Thunderbird 17 main window title bar is gray and blank (not dark and illegible)

Since I installed Thunderbird 17, I no longer have a title bar at the top of the main application window. That area, along with the menu items below it (File, Edit, etc), is light gray, as the rest of the menu and title area has always been under my Windows "theme" setup. It is thus not possible for me to tell whether Thunderbird has the current "focus" of the system. This is a problem for me.

When I open individual messages, which are in separate windows, they do have a normal title bar, blue with white text. It is only the main window which is missing the title bar.

I did try going to Tools/Options/Advanced/General/Config Editor/(I'll be careful!)/ ... but I did not find the specific preference tag referred to in the help information regarding the illegible title bar problem. That is not the issue on my system.

My platform is Windows XP, current on all relevant updates. My ISP (though not my email provider) is Time Warner "Road Runner." Anti-virus software is McAfee 8.5.0i. Firewall protections include WatchGuard VPN, and security scan software from McAfee and Norton and Kaspersky.
