Cannot delete in Thunderbird 3.0
Delete on taskbar does not work.
Delete on message pane does not work.
Right click and choose delete - does not work.
After reading this laundry list of Thunderbird failures revolving about the supposedly simple task of deleting emails, I feel fortunate that my deletion problem is rather small. I have several accounts, some of which work perfectly and others where the "delete" button does absolutely nothing. I did find a workaround for those accounts where I could drag the message that I want deleted to the Trash folder in the Local Trash account, then empty that trash and "poof' gone forever. After doing that once, I could also then right-click on a recalcitrant message that couldn't be deleted by the normal button and find "Move to "trash" again as a choice in the context menu. Left-clicking on it would also send it to Local Folders trash. This is all happening in Ver 24.2 running under Ubuntu 12.04. Your mileage may vary.
Problems associated with deleting or moving email usually stem from failure to compact mail folders, especially inboxes. This is because deleted email is not removed from the application until you compact (expunge is the technical term). This can be done automatically by a setting in your email account. Manually is simple enough. On any mail folder do this: right click/compact. This is especially important on inboxes but also, any folder from which you regularly delete/move email.
If you are experiencing problems you probably have a lot of uncompacted mail so be patient the first time and watch the activity bar for its status (at the bottom of the application).
