Show remote content not working with unified folders inbox (TB 3.1.9)

I'm having a strange problem with Thunderbird 3.1.9 unified folders and the unified inbox view.

The Show remote content button won't work properly when using the unified inbox view. I have two different email accounts (Gmail and a school one), but the Show remote content button only works with emails from my school. I can click the button on Gmail messages, but nothing happens and the button comes right back.

When I try to add the address into my address book to allow it to always show the content, the address book dialog shows a completely different address, one from my school account's mail senders.

The funny thing is everything works just fine when I look at the inbox folders separately, so seems like this is a bug with the unified inbox. Any ideas on why this happens? Also, I get this on two different computers that use the same accounts and it's always the Gmail one that doesn't work right. On my Android phone Gmail works just fine, too.

  • Here are the details (I have a similar configuration on both of my PCs):

    Email configuration and provider -

OS and Thunderbird version - Thunderbird 3.1.9 on Windows 7 SP1 AND Windows XP MCE SP2
Mail Service Provider: Gmail + school mail
    Mail Protocol: IMAP on both
Mail Server Settings: INCOMING 1: server name: imap.googlemail.com, port: 993, Use Secure Connection: SSL/TLS
INCOMING 2: server name: imap.tut.fi, port: 143, Use Secure Connection: STARTTLS
OUTGOING 1: Server Name: smtp.googlemail.com, port: 465, Secure Connection: SSL/TLS
OUTGOING 2: Server Name: mail.tut.fi, port: 587, Secure Connection: STARTTLS
    Internet Service Provider: Saunalahti
    Add-ons/Extensions: none
Antivirus and Firewall software: Microsoft Security Essentials 2.0 on Win 7, Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0 on Win XP

    What I did:

used the unified folders inbox view to click on Show remote content on a Gmail message

    What Happened:

the button disappeared for a second but came right back and didn't do anything

    What I expected:

the email to show remote content

My original post contains more oddities with the always allow content choice and a remark that this works fine when the inbox folders are viewed separately.

Now that I think of it, I've seen the same thing happening at my parents' house with TB that has two Gmail accounts set up through the automatic process. This thing happens with only the other account, as described above.

What's even more strange is that this started happening simultaneously on both of my computers and things worked fine before. I also tried deleting my profile and redoing the settings, this worked normally until I closed TB and started it again, which made the problem repeat.

  • Yes, it's definitely working better. Sometimes the inbox shows double mails, but most of the time it seems to work. One new problem is that the read indicator won't change unless it's clicked (not by opening the mail or having it open for a set time).

  • I've been having this same problem for several months since I added my Gmail accounts to Thunderbird. I have three Gmail accounts, but it only affects one of them. In the unified inbox, if I click on unread mail from that one account, it is not marked as read, and is unable to show remote content. If I do the same thing in the account specific inbox, it is correctly marked as read, and remote content is able to be shown.

I have no idea what's causing this, but I'd love if it could be solved. Version 7.0.1 did not affect the problem at all.

  • Same exact problem as the OP and Mike even in the newest version (8.0) of Thunderbird. I've had this problem for over a year with multiple versions of TBird and have tried several "solutions" including complete uninstall/reinstall all to no avail.
