I’m sad

repair thunderbird inbox - corrupted

Using Thunderbird 2.

Thunderbird crashed and now I don't have any messages in my inbox. However, the inbox file in my profile is 1.75GB. If I compact the inbox, the file shrinks to 0 bytes.

So, the messages are in there, but there is some sort of corruption. Is there a repair method/utility available?

  • David,

zero byte file is a classic sign of antivirus trouble. What antivirus program are you running?

until the next person responds to help, see https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:...

Not a virus. It's a corruption. The compacting is what creates the 0 byte file....because of the corruption.

Close Thunderbird, delete the .MSF file associated with the problem folder and reopen Thunderbird. The .MSF will be re-created.

You might want to actually backup the .MSF just in case, but it should be safe to delete it. Don't delete the other file (with the same name but without an extension). That is the actual folder with the messages.

  • Yes, done.

I'm the one that posted the original problem. I found the answer to MY problem somewhere else. So, I posted (copied) the solution to MY problem here. In my case, my computer crashed (not Thunderbird specifically) and it caused a corruption in the file. Through civil dialog with someone on another site, this is what was needed to fix MY problem.

    Done.

For your issue, uninstall the program, use outlook or web mail, go away.
    Done.

You talk too much. You just want to rant. Nobody is going to help you.

  • Surely no one like you.

Simply, someone interested in detailed reports looking for feedback and willing to provide solutions.

This is a forum. Everyone's entitled. Grow up.

  • I’m happy my problem is resolved. How about you?
Nobody will help you. You only spew hatred for the product with no "detailed reports" and you have not given any constructive "feedback". How can anyone possibly help you? There are plenty of people who want to help, but you have not given them a reason to do so.

It is quite predictable that individuals with low maturaty want others to "grow up".

You need to relax. I know you didn't want to hear what I had to say because you are frustrated. I get that, but you need to consider how you present yourself if you wish to be helped (especially by volenteers). In other words, consider the audience. This is a free product with volenteers that help people like us. Yelling at people who you BUY service from might be ok, but not for volenteers of a FREE product.

If you want to solve your problem (rather than going to a different product) I would highly suggest that you start a new thread and construct your question and problem in a precise and informative way. Don't attack. If you continue to rant and flame in this thread at me or mozilla, you are doing yourself no good. You only continue to steam. I'm fine. I'm happy. My problem is resolved. Is yours?

If it makes you feel good to rant and put me down, from this point, you will do it to yourself. I have unsubscribed to this thread and will never be notiied of a response.

If, on the other hand, you calm yourself, re-group and restart a new constructive thread, you might find yourself in a happy place. Just be patient and someone will help if they can (and feel like it).

After your problem is fixed and you have calmed down, come back here are re-read what you (and I) wrote. You will probably not be proud of yourself.

    unsubscribed

    done ;)

  • I'm not Ann Landers.

I got plenty of help, and there are legitimate problems presented, but a solution has yet to present itself as problems are being found and addressed in due course by professionals here.

    Take a pill, happy boy.

No more rants. Call it a draw.
    • No, this is not an open forum in the classic sense. Getsatisfaction is a support tool _with a purpose_.

Steve, your comments here and elsewhere haven't been helpful and indeed are inhibiting people from getting proper help. For now the solution is for Steve to focus on topic(s) he has authored, and to decline to comment in other people's topics in the manner done here. Steve, a focused, positive problem solving approach would be welcome. If you want to consult about how to contribute in a positive manner, please start a new topic.

  • I’m still in trouble
Deleting Inbox.msf and restarting Thunderbird didn't help. There are still 100's of emails in Inbox, but Thunderbird can't see them. Where can I find a description of the format of Inbox so I can repair it?

  • I’m frustrated
I have a very similar problem, my HD went bad and locked up while I was checking my e-mail. Ended up cloning and replacing the HD. Opened TBird, no folders. Then I copied the contents to a temp file (I can see that the folders (and 15yrs worth of e-mail) are all there in the file tree). Have since tried deleting the .msf files, no change. Tried reinstalling TBird and copying the files back in, still don't show up in t-bird.
Please help, my email server is filling up quickly and I don't want to dump it into TBird 'till my file tree is restored.

OK I got everything back, reinstalled TBird, removed all .msf files, moved old inbox contents to new inbox. Only lost my message filters, NBD. What an ordeal! Not sure why it didn't work the 1st 12 times! Thanks anyway.
    • Thankyou! My message filter edit page got corrupted so that I could not update message filters. ( many updates ago!) If I could just hand copy the message filters out then I might be able to fix this years old persistent problem. I would love to have mozilla have a corrupted file replacement program though! I love Mozilla but can really sympathize with dave's solution. It works for many. When something seems to be a wont fix it is very frustrating. I have kept up a bugzilla report on it through the years. As Dave says The competition works for him. I believe that public software MUST & SHALL BECOME BETTER THAN THAT! Being INSULTED because mozilla ain't there for dave is very sad. I for one am not tech savvy enough to use anything that ain't ready. However I Really want out of Bill's world! So I will save but try this fix if i can. It Just might work after all these years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YES! here may be hope after all. Thanks Kcowboy77!!

  • I FOUND A REAL SOLUTION!!!!!
i AM BACK ON MOZILLA AND IT WORKS AND YES I HAD TO GO TO THE COMPETITION! I WENT TO SEAMONKEY AND IMPORTED MY MESSAGES AND FILTERS.! i THEN MANY MONTHS LATER DELETED T-BIRD AND NOW I HAVE RE-IMPORTED EVERYTHING TO T-BIRD!

SEAMONKEY HAD TO USE ITS OWN FILES SO IT GENERATED ITS OWN!

THUNDERBIRD IN IMPORTING FROM SEAMONKEY HAD TO GENERATE ITS OWN UNCORRUPTED NEW FILES (WHEREVER IT KEPT THEM) AND IMPORTED THE MESSAGES WITHOUT CARRYING THE CORRUPTED FILES THAT SURVIVED FOR 16+ UPDATES STARTING INTO TBIRD 2.?

IT WORKED! AND i AM BACK IN TBIRD.

    YIPPEE!!

A quick thankyou to Glenn. None of the other solutions had worked for me and clearly T'bird itself was in some way corrupted (it went through the new message download process and finished with no new messages - while another machine was picking up dozens.
But, install SeaMonkey and import has worked a treat!
Don't blame you shouting - great solution.

  • My issue started when I had to do a hard shutdown while TB was open. Apparently it was doing a compact on my main inbox (1.6G file) It had renamed the file nstmp in the mail folder for TB. I simply closed TB and copied the file over to Inbox. Restarted TB and it's all good to go.
