I’m freakin' out!

My Mail Account Folders Don't Display

When I click on "Read messages," I get no response and my mail folders are not appearing in the left viewing pane.

They were there last time I opened T-Bird, but when I started it up this time, they were gone. I have already closed the application and re-opened it and that didn't work.

Help!!!!!!!!!

  • I suspect you see no folders because you're using the "Unread" folder view; you probably don't have any unread messages. Use the "View->Folders->All" menu selection to see all your accounts/folders.
    • Sorry, no. That's not the problem. If you click on the screen shot above, you will see that the folder view setting is "unified." I have scrolled through all the different view options and it makes no difference whatsoever.

It is worth noting that I have "searched" for one of my email account addresses and that does return what I would judge to be a more or less appropriate number of messages found. So something -- I'm guessing -- is telling T-Bird to look for my folders in the wrong place on the one hand, but not on another, if that makes any sense...

  • This reply was removed on 2010-08-17.

  • I’m somewhat relieved...
I just reinstalled version 3.0 and all the files magically re-appear. Something must be buggy in the most recent version, which I accepted an update for shortly before this problem surfaced.

I think I'll stick with 3.0 for the time being...

So it is...my bad. There is/was a bug report for exactly your symptoms ("Unified" folder view blank), but it was closed as being caused by extensions. That was going to be my next suggestion -- to start TB in "Safe Mode":
    http://kb.mozillazine.org/Safe_mode

Are you (or were you, with 3.1.2) using any extensions ? If so, which ones ?

  • If you get an opportunity, and are so inclined, you might be able to help us figure out why this occurred.

    Reinstall 3.1.2
Reinstall 3.1.2 using the same steps you did when the problem occurred. Start TB and go to "Tools->Account Settings". If you see your accounts, skip to Find prefs.js.

    Check accounts
Reinstall 3.1.2, then go into the Configuration Editor:
    • "Preferences" (Mac/Linux) / "Options" (Win)

    • "Advanced"

    • "General"

    • Click the "Config Editor..." button (lower right)

    • Click the "I'll be careful, I promise!" button

    • Type (without the quotes) "ntmanager" in the "Filter:" textbox

    • If the "mail.accountmanager.accounts" variable lists multiple accounts, continue with Find prefs.js, below

    • Close the Configuration Editor window

    • Close the "Preferences"/"Options" window

    Find prefs.js
Locate your profile folder; if you don't know where it is, see:
    http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_fol...

For each profile (if there is more than one), locate the 'prefs.js' file in the profile. If you're not sure where to find 'prefs.js', see:
    http://kb.mozillazine.org/Files_and_f...

Make a copy of the 'prefs.js' files and save them elsewhere, naming the files 'prefs-1.js' for the first profile, 'prefs-2.js' for the second profile, etc.

    Reinstall 3.0.x
Reinstall your "working" version of Thunderbird.

If you don't want to do this, that's perfectly OK; but it would be appreciated. If you do decide to do it (no hurry!), post a reply indicating whether your accounts were visible in the first step, above.
