I’m confused

What happened to the unified inbox? - Answer: Nothing, it's still around

Where's the unified inbox from older versions of Thunderbird? This was a useful feature.

  • Craig, It your are using IMAP you will not have the option of a unified inbox.

For POP accounts, simply go to Tools | Account Settings and select the common inbox for your accounts.

Weird, b/c in last version of TBird before beta, I had the exact same settings for my mailboxes and had the option of a unified mailbox.

  • Is it IMAP you're using? TB3 has Smart Folders, which I understand earlier versions of TB didn't have, which mimics having a single inbox for all e-mail accounts whether accessed using IMAP or POP. However, I think it's only ever been possible to use the actual global inbox for POP mail - I think that is still the case?

  • I’m mad. I can't believe you would get rid of a simple unified inbox!! I want my old system back. what do I need to do to get it back. how dare they present us with a new option and not tell us they would take away such an important thing?!?
I must have my unified inbox back! What must I do?

I’m glad nothing happened to the unified inbox (although the UI isn't ideal)

Claudia and friends, I believe there is an easy solution to your question.

TB has 2 concepts of creating "unified" inboxes etc.:

    A) the old way: for POP accounts only, you can force multiple POP accounts to download into the same physical inbox in the "Local Folders" (or any other POP account's inbox), with this setting:
Tools > Account Settings > Your Account > Server Settings > Advanced
There you have the following choices (pick 2nd or 3rd for global inbox):
    ( ) Inbox for this server's account
    (o) Global inbox (Local Folders Account)
( ) Inbox for different account: [account picker]
Actually, I think the UI is poorly labelled around here, as this will physically share the other account folders (Drafts, Sent, etc.) as well.

    B) the new way (recommended): for both POP and IMAP email accounts, without any special setup, you can choose to display them as virtually "Unified Folders" (which will have the effect of a global Inbox etc. that combines msgs from all your accounts' inboxes in one virtual folder which you can e.g. filter using new quick filter bar of TB 3.1):
From TB's main application tab (the first tab, or probably any tab with a folder pane for that sake), right below the tab heading, you'll find a small bar with another heading in normal print, which can have one of the following modes (in this order):
All folders | Unread folders | Favorite folders | Recent folders | Unified folders
For having "Unified folders", you have to click on one of the two triangular arrows next to that heading < > (red circle on the attached screenshot) repeatedly until you get into the desired mode.

The truly unified Inbox will be the very top one (green circle on the screenshot below), right below that you still find separate inboxes for each account. That top instance of the unified inbox will include inbox messages from all your email accounts (green circle). Note however, that the unified inbox will NOT show any subfolders that you created manually (applies to POP accounts only, I think), for reasons that escape me these are only accessible at the bottom (blue circle in the screenshot). Messages of such physical inbox subfolders will NOT be included in the unified inbox. We have a bug for that, but it's still being discussed and technically difficult iirc. Below the unified inbox, you'll find unified Draft's, Sent, Archive etc. folders. There's another flaw about an extra draft folder from Local folders, which looks a bit weird. Anything that isn't shown in the unified folders will be shown below (red line in the screenshot), like news accounts etc.

Please let us know if this answers your question (and send a smile if it does :))

  • About B), the new way...
I hasten to add that you can also pick the unified etc. display flavors for your email folders from this menu:
    View > Folders > Unified | All | Unread | Favorite | Recent

  • Please answer. Today is 14 Sept 2010
I'm trying to make INBOX appear when Thunderbird opens.
Instead an individual message is appearing.
How do I make Inbox pop up first.... and remain as the main page

  • My screen doesn't look like that.[above] I wish it did.
I'd use the grab feature and show you what my screen looks like but I don't think this can take attachments
