I’m sad

Cannot send email with GoDaddy intermittently WAS:Thunderbird and GoDaddy email account: sending of message failed.

Ever since I've been using Thunderbird (with private GoDaddy email account), 25% of the time my email fails to send and I receive the following error:

Sending of message failed. The message could not be sent because connecting to SMTP server smtpout.secureserver.net failed. The server may be unavailable or refusing SMTP connections. Please verify that your SMTP server setting is correct and try again, or else contact your network administrator.

My SMTP details are all correct and I have checked with GoDaddy who confirm nothing is wrong with their servers - my webmail also works fine.

I've had this problem ever since I started using Thunderbird. 75% of the time my email is sent without problems, but around 1 in 4 messages fail to send because of this.

Often, I try 5 - 10 times to send and it fails. But if I save the message in draft and try again an hour later, it sends fine first time.

  • So-- first they treat me like a trained monkey and tell me that they cannot help me unless I send a screen shot of a telnet test on several ports.
I reluctantly waste me time complying, knowing that they are barking up the wrong tree because the problem is clearly theirs.

    Then they send me this:
    Dear ,
Thank you for contacting us again regarding this issue. For the last few days we have been experiencing intermittent service with our outgoing servers. This may explain the issues you have been having over the last few days. However, this will not explain the issues you were experiencing several months ago. Our mail servers do not have a time limit on them, and as such will not give you a timeout error when you are trying to connect. Any timesouts you are experiencing will be coming from your Internet Service Provider cutting a connection that is open longer than they allow. I apologize for any inconvenience or confusion this may have caused.

It's obvious that their support people do not talk to each other.

  • Had several issues of timeouts while retrieving mail today. Only GoDaddy mail of course. Outgoing mail hasn't been affected....so far.

Isn't it funny that GD has us looking at OUR setup, when we have NO issues with the SAME mail client on OTHER mail servers.

huh, how's that customer service workin' for ya?

  • OOPS! They took it back:

    Dear ,

Thank you for your reply. Contrary to our previous reply we have not been experiencing issues which would have affected your outgoing mail. The issues we were having were issues with IMAP and we apologize that you were given incorrect information. As you are on an email plan which does not have IMAP support, this will have in no way affected your ability to send mail with your email client.

Presently, we are not experiencing any issues with would prevent you from sending mail over our SMTP server. As this is the case, we must troubleshoot issues on a case-by-case basis. A telnet test allows us to determine your connectivity to our mail servers and helps us to locate where the issue is. Unfortunately, the telnet test you have ran was incorrect. When running a telnet test, please note that the command is:

    telnet smtpout.secureserver.net 25

Please note the space between 'telnet' and 'smtpout.secureserer.net' then again between this and '25' when being entered. It appears that no spaces were used. We would ask that you preform three of these tests. One for 25, one for 3535 and one for 80. This lets us know your connectivity over these ports and the results of your computers ability to access our servers. Beyond this, a screenshot of the error Thunderbird is returning will also be helpful. We apologize for the inconvenience involved, however as mentioned, our outgoing servers are not experiencing issues and to assist you further, we must troubleshoot this locally.

Please let us know if we can assist you in any other way.

    Best Regards,

    Trevor P.

  • Alrighty then, I've had about enough.

.How about recommendations for suitable replacements for GoDaddy? I have about 50 domains to move.

  • I sent GoDaddy a link to this thread and asked that they review, suggesting that they get a tech to definitively determine if it is possibly a GoDaddy issue or if they could actually isolate it as a TB issue, thinking if that could be done the coders with TB would know what specifically to target. First I got back the standard telnet request. I held my patience and ran them as requested, then sent them back screen shots, knowing it was an absolute waste of time as so many of us have had the pleasure of doing so before and that it does not get at the nature of whatever problem we are having. After sending them the glowing results, here is what I got back...
    ......................................................................................................................
Thank you for your reply. I am sorry for the confusion. At this time there are no issues with making an connection to either port 25 or 3535. At this time there are no known issues with our email services, but we are very limited in the support we can give for third party email clients due to the number of issues that can arise, from ISP's, local firewalls and virus applications, to the actual email client having issues and the profile corrupting. You may wish to contact the vendor for the application you are using for further assistance with the error message you are seeing.
    ......................................................................................................................

They won't give a darn unless it gets some widespread press, and unless someone gets the attention of a publication, the message appears that the number of people they believe they will lose over the issue isn't worth the tech support time to define the problem.

  • I’m frustrated
I am having the same problem. After I change ports it sends one or two mails then it's not working.
Godaddy's support is useless, it's been 36hours and I got 3 emails from 3 different people that have no clue, copy pasting things I allready read when setting up the emails.
This is ridiculous. They won't get any more of my money.
However I need a proper email client wich is compatible with their mail service.
I tried TB, Outlook 2007, Pegasus without any luck.
Could anyone tell me wich client runs decently with godaddy?
    Thanks in advance,
    O

  • Godaddy sucks PERIOD. I've tried them in different ISPs, OUTLOOK and TBIRD (ALL VERSIONS) and it just doesn't want to send emails.

I've tried all the Help (if you can actually call it that) and nothings worked.
And all i see around the web are people having the same problems.

I personally use other webhosts, and other webhosts don't have this kind of problem. So the way I see it is to just jump ship and switch to a different webhost.

Hostmonster? Hostgator? whatever. Just NOT Godaddy.
    Hope this helps.

  • Here's a new experience to add to the mystery of why there is a time-out smtp issue sometimes.
I have a little Lenovo netbook that I take when I travel. I've noticed that I can send emails just fine at home, but away from home sending fails completely at some locations for days on end. But at another location it works fine for days on end.
For example, I could download emails just fine in Buenos Aires, but got the same smtp timeout when I tried to send, but I could send just fine from another city in Argentina.
I couldn't send from Western MA for three days, in central MA, a few hours later, I can send just fine. Costa Rica no. New York City yes.

Does this give anyone any insight into what the issue could be?

  • I’m being bamboozled
I just moved from IX Hosting to Godaddy and now I'm having intermittent problems sending e-mails with Outlook and on my iphone. Godaddy is saying the problem is on my end. And I said what, my Outlook and my iphone both decided to have this problem at the same times when I NEVER experienced this on my last hosters??? Am I stupid? I sent their Tier 2 tech a link to this thread - but from what I've read above - little that will do. Time to switch to yet another hosting company.

    Hi all:

I am closing this very old issue as it appears to be a GoDaddy Issue and not a Thunderbird issue. If you have problems with GoDaddy secureserver.net email, check your anti-virus, firewall are not blocking Thunderbird, check your Thunderbird settings are the same as GoDaddy's recommended settings and if you still can't get it to work, please create a new support topic.
