I’m thinking about leaving

Thunderbird STILL having "smart" folder issues ... need HELP!

installed TB3, couldn't kill "smart" folders using all the collective advice gleaned from several days on these forums and went back to TB2 currently at 2.0.0.24

"smart" folders are STILL with us here after several MONTHS of protracted war against them... again using all the collective advice of these forums ...

we have eight email addresses here ... this stupid "innovation" has made keeping things straight with these accounts a living H * E * L * L

(Please note the name of the fiery place was flagged as objectionable for a family site )...

we need a switch / checkbox to shut this "feature" down completely.. BUT, in the mean time, a method to completely disable the mixing of our multiple accounts that WORKS would be NICE...

!@#$%^%$%^&*&^&*()(*&^%$#@!!!

Ahem, i digress ...

we have edited the advanced prefs configuration to change the smart folder type to pop3 from none ... we have edited same to remove the smart folders view entirely ... we have edited every blessed setting remotely related to this issue for each and every of the eight accounts until our fingers bled from the typing ... although everything does work and emails for each account do go into the in-boxes they are sent to ... they ALSO go into the in-box of the account on the top of the folders list... NONE of the fixes we have found here has been able to stop this behavior ...

we download all our mail using pop3 and use mozbackup to backup our profiles ... we'd LIKE to get TB3 running WITHOUT smart folders, but don't have the time (or inclination) to have to learn to rewrite the entire program...

and no, I'm not familiar with the current version of TB3 ... yet. I have 3.1.2 downloaded and will install once I get an experienced Mozilla TB specialist to respond here ... I want to come through this with ...

1) all the mail from our eight existing accounts intact
2) incoming mail going to their proper inboxes
3) NO smart folders "helpful innovation" going on at all
4) GetMail plug-in functioning
5) & that warm fuzzy Thunderbird feeling back !!!

Think you can handle it??

I await your insightful help ... I'll be happy to answer any questions pertinent to the issue as stated but PLEASE... save the pep talks about how wonderful smart folders are and how you can "just switch views" ... smart folders was a stupid idea ... you should just admit it and get on with life...

  • Yes, you DO have to "Switch views" -- ONCE -- to get rid of "Smart Folders"; "View->Folders->All".
    • uhh ... wrong? ... the behavior persists ...

there are no smart folders showing in any view and haven't been for some time...

the advanced config codes have been edited to change the type from none to pop3 and the then visible smart folders deleted ... they haven't come back either ... HOWEVER we are STILL getting duplicate copies of emails sent to other addresses appearing in the first mailbox on the list of eight ...

ummm... just like I already said above???

  • unified view isn't going to go away in the foreseeable future in version 3. and there are no provisions to remove it as far as I know. Although you can navigate away from it as Michael stated. That selection should persist across restarts.

If you see it in version 2, the solution is listed at http://kb.mozillazine.org/Go_back_to_...

  • I’m really thinking about it now
thank you wayne for the link ...

I'll assume you are refering to the following section ...

" # If you ever selected Smart Folders in 3.x you may have a pseudo Smart Folders account listed in the folder pane. This will gradually corrupt your folder listings forcing you to periodically rebuild the index. You can't get rid of it by deleting an account. If you don't have it, you don't have to do anything. Otherwise:

    1. Exit Thunderbird and back up prefs.js
    2. Search for smart folders in prefs.js and find what server id it uses. In this example its using server4 due to user_pref("mail.server.server4.name", "Smart Folders");
    3. Find its account id. In this example its account4 due to user_pref("mail.account.account4.server", "server4");
    4. Find mail.accountmanager.accounts and remove that account from it. For example, change user_pref("mail.accountmanager.accounts", "account1,account2,account4"); to user_pref("mail.accountmanager.accounts", "account1,account2");
    5. Delete all of the settings for the smart folder's server and for the setting that assigns the server to an account. Otherwise Thunderbird will add the smart folders account back. In this example, you'd delete all of the mail.server.server4 settings and user_pref("mail.account.account4.server", "server4");.

    # You're done. If you decide to upgrade to 3.x later on make certain you backup your profile first in case you change your mind "

Pretty exact description of what we did, actually, although step 5 is a little vague...

