A mute tab for firefox

A mute tab for Firefox, if you are listening to Music and are surfing at the same time, perhaps you have the music on full volume and then you have Websites with sounds or videos preload, this disturbs your music experience. Sometimes you also want to hear sound from the desktop but not hear sounds from the internet, for this a mute tab just in the corner down right could make you turn on and off the sound of the internet and you could still here sounds from your desktop.

I do that with the Windows Volume Mixer (Lautstärkemixer, hier in Windows 7)

That controls only the volume of different applications, but not seperate tabs. (I opened youtube and music player in two tabs but can only mute both of them at the same time). Here a Firefox API would be useful, so that Windows could integrate that functionality into their tool.

Hey Synopsis,

thank you for that detailed explanation;), but this is what i mean, you have to do that, that, and that to mute the browser. There should be just a little icon, on the upper right corner of the browser where you click on it and switch on and off sound, or that you have this icon on every tab, so that you can mute tabs in a selective way.
yes i speak german too, but here everything is in english, so we don't want other people to wonder what i am writing;)

Yes, I agree a little mute button on every tab would be very useful, however I hear this is very hard to do unless they restructure all the plug-ins.

Yes I guess this is really sophisticated for one tab one mute(only shown if any music in the tab) button, especially when you have to deal with Flash music, stream video music, silverlight music, background music...

Definitely! Except make it something in the right-click menu of the tab, not on the tab itself. Make only display a muted icon if the tab is muted, or turn the tab another color, or something.

I am on the verge of switching to Google Chrome, simply because I was able to track down an addon for that browser that adds this common sense feature.
