changes in the settings and hit apply or reboot one of the pc, while the router is connected to the switch, i'm back with the connecting timeout error.

What would I need to configure on my router for this to work properly? I've tried opening ports on the router without any luck. I've tried using ip address instead of computer name. I've tried the 2.1.09 and private builds.

    Thanks

    • You were right about the DNS issue. Even though I was able to ping by machine name, after looking at it more closely, I noticed that my machine name was resolving to an external IP instead of my internal IP. I found out the reason it was doing this is because I had configured my router to use OpenDNS as my DNS service. Once I disable my router from using OpenDNS, now when I ping by machine name, it is now resolving to my internal IP. This fixed my 'timed out connection' issue with MWB. MWB is now working great.

Thanks for your help and thanks for sharing MWB.
    • I never considered that OpenDNS might be the problem. I still use OpenDNS and solved the problem by adding my computers' IP addresses to the host files on each computer as per Crazyfaby's comment above:
      ----
"Editing my hosts file (c:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc) with notepad

Put in the ip and the name of my two machines

      And it's work fine.

      Ex:

      192.168.0.3 SouL

      ----
Keep in mind that I have my router set up to reserve IP addresses for my different machines. I'm not sure, but this might not work if your IP addresses aren't static.

You can use this method if you still wish to use OpenDNS.

  • Finally got this working, thanks to the help notes above. Ended up doing several things. Set up is between personal laptop (WinXP) and work machine (Win7).
    1. Did the "reg add" thing and restarted. And followed steps. This got the initial connection going.
    2. Tried copying / moving stuff from one machine to the other. This seemed to work only one-way - from WinXP to Win7. Checked the Services settings by starting services.msc; everything was good here.
    3. Found the firewall settings and opened ports on the WinXP machine. Now I have stuff going from the Win7 to WinXP.

All looks great except one minor item.

How does one get the program running when I am not the admin on the machine?

Every time I restarted MWB, it needed admin log in. (Thankfully MWB was shown to me by my admin and he is up to me using it with the stuff I do between the work and personal machine.) He tried a few settings but could not get it started without continuing to have to log in as admin to start MWB.

    go to "IP MAPPING"

Put the name of your computer (as it shows no the computer matrix and its IP address

    example:
    Laptop 192.168.0.230

then do the same with your other computer.

    example
    Desktop 192.168.0.233

then go back to the home page and hit apply..
    Presto.. its connected.

  • I was using Mouse Without Borders for 2 years with no problem then my old Belkin router died. Was very frustrating getting timeouts all the time with the new Belkin router that I have set to use WPA2-PSK Security.

I tried all the methods above with no success then hit on a solution that works for my setup, so posting here in case it helps someone esle.

My solution was to enable MAC Address Filtering and add the MAC address of all the devices I wanted to use on the network. This info was found under LAN>DHCP Client List. (Easy to find on another computer, but not so easy for phones and tablets)

Mouse Without Borders V2.1.0.9 works fine now on my desktop and laptop - "Bind to IP" must be unticked