Yes, incoming emails to our various addresses do go to their proper inboxes, but additional copies of these emails also appear in the inbox of the first account on our list

I'm referring to the "All Folders" sidebar view ... the expandable tree on the left side of the Thunderbird screen where you see ...

    accountA@mozilla.mail
    accountB@mozilla.mail
    accountC@mozilla.mail
    accountD@mozilla.mail
    accountE@mozilla.mail
    accountF@mozilla.mail
    accountG@mozilla.mail
    accountH@mozilla.mail
    local folders

Example ... incoming mails for accounts A, B, C, & F arrive, each goes into it's own inbox BUT, duplicate copies of the incoming mails for accounts B, C & F ALSO appear in the account A folder... No smart folders visible ... and I wouldn't mind finding out how to hide that local folders entry as well ...

Sorry , I'm not going to post a screen shot showing all our emails on a public forum, so you'll just have to bear with me here...

And thanks Mozilla, for marking this question as answered when it's NOT ... I'll tell you when you've given us a solution to your stupid feature that works!!

  • It was not mozilla that marked it answered, that was me, a volunteer. And I DID make the question unanswered after my last posting, so if you are still seeing it marked answered it's due to getsatisfaction being goofy. And the status is irrelevant as long as we have a useful conversation going here, so I don't know why you bring it up.P

Please, it's important that we stay reasonable and civil with each other and other volunteers. Please see the links to information about how the support operations at the right side of http://getsatisfaction.com/mozilla_me...

Back to the actual problem ... I posted the link because your description made it sound like your problems were in *version 2*, after having been on version 3. Note, the section I pointed to is EXPLICITLY about "From 3.x to 2.0.0.24".

I don't understand your issue and I haven't seen any bugs on it [1], so I probably wont have any information for you after this posting. However,
    1. if you edited prefs.js then it might be advisable to start over with a new profile
    2. check the error console for anything that may be relevant

  • I’m maybe starting to come around
don't take it personally Wayne, I thought the Mozilla / GetS team had intervened ...and then for some reason, my reply wouldn't post ... certainly looked like we were being prevented from posting because the topic had been closed ... Hence my snarling...

IMRO TB smart folders is definitely one of the dumbest innovations ever, but hey, that's just me... so like you say ... back to the question at hand...

your link was on target and to the point ... yes we have TB2 here at the moment ...
the reason I said step 5 was a little vague is this ...

if you look at all the lines of code under the Advanced Config Editor, it's not exactly child's play to determine which lines are harboring the offending smart folders functions. Ours had ten accounts to choose from ...our 8 addresses, the local folders one and the "smart" folders one. Each of these is helpfully labeled with an id#, but there are a LOT of lines for each of those ten...and multiple sections that look to be involved ...

In the absence of an exacting step-by-step guide to specifically which lines to delete or alter, even very experienced hands can falter...

We just went through the entire Advanced Config list and found two entries that looked suspiciously like smart folder leftovers, so we have backed up the profile, edited those two puppies oughta there and backed up again ... ( MozBackUp is a wonderful thing!) ...

I just sent some test emails to see if the behavior as described has finally left and gone away... of course, it will take a couple of days to verify that nothing else is broke as a result of all this meddling under the hood... We are hopeful that the smart folder torment is finally at an end

    BUT...

now comes the fun part ... we want to migrate to TB3 ... in fact I've downloaded the latest version and will attempt an install soon... but all the joy we've had trying to escape from smart folders after reverting to TB2 has made us VERY leary of TB3

Are you saying that there is no way to turn this "feature" off in TB3??

I understand the "All Folders" view stuff, but I want to make sure that if we install TB3 we're not going to be going right back to sorting incoming mail by hand again.

Surely there an Advance Config code hack to completely remove the smart folders specifically for TB3 ??

and if there isn't, then surely this is the very place to discuss it... I for one, sure won't feel that the issue has been fully addressed without one...

  • Your items in order:
    1. correct, as previously stated. The unified folders are in fact special virtual folder that are built at startup
    2. no guarantee, but you don't have to use unified folder view, and never did
    3. again, no
    4. I haven't seen anyone request what you are asking in the 1+ years that smart folders (now unified folders) has been in development and production. You can always ask, but I can't think of a single developer who would put time into such a request, given that the view is entirely optional as delivered in the product.

