  • It is not Thunderbird that is not accepting the username/password combination, it is the SMTP server. Note the combination of username AND password are used to authenticate; it could be the username that's incorrect, not the password. Go to "Tools->Account Settings"; select "Outgoing Server (SMTP)" near the bottom of the list on the left-hand side; select the SMTP server name from the list on the upper right-hand side and click the "Edit" button to the right of the list. Make sure your "User Name:" is in the format required by your service provider (i.e., just the account name, or the full email address).

    • Tom Kiker: And your username for the SMTP server is correct ? If so, then you need to talk to your service provider -- it is not Thunderbird that is rejecting the username/password combination, but the SMTP server itself. Note that the "User Name" used for authenticating to the SMTP server is NOT the "User Name" shown in the "Server Settings" screen; it is the one shown in the "Outgoing Server (SMTP)" "Edit" dialog.
    • It didn't work for me either. My password and username are correct as they work fine with OE and the web version. It also works on an old version of TB on another computer. I have very carefully checked the Outgoing Server (SMTP) Edit dialog with the old version and it is exactly the same.
Problem is old version works new one doesn't.

  • I can send a message, but when I try to read a message it comes up with "Sending of password did not succeed. Mail server pop.mail.yahoo.com responded: pop not allowed for use"
