My unified inbox went blank, individual inboxes work. - ANSWERED: rebuild unified folders

Yesterday, for seemingly no reason at all, my unified inbox stopped working. It still appears as a unified inbox, but when I click on the "inbox" heading above the individual email addresses, it just shows a blank space. The individual boxes still show messages. What gives?

  • Is there anything on the error console (tools | error console) when you click on the unified folders inbox?

Does this happen in safe-mode? http://kb.mozillazine.org/Safe_Mode

  • Two errors. When I click on an individual inbox, I get this:

Error: uncaught exception: [Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x80550005 [nsIMsgFolder.msgDatabase]" nsresult: "0x80550005 ()" location: "JS frame :: chrome://messenger/content/mailWidgets.xml :: parseFolder :: line 2089" data: no]

When I click on the unified inbox, I get this:

    Error: this._sort[aIndex] is undefined
    Source File: file:///C:/Program%20Files%20(x86)/Mozilla%20Thunderbird/modules/dbViewWrapper.js
    Line: 1542

In safe mode, the problem still occurs, and I still get the error when clicking on the unified inbox, but not when clicking on an individual inbox.

  • Do you see the contents of the individual Inbox?

you might try bringing up the properties dialog on the individual inbox and pick repair folder and see if that helps. But I kinda doubt it will help with the Unified Inbox. It seems to have got stuck with a bad list of sort columns, the remembered sort order. Or else something else is wrong and the sort stuff is the first place where the bustage shows. You could try using this info:

    http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_fol...

to find the Smart Mailboxes sub-directory of the Mail directory in your user profile directory, shutdown Thunderbird, and delete Inbox.msf from that directory, and restart Thunderbird. Backing up your profile first would probably be a good idea as well.

  • Yeah, I can see the contents of the individual boxes, as pictured in the first post of this thread.

I'll do as you've suggested, and report back. At least I already know where my profile folder is -- I have it set to a specific folder on an external drive.

  • No go. I repaired every individual inbox, shut down thunderbird, deleted Inbox.msf, restarted. Problem persists. Except now, my error code is this when clicking on the unified inbox:

Error: uncaught exception: [Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x80070057 (NS_ERROR_ILLEGAL_VALUE) [nsIRDFService.GetResource]" nsresult: "0x80070057 (NS_ERROR_ILLEGAL_VALUE)" location: "JS frame :: file:///C:/Program%20Files%20(x86)/Mozilla%20Thunderbird/modules/virtualFolderWrapper.js :: anonymous :: line 165" data: no]

  • You deleted the Inbox.msf file from the smart folders directory? Do you have any saved searches that you care about, other than the Unified Folders? If not, you could try this:

    shutdown TB
delete virtualFolders.dat from the root of your profile directory
remove the contents of the smart mailboxes directory
    restart

This will rebuild all your unified folders. Again, be sure you have a backup of your profile before doing this.

  • I can tell you that I had been experiencing some other message glitches just before this happened. Specifically, some messages would take a few tries to delete, or I'd end up with messages coming in twice, one of which would show up in my inbox with a blank subject line. I suppose I should have repaired my folders, but didn't know about that function.

  • Happened again today, for no apparent reason again.

I can tell you that I'm using Thunderbird on a second computer that hasn't had any problems. The error today occurred some time after I had checked mail on the second computer.

Deleting those files worked to fix the problem again. But it'd be nice if it didn't keep happening.

  • Important note on following the directions above -- the "Smart Mailboxes" directory is under the "Mail" directory. I thought I didn't have one at all. Once I found the location and cleared it (with TB down), it did fix on restart.

  • I hope someone can help me. I tried the steps here, but to no avail. Here is my situation: I recall reading on another thread in Mozillazine that using MozBackUp to migrate/backup email and settings could somehow corrupt TB3's "Unified Folder" option, making it completely disappear. I have used MozBackUp in the past to always backup and restore all my emails. However, since updating to TB 3.1 (a long-time ago) I have NEVER been able to see/view/access a Unified Folders option using the arrow buttons at the top of the folder pane. I thought the techniques listed here by David would fix it (finally), but it did not work. Since this seems to be a known (but little discussed) error, is there ANY way to fix this? I have one Pop3 account that I simply must keep all the emails to, and am afraid I will never be able to use the Unified Folders option with future versions of TB. Any thoughts?

For clarities sake, when I click on the arrows, I only get the following views:
All Folders > Unread Folders > Favorite Folders > Recent Folders >(Cycles back to All Folders).

Specs: Windows 7 64 Bit, Thunderbird 3.1.10, MozBackUp 1.4.10 (have not used in a long time). I looked on the MozBackUp site and there is no fix listed for this explicitly in the change log to 1.5.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

  • Hi David,

Thanks for the reply! First, I had tried using the View > Folders > Unified but it, too, failed to work and would just stay on the "All Folders" view. I also opened up the Error Console at one point, but honestly, I really did not know what I was looking for (there were a number of errors in it).

Still, after posting this last night, I finally bit the bullet and just wiped out my install and profile, started from scratch (three of my four accounts were IMAP so I spent some time archiving and cleaning up my one lone POP account), and reinstalled TB with a fresh profile. It works now. Extreme, I know, but I really appreciate you getting back to me. My extreme measures probably won't help others with the same problem though.

    Thanks again!

  • I’m Confused
    Hi!

I am running into some trouble with my "unified inbox" setting. I have 2 accounts (both IMAP), and when I select each inbox individually, I am able to see the contents of that mailbox just fine. However, when I select to view the entire unified inbox, the mailbox is blank. It was working before I had to reinstall windows on my computer, and then I used Mozbackup to copy over the information, and since then I have not gotten that unified thing working. Is there some setting I need to adjust to get my unified box working?

    Thanks!
    -Jon

  • Trebnoj, this probably won't help much, but I know that my lingering issue with Unified Inbox not working had to do with a long-standing bug in MozBackup that, for some reason, borks unified inbox if you use it to backup your TB emails and files. I was only ever able to rectify it by uninstalling my TB and my profile, and starting from scratch with my accounts newly installed and NOT using MozBackup to re-import old emails. If both accounts are IMAP, and simply sync/map with all your emails online, they should all be there anyway. Hope that helps!

  • Josh, that sounds quite odd.

Are your steps to reproduce simply:
    1. stop thunderbird in unified view
    2. run mozbackup
    3. restart thunderbird

results - unified view is borked

  • Wayne, not quite. This is based on the fact that I had this problem for a long time and when I looked into it researching online, many commentators on the MozillaZine forums mentioned having this problem, and all said it was traced -- in their experience -- to using MozBackUp.

I will say that, in my experience, I had this problem with multiple versions of Thunderbird, uninstalling, reinstalling, and yet consistently using MozBackUp to restore my emails. Every time I did this, Unified Inbox would not appear as an option. Finally, several months ago, I decided to just reinstall a fresh version with a fresh profile and NOT restore my previous emails using MozBackUp, and lo and behold, Unified Inbox appeared as an option and worked (for me) for the first time since it was introduced. For whatever reason, a legacy bug in MozBackUp or restoring from a MozBackUp file seems to have been the culprit. (All purely from a user perspective, of course).

  • Problem: somehow my message list was emptied for my inbox. New messages are on the list, but old messages that had been left in the inbox are not on the list, even though the messages are still in the Thunderbird database. How can I recapture the earlier messages that disappeared from the list? Any help would be much appreciated.