I don't see why you feel that you will be compelled to use it. It's like any other view in the folder pane (unread, favorites, recent) which can be cycled through using the arrows at the top of the folder pane, and as you see it in version 2 - you pick what you want to see.

  • I’m not convinced by a long shot
The reasons I feel that we will be compelled to use smart folders are simple...

    A) we installed TB3, had it start mixing up our 8 addresses inboxes , couldn't get it to stop

    B) fled back to TB2 ... couldn't get it to stop ...

    C) tried like the devil to find some workaround to get back to the perfectly fine smart-folder-less way we were getting on before the TB3 install... couldn't get it to stop ...

    D) just went through more editing per your link to make sure we hadn't missed anything ... test emails now in ... hasn't stopped yet...

Wayne, I appreciate that you are trying to help... but you are focusing on VIEWS again,... we are way past that ... Simply put, something apparently got written to our drive by the original TB3 install that deleting the entire profile and program and reverting to TB2 didn't ( couldn't?) get rid of

We are NOT experiencing a issue with views settings ... we are experiencing a malfunction that is placing duplicate copies of incoming emails in the WRONG inboxes... regardless of how Folder View is set

    we want this behavior stopped...

    the only question is HOW?

    Further torment ...

We just removed the entire profile and program again restarted and installed TB3 ... on the outside chance that what we have been dealing with might be a undocumented issue with the earliest version of TB3, since corrected...

at least that sure seems to be the most likely explanation at this point since everyone INSISTS on talking about the "All Folders" view as the answer...

We got that part ... doesn't help, OK??

Hummm, all 8 addresses reappeared all by themselves, complete with all the emails we just removed from the drive ... Gee, we didn't have to put them back... TB3 did it for us ... Humm, I wonder where those emails were hiding ... betcha that is part of this puzzle too...

Test mailing will have to wait til Monday... talk to you then...

  • I’m still not done here
    yeah, they were, Michael...

After much digging, we unearthed a couple of instances of the profile ... and the original problem HOPEFULLY is now fixed ... But we still have issues

    here's the current situation ...

used Mozbackup to backup the profile etc. made a separate Mozbackup of just the emails and a manual copy just to be safe ... then deleted TB2 and every Thunderbird directory we could find on the drive ... ran our cleaner utils to expunge any hangers-on and restarted

    Then ...

installed the latest ver. of TB3 and imported NOTHING... recreated our accounts and ran a few test mails ... looks good... and guess what? ... no "smart folders in ANY view ... deeeeeelightful...

But ... I still have to restore the existing mail without losing these hard won gains and that tabbed email interface will take some getting used to, believe me ...

so far no more mixing of incoming mail ... but do NOT mark this as answered just yet... I'll let you know when we're finished ... and that ain't gonna happen til my mail is all back in place and we haven't seen any inbox mixing on ANY of our tests...

Then maybe I'll tell you how to get rid of the smart folders altogether ...

  • I’m beginning to get REALLY frustrated
Addendum ... the accursed behavior is still with us... We have, however, made progress... not all our testing is complete, but the problem seems to now be isolated to two of the addresses of our 8 ...

for some as yet unexplained reason, Thunderbird has decided to associate incoming mails from one of our personal addresses to both that account AND to the default account ... ie the one that was first created ...

To further annoy the snot out of us, the !@#$%^ program has the temerity to mark this unwanted COPY of the incoming mail as addressed to "YOU" ... mouse-over on this "YOU" reveals the personal address that the mail is supposed to be going to, so it's getting that part right, ... but ....

why oh why is an EXTRA copy appearing in an inbox that has nothing whatsoever to do with the address it was sent to ?

The only reasonable cause we can think of is that Thunderbird has another profile, config or ini file backup hidden somewhere that we didn't find and get rid of when we expunged all old versions and everything that sailed with them yesterday ...

Certainly, the program must be getting this REALLY unwanted association from somewhere ... I want to know where so I can kill it dead...

Incidentally ... does it SOUND like this question is answered ??????????????????

