I’m frustrated

TB3 won't use the deafult outgoing server

I have two SMTP outgoing servers listed. TB3 always uses the first one on the list - always - even if I set the second server to be the default. Quitting TB and restarting it will not fix this. TB will never use the second server listed even when it's set to default. I can delete the first server, then re-add it so that it is second on the list - but this is a huge pain in the ass, I have to do a screen shot first so I can retype the settings.

  • If you go into Edit -> Account Settings and select your incoming email account, at the bottom of the display, there's a selection for Outgoing Server, is that set to "Use Default Server"?

Do you mean Tool --> Account settings? I don't see any option called Use Default Server?

I only see ADD, EDIT, REMOVE, and SET DEFAULT.

  • I see the setting now - yes it is set to use default server.

  • I have what I believe is a closely related question. I have 4 different mail accounts and want to know how I can make an account other than the first the default account used when I click "Send Link" on the file menu in Firefox or "Send to email recipient" or the equivalent in other applications.

Thunderbird's Write window has a drop down list of accounts at the top which allows me to select an account. The accounts are listed in the numerical order originally assigned to them by Thunderbird when they were created. When the Write window is opened from Thunderbird and a folder associate with a particular account is also selected, the default choice is the account associated with that folder. Otherwise, it defaults to the first account in the list, account #1.

I want Thunderbird to select a different account by default so I won't have to remember to change the sending account every time I initiate an email message from another application.

(Hoping my comment bumps this topic?)

I have basically the same problem, I think. I HAD a Gmail email address set as my default SMTP. Then I set up my school email address on Thunderbird, and decided I wanted to use that as my default. So I went to Account Settings --> Outgoing Server (SMTP), selected the correct email address, and Set it as Default. So on that screen, the email address defined as default is my school address.

HOWEVER, when I click on the "Write" button (i.e., the message isn't in reply to anything, & I'm in my unified inbox), the outgoing email address is my Gmail address, though it is not my default. I even deleted my outgoing Gmail server and restarted Thunderbird, but when I click the Write button, the outgoing email address is STILL my Gmail address.

Thunderbird isn't preventing me from using my school email address - if I'm in just my school inbox & click "Write", then it'll send from my school address. Or when I reply to a school message, that works, too. I also can change it message by message, but I keep on forgetting to and am probably confusing a lot of people as to what my email address really is.

Short of uninstalling Thunderbird and reinstalling it, is there anything I can do to get the correct email as my default for real?
