Email Account Folder Expansion Triangles Too Tiny!

Dear Sirs:

I'm currently running:

Windows System 7 - Pre-Service Pack 1

Thunderbird/3.1.10

Things have been running well for the last year of updates. Only one
thing... Since around the time I got my new mouse (Logitech MX518 --
great new fine tunable adjustable mouse!) I have a little trouble lining
up to click the tiny little triangles to the left of each of my email
accounts in order to expand to view the folders (Inbox, Drafts,
Templates, Sent, Trash, etc.). Since my last correspondence I am happy
to report that the little triangles used to toggle between the views
(of: All Folders, Unread Folders, Favorite Folders, Recent Folders, and
Unified Folders) have been increased to a more noticeable and user
friendly size! Could you do the same for the email account expansion triangles please?

While you're at it you can increase the size of the triangle associated with the "Get Mail" button! This triangle brings up the "Get All New Messages" choice, as well as a list of the email accounts. A little more room to click with the mouse would go a long way towards making it more user friendly.

Thank you.

Sincerely,
Cliff

  • They are pretty small - but they seem not out of scale. (zoomed screen shot below)
Still, it should be possible to land spot on.
Have you fully tweaked mouse settings in the OS?

Note, as a work around - you don't need to click those triangles to expand, either in the folder pane or message list. Double click on the item collapses and expands.

    Dear Wayne,

I discovered that workaround the other day. I strive to minimize keystrokes and mouse clicks where ever possible. If those triangles could be just a little bit bigger, as well as the tiny triangle on the right side of the Get Mail button too! You don't want to know how many times I've accidentally opened up a "Write" message because I just missed clicking the little triangle -- which I do quite often to access "Get All New Messages."

Previously, the tiny All Folders, etc. triangles were enlarged in response to the mayhem that ensued after a previous update to Thunderbird which changed the default from All Folders to something else (Unified Folders?) that was quite disturbing. Thanks.

    Sincerely,
    Cliff

  • It is so irritating when you're moving emails from the Thunderbird inbox, to folders elsewhere, to find that the focus has left the inbox because you missed the tiny triangle next to a high-level folder name like 'finance'.

It would help if the sensitive area in the tiny triangle in Thunderbird was expanded to include all the white space to the left.

Then a click to the left of, or inside, the tiny triangle before the folder name would expand/collapse, and a click on the yellow folder icon, or the name to the right of it, would switch focus into that folder. I too don't like double-clicking.

  • Vendeka, you've lost me (citing ordered steps in your process would be helpful). I'm guessing your use case is drag and drop. There is no need to mouse over a triangle for that use case. Just mouse over the text of the folder name and hold the message there and the folder springs open.

  • Yes, it's drag and drop. Here's the step by step process:
Click on Inbox, go down the messages received. Highlight a message to be filed.
Go to a top level folder and click the tiny tiny triangle to open its subfolders.
Drag the Inbox email to the subfolder and release.
Optionally click the tiny triangle to close the upper folder.
    Repeat.

I have a hierarchy of email folders, 32 at the top level which is more than a page can hold when they're all collapsed, worse when one is open. Holding the mouse over a folder is slow because first I'd have to wait for the list of folders to scroll down/up and then wait again for the upper level folder to open.

Once you know about the detours it helps (thanks!) but it would be better if the sensitive space around the triangle was bigger .

  • In that case, you may be using the wrong tool for the job.

Instead, try right click on the message, pick Move, , , etc.
And, if you are using version 5, the "recent" functionality has been fixed. So you can do Move | Recent | and then pick from 1 of the 12 most recently used folders.

    Does that help?

    Dear Sirs:

Oh my G-d! I just downloaded the ver 5 update... Now everything is harder to see because the contrast is very low in the toolbar and menu. And, the transparency of the top of the Thunderbird window causes distractions on top of that. This G.U.I. is taking one step forward and two steps backward... Plus the issues previously brought up that have NOT been addressed. Please see:

The useabilty/friendliness of Thunderbird has greatly diminished! Aarrgghhh!

  • Wayne wrote earlier:

Yes you do, when moving messages, otherwise the focus shifts.

    > Instead, try right click on the message, pick Move, , , etc.

No, tried that. It's OK if it is a recent destination, but slower otherwise. Plus the problem that, if you drop a message into the wrong folder by a slip of the mouse - which happens sometimes - it's harder to retrieve. It won't be the next-door folder, it could be almost anywhere.

Thanks for the suggestions... Let's get back to the original problem: the triangles are too small!
