Firefox sync and tab preferences - Can't you seperate them?

Firefox Sync is a lovely and useful tool, but I can't seem to find a way of telling it what I want to sync. For example, my desktop has a brilliant 1080 vertical pixels, so I always have the tab bar shown because I find the pop-in when opening a new tab distracting. But my laptop has a rather meager 768 vertical pixels, so I hide the tab bar to have more screen space when not using tabs.
Unfortunately, this simply cannot be. Firefox seems to want them to have the same preferences for the tab bar, despite my desire for the contrary.

Is there no way of preventing sync from forcing my desktop to lose its tab bar, or my laptop to suddenly gain one? Or is there some work-around with an add-on that'll handle this for me? As it is, I have a choice between having an awkward theme and distracting pop-in on my desktop, or losing screen space on my laptop.