  • I’m beyond commenting civilly
here's a pic illustrating the offending address ... this is certainly at the root of what we have been experiencing ... HOW is TB getting the idea that this address should be "YOU" ... there are 7 people using our system, each with their own address and inbox and one address & inbox that does general duty ...

How is one person's inbox suddenly associated with the general in box ... and more importantly, regardless of how this happened in the first place, how in blazes is TB managing to retain this information after we deleted program, profiles, settings etc.

Is it going to take a registry hack to get rid of this??
    • I don't think the "You" has anything to do with your problem; it's controlled by the "mail.showCondensedAddresses" setting:

      mail . showCondensedAddresses Boolean
      • True (default): Show just the display name for people in the address book

      • False: Show both the email address and display name.

I'm sorry I can't make any suggestions regarding the duplicated emails, because I don't know how that could occur.

  • I’m not as mad as I was yesterday, but i'm still MAD
Michael, this is part of the puzzle and I thank you for the tip on when the "YOU" is coming from ... I'll look into that shortly

BTW, while searching for work-arounds we did find a couple of plugins that, while not solving our immediate issues, do seem useful enough for keeping multiple email addresses organized...

Folderpane lets you arrange your account folders display in whatever order you like ... https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thun...

Account Colors allows assigning a different screen color to each of your accounts... https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thun...

As to the duplicating problem... I have that isolated to one address now ... at least it looks like it so far ... we are working on the possibility that the TB3 program somehow picked up an association of my name and hence my personal address with our general address via incoming mails from our Facebook fan page ... it's convoluted but we are working by process of elimination here and TB3 sure got that association from someplace... EVERY account setting has been checked several times and everything is as it should be ... no cross references or multiple identities, etc.

Still not clear on how TB3 re-established the association between my name, the default account & this stupid "YOU" designation ... right up there with "MY DOCUMENTS" & "MY MUSIC" IMRO ... after we cleaned house ... but I'll find out ...

How about this, Forum Folk... Anyone have any ideas on where TB3 pick up such information on it's own and / or how it might be retaining account info / prefs / config settings on a system even though it was completely uninstalled??? and esp. how to edit such data??

Damn thing still knew all my preferences at reinstall even after all that deleting...

  • Same "X-UIDL:" values ? I thought you said it was delivering them to two different folders (In fact, you did say that...."an EXTRA copy"...).

You have, I would suspect, totally jumbled your prefs.js while trying to get rid of "smart folders".

My advice would be to take your original TB2 profile backup (if you've still got one) and replace your current attempt. If you don't have the original, then take your TB3.1.x profile, install 3.1.x, and switch views to "All Folders". Mail can be migrated to the new profile folder using these instructions:

THANK YOU to whomever took the ANSWERED designation away... !!!

Didn't realize that that link I posted today actually addresses a somewhat different issue ... forget that approach... it's not the answer here anyway...

Micheal, we already did pretty much what you just suggested ... went back to square one with the oldest version of TB2 we had ... 2.0.0.6 ... then brought the program up to the latest version of TB2... 2.0.0.24 ... then restored the original profile backup, then tested for the anomalous behavior...

sure enough, the same two addresses still have some unholy association... Yes an extra copy of each email sent to that one address out of the whole list of addresses also appears in the default account's folder ... without fail ... every time ...

The suggested fixes for "From 3.x to 2.0.0.24" don't seem to have any effect...

Likewise, our tests on fresh installs of both TB2.0.0.24 and TB3.1.2 ... with deleting all profile info to force TB to rebuild of the prefs.js file and without importing any profile backups... STILL exhibit the very same maddening association between these two accounts...

We also took a few extra steps to assure that TB was not allowed to retain any hidden info from previous installs...

The upshot is that these tests indicate that TB, regardless of the version we checked, is getting this association between these two accounts from the incoming end of the equation ...

We are in the process of eliminating places that this info can be hiding / coming from & THOROUGHLY going over all e mail account settings on the server end

So, after all this thrashing about in the dark without a light, it looks like Google may be the culprit... we are looking at this right now ... I'll have more in a few hours ... I've been methodically testing all evening and I'm tired ... it's almost 1:30 AM here

Just DON'T mark this as solved until we have a verified culprit in cuffs...

