Using Thunderbird 16.0.1 and AVG Free 2013
The best advice I could find is here: http://www.avg.com/ww-en/faq.num-4446
Tried it. No error messages but no POP3 email comes-in either.
AVG Support advises that AVG "no longer supports Thunderbird". This seemed to be more of a business decision and lack of tools for the tech than technical one, although the CSR was pretty vague.
So, can anyone offer guidance other than this FAQ link?

CHAMP0If they are still providing a AVG proxy that you connect to, whether or not they formally support Thunderbird or not shouldn't matter. What they may have really dropped is an optional add-on that adds a toolbar to provide a button to reporting spam due to not being able to keep pace with Thunderbird's release schedule.
Try following the 2013 instructions in http://www.avg.com/ww-en/faq.pnuid-13... , the ones you pointed to are for 2012.
