all email lost on Windows Thunderbird, HELP

All my email folders have disappeared from Thunderbird along with their contents.. I MUST get them back ASAP FOlders do seem to exist on my hard disk HELP !!!

  • If you look into account settings, server settings, at the local directory setting (bottom right hand corner of the account settings window) for your account(s), is that directory the same as the directory the folders are on the hard drive? If not, you could send me your prefs.js file (from the top of your profile directory) and also the name of the directory where you did find your folders on disk, and I can try to help you re-hook things up - bienvenu@mozillamesaging.com

  • Have you tried safe-mode? It could be an incompatible extension breaking the startup process. Is there anything on the error console when you startup? Your prefs look OK, as long as your profile directory is C:\\Documents and Settings\\Red\\My Documents, which isn't the default, but you could have set it to that. Is that where the profiles.ini points to? http://kb.mozillazine.org/Safe_mode

    1. The Error Console can be found at Tools->Error Console
    Please copy and paste any error messages there into a reply

    2. make sure profiles.ini is pointing to your mail data

    I haven't tried it but from the fine and helpful 3rd party folks at:

    It sounds like your profiles.ini file should have an entry like:


    Name=profilename
    IsRelative=0
    Path=profilepath e.g. D:\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\sheldon



    So please try the following:
    1. backup your profiles.ini
    2. ensure that profiles.ini points correctly to your Thunderbird profile
    e.g. assuming your Thunderbird Profile is in:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Red\My Documents\Mail

    then you should have an entry for your profile as follows in profiles.ini

    Name=OldMail
    IsRelative=0
    Path=C:\Documents and Settings\Red\My Documents\Mail

  • When you expand the local folders account in the folder list (which is where your mail should be stored, from what I can tell from your prefs and your statement that the folders are in C:\Documents and Settings\Red\My Documents\Mail\mail.netrevolution.com), do you see your folders listed?

  • That sounds like a no, you don't see them under Local Folders in the folder list. It is very strange that your Local Folders account is using the sub-directory "mail.netrevolution.com" and has the name mail.netrevolution.com" but a hostname of Local Folders. However, I don't see any reason it shouldn't work...normally, I would expect that account to use the Mail/Local Folders sub-directory and have a name Local Folders. I can try to simulate that here...

    It's unclear to me if you ever figured out how to look at the error console. Tools menu, error console. Can you confirm that there was nothing on the error console?

    Hi Red:

    Unfortunately at this point short of me coming to to your home and watching over your shoulder :-) there's nothing easy that we can suggest further with your existing profile (suffice to say that my suggestion for updating profile.ini does work but for whatever reason you couldn't get it working but that's ok since it requires a lot of geekiness to get it working)

    I therefore suggest:
    1. doing a Thunderbird backup of your profile folder (just in case, sounds like you already have a backup)

    2. Create a new Thunderbird profile
    3. Transfer your email from your old profile including the stuff at:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Red\My Documents\Mail to the new profile by following the procedure:

    While you are following the above 3 step procedure, in case anything goes wrong, please take copious notes of what you did, what happened and what you expected.

    Ooops, my mistake, these useless suggestions have made a difference.. now I have no address book or filters which were fine before.. Can anyone solve this or do I have to go the press regarding this faulty and dangerous software. Has someone not created an app to recover data lost by thunderbird? surely others have suffered from this problem.. It seems to happen every time they make an upgrade... or downgrade as it seems to be the case..

  • I’m Angry and going to war
    No threats or attitude here just a promise. Someone has to deal with this dangerous unsupported piece of junk software that persons unknown have foisted upon the world before others lose years worth of work like I have. There is no help available, no software to recover lost data, and people on this site who are less than helpful, in fact who suggest fixes that do further damage. This can not be allowed to continue.

    Warning! Thunderbird is a dangerous piece of software. it loses email, address books and other data frequently. There is no software available to recover. There is not technical support what so ever.