Your tip about getting rid of the "YOU" annoyance works beautifully, BTW...

  • If you're not having to completely re-enter the account information (i.e., set up the accounts "from scratch"), then you're not deleting the profile (make sure you've got it backed up before you do, though) -- and that's why you're still seeing bits & pieces left over. You'll know when you've done this correctly because it will start up asking you to configure an account (at least, that's what it does on TB3, and I assume TB2 does the same).

At that point, the best thing to do would be to enter the account information for your 8 accounts, configuring them as desired, then just move your emails from the backed-up profile to the appropriate account directories in the new profile (using the "Transferring data" article). I wouldn't transfer anything BUT your email, and maybe your 'popstate.dat' files (if you're using POP accounts and still have a lot of email on the servers). The remaining files -- especially preferences -- should be left out, because you can always set those via the GUI or Config Editor. Here's an article that tells what's what:
    http://kb.mozillazine.org/Files_and_f...

The order in which you define the accounts may be significant, in that TB writes an "X-Account-Key:" header in the received emails; if possible, you'll want that account information in the emails to "match up" with the account number for the account (as in 'mail.accountmanager.accounts'), although it may only be relevant for replies/forwards, if it's even used at all (the field may no longer have significance, except for tracking purposes, but I truly do not know).

  • I’m not convinced just yet, but trying to understand
Okay, we now have the perp in custody...

Google, in their infinite wisdom, had the offending address set to FORWARD a copy of every arriving email to the other address... Trouble is, none of us remembers giving them permission to do this... ??? ... we are investigating ...

Anyway, changed that Google setting back to what our records show it was when we set things up there and ...bingo! ...the problem of duplicate copies of emails in the other address's inbox appears to be gone ... We will be on watch for any anomalies, but preliminary testing says the major battle is over ...

However, before we reach for the champagne, there are ARE a couple of attendant issues...

First one is ... we are having a bit of a problem getting back the mail received since the last full profile backup 3 days ago ... it's not much, maybe 30 messages, nor is it very important stuff, but one likes to be thorough...

We rebuilt all the profile & account settings from scratch on a clean install ... we carefully checked that each account's "X account key" number matched up properly with the proper account number per your recommendation above ... we restored the email from the last full profile backup ... & all the mail up to that point is back in place... Everything that we've fooled around with so far works just fine, all our address books and settings all look good

Trouble is that when we try to add our incremental backup of that 3 days worth of mail, that's all that is present when we check ... just those three days ... all the older stuff disappears ... and when we bring the older stuff back, the three days worth is gone again ... looks like the latest restore is overwriting all previous attempts each time...

We are now in the process of muddling our way through the tips included in the "Transferring Data To A New Profile" & "Profile Manager" sections of the Zine in search of a solution...

If you know of a plug-in or extension that can help us extract the individual messages from our incremental backup and restore them to the TB profile without disturbing the mail already restored, now's the time to talk about it...

The second issue ... Probably isn't an issue at all, but rather stems from our unfamiliarity with TB3 .. . Attempting to understand the possible uses of the Folder Views other than the obvious ALL FOLDERS choice, we started playing with the UNREAD FOLDERS view... A quick way to view ONLY the unread mail might be considered a smart idea...

Problem is, while the Unread Folders does show which accounts have unread messages in them and how many, it appears to be otherwise useless ...

When we open one of the accounts showing under the Unread Folders view, we see ALL the mail, not JUST the unread messages, as one might reasonably expect...

In fact, opening any giving account gives us all the mail, regardless of which of the various Folder Views we have up,

So, is this the normal behavior ? .. do we have to turn on some setting to allow the "smart" folders to do their thing? ... do we have to set up filters to MAKE the smart folder get smart? ... or are we just missing something ?

Hey, since everyone here seems to be so fond of Smart ( uhh, Unified ) Folders, they've gotta be more than just this...

So before we mark this case as closed, a little more discourse...

    Addendum ... Attendant issue 1

Just so you know, we just discovered that our friends at Google ALSO changed the POP settings on ALL our Gmail accounts to keep copies of our mail on their servers... Our records show that on every one of these accounts, we specified that, once downloaded, all messages were to be deleted from the Gmail servers...

