why do some of my emails duplicate in the unfied INBOX folder?

It started happening yesterday - my unified folder started showing some emails in duplicate despite a single copy having arrived into my account. Then I noticed something odd: some emails sent to one of my accounts where actually appearing as duplicates in the Inbox of another. There is NO WAY that this is a matter of the email being sent to me twice (i can replicate the behaviour: sending an email from my account 'z' to the problem account 'x' will make tbird show that email in problem account 'x' and also another account 'y'. Sending another email from my account 'w' to the problem 'account x' will make tbird show that email in problem account 'x' and also another account 'v'. Because of this dual show (which in the second, account still records x' as adresee) the email repeats in the unified folder. If you try deleting one of them in the unified INBOX folder, it will only delete a single copy form one of the two accounts...HELP!
