Configuring AVG Antivirus with Thunderbird

Using Thunderbird 16.0.1 and AVG Free 2013
The best advice I could find is here: http://www.avg.com/ww-en/faq.num-4446

Tried it. No error messages but no POP3 email comes-in either.
AVG Support advises that AVG "no longer supports Thunderbird". This seemed to be more of a business decision and lack of tools for the tech than technical one, although the CSR was pretty vague.

So, can anyone offer guidance other than this FAQ link?