Hummm. this appears to be something that all our fellow Gmail users just MIGHT want to check on ...

Anyway, while this as-yet-unexplained setting change (Thanks, Google!) makes the restoration of OUR three days worth of missing messages pretty easy, others might not be so lucky... I think we should discuss alternative solutions herein...

Some people swear by ImportExport Tools. Never used it myself, and it'll depend on whether you can get the files out of your "incremental" backup in a format that the extension can use (i.e., the original "mbox" format). It should allow you to "extract" individual emails from the "mbox" file, which you can then "import" into your current profile.

AFAIK, yes. It's just a more convenient way (for some) to organize their data. I, personally, use the "All Folders" view, but I don't have 30+ accounts, either.

  • I’m less than thrilled..."Smart", huh?
    Thanks Michael...

As to Attendant issue 1 ... we will look into the ImportExport Tools (and a few others that we found ) & report back in a couple of days...

As to Attendant Issue 2 ... well, if that's all "smart" folders can really do, I can see WHY the developers changed the name to "unified" ....

I'll stand by my designation of "dumb" ... Unless some bright-eyed developer has come up with a TB plug-in that will allow the UNREAD folder view to display ONLY unread messages, etc. ...

Certainly sounds like something worthy of further attention here...

  • Yeah, I don't use 'em either. But there are people that swear by them, and I can see how having all your "Inboxes" at the top of the folder view could be handy if you've got -- as some people do -- 10's of accounts (the "30+" I mentioned was not an exaggeration).

What'll be REALLY nice is when you can "shuffle" them to arrange them the way you want to see them; that'd be the "View->Folders->MyWay" view... ;-)

  • I’m LMFAO
I think that's what the FolderPane extension does ...

"Folderpane lets you arrange your account folders display in whatever order you like ... https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thun...

Account Colors allows assigning a different screen color to each of your accounts... https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thun... "

I haven't tried these yet as I'm still straightening out the mess on the Google end of the show ... turns out that nobody over there seems to be able to explain how to retrieve an archived gmail message... Go figure that!

The others over here have just begin digging through the Thunderbird plug-in / extension library to see what other fixes might be waiting to help ...

in addition to FOLDERPANE and the aforementioned ACCOUNT COLORS They found...

    DISABLE "YOU" ... https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thun...
"Addresses in the From/To/Cc headings are since Thunderbird 3 replaced with word "You" if they match any of your identities. This extension disables this function" ...
AMEN ...sounds like your code hack to me.

    FOLDER ACCOUNT ...https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thun...
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thun...
"Lets you associate user accounts and identities with specific folders. Great for multiple users who share TB, or for managing mailing lists" ...

    MANUALLY SORT FOLDERS ... https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thun...
pretty much the same functions as FolderPane?

    aaaaannnnndddd .... check out THIS ... !!!!!!!!

    http://email.about.com/od/mozillathun....

tried it, a little ill behaved and might need a bit of polishing, but it DOES work ...

We are going to start a request thread for this to be fully integrated into the next full release ...

There's more, but you only get to see them if this thread doesn't get marked as solved

  • I also have this issue due to multiple e-mail accounts. I want to disable smart folders and can not determine how to do it. Smart folders makes managing our e-mail a nightmare.

  • I’m glad to see this is helping someone else too
read all the stuff above ... chances are you will find some answers here ... our issues were traced to Google changing some settings... but there's plenty of other issues relating to "smart" folders discussed in detail...

    Hope it helps ...

  • I’m ecstatic to avoid this pain in the butt
Wow I am really happy that you published this thread. I was considering TB but now I will avoid it like the plague.

I should have known better anyway, Firefox is well down the path of "We know what's neat and cool so we are just going to do it despite your wishes". For example we were using FF with some security cams, and during an incident I tried to quickly access a cam and instead got FF's update, which consists of hijacking the display and showing happy messages and advertisements about Mozilla. Meanwhile some unknown person is trying to enter the back door.

But I digress. But actually I don't. Apparently, the same folks who brought you the Intrusive Update Which Should Be Happening In The Background have taken their talents to email. Count me out.
