Creating Rules in 3.1.2 for all accounts

In the previous version of Thunderbird, all mail accounts were dumped into a collective 'inbox'. From this inbox, subfolders could be created for filters, etc. In the new version (3.1.2), all accounts are kep seperate. And even the inbox under 'unified folders' does not allow the creation of subfolders. How do I create a subfolder with filters that apply to all my accounts?

  • If your accounts are POP accounts, you can choose to have the email for all accounts delivered to your "Global Inbox" (i.e., the "Inbox" under "Local Folders"). To configure where incoming mail for a particular (POP) account is delivered, go to "Tools->Account Settings", then "Server Settings" under the account; click the "Advanced" button (lower right-hand corner), then select the desired destination for the incoming messages for that account.

If you deliver the incoming mail for an account to the "Global Inbox" or the inbox of another account, then a further option allows you to choose whether or not to include that account when you "Get Mail".

Configuring incoming mail delivery to a single inbox will allow you to apply filters in the same manner as in TB2.

Finally, because TB's view of an IMAP account merely represents the message store on the server, the inbox of an IMAP account cannot be combined with a "Local Folders" inbox or the inbox of any other account. Thus, you would need to create separate filters for those accounts.

  • As C. Ellicott so rightly points out, I did not answer the question. Unfortunately, as you have discovered, you can't create a subfolder in the "Unified Folders" view; that view is merely an alternate representation of the actual account structure as seen in the "All Folders" view. Since you can't create a subfolder, you can't create a filter to go with it.

It is possible that I am mistaken, because I personally do not use the "Unified Folder" view; however, neither a contextual menu nor the main menu allow the creation of subfolders for the "Inbox".

    C. Ellicott: If you are also using the "Unified Folders" view, it is possible that the "view" needs to be "refreshed"; switch to the "All Folders" view to see if your IMAP folders are present in that view. If they are, then switch back to "Unified Folders" again to see if the folders are reflected in that view. If not, please start a new topic to keep your issue (IMAP folders not displayed) separate from bandmaneiu (Creating rules for all accounts).

  • I’m pissed!
When I upgraded to 3.1.2, I lost all my subfolders previously created. Anyone out there who can help? I'm really desperate as they were very important to my business
