How do I export folders as mbox files? Thanks. Chris

I want to transfer emails to a mac, in mbox format. How do I export folders from Thunderbird, to an external hardrive?

  • According to some information I've seen, the folders are already in 'mbox' format -- or very close to it (in the filename WITHOUT the ".msf" extension). See the following article for how to locate your profile and the files in it (including the mail files):

Just run TB on your Mac -- I do.

If you're dead set on using Mail, the folders at the "top level" of the account (Inbox, Trash, Sent, etc.) are in files. Subfolders of those folders are in a directory named "[parentfoldername].sbd" in the same directory as the "parent" folder. For example, if you had a subfolder of "Inbox" named "Important", in the same directory as the "Inbox" and "Inbox.msf" files there would be a "Inbox.sbd" directory. In that directory would be the files "Important" and "Important.msf".

  • Did you create the ".sbd" directory in the "parent" folder, then place the "important" file in that directory ?

If you did, and the "important folder" didn't show up in TB, remove the "important" file and the ".sbd" directory, start TB and CREATE the "important" sub-folder in TB. This should create the directory, "important" file, and ."important.msf" file. Quit TB and replace the "important" file with your copy and delete the ".msf" file, making sure the owner/group/permissions/ACL are the same as those of the files TB created. Restart TB, control-click on the "important" folder, choose "Properties" from the contextual menu, then click the "Rebuild Index" button.

  • I know there's my previous reply here, but I can't see it at the moment (it's a Get Satisfaction problem). However, after revisiting this topic I realized that my last reply was bogus -- you're NOT trying to get your emails into Thunderbird on the Mac, but into some other mail program in "mbox" format.

If you ARE trying to get them into TB on your Mac, then ignore this reply.
