Will Thunderbird work on Surface tablet Win 8 RT or Win 8 Pro?

Will I be able to load Thunderbird on either of the Microsoft Surface tablets Windows 8 RT or Windows 8 Pro?

  • Thunderbird WILL run on the Surface Pro since it has the full Windows 8.

Mozilla would like to create a version of Firefox for Windows RT, but Microsoft doesn't allow other software to use the APIs needed to support it.

  • Actually, I just tried it and it won't. The NEW surface that's not out yet and is said to retail at about $900 will run programs, but the first version that is out now only runs apps that can be purchased through the Windows app store. Hopefully Thunderbird will come up with an app soon!

What I'm really waiting and hoping for is a web-based Thunderbird, where I have all of the features Thunderbird offers, but can use pop mail from all of my work accounts in the cloud, like I do on my hard drive now. Please let me know if you hear about anything like that in development.

    Thanks!

  • It is unlikely that there will ever be an app for Thunderbird for windows RT.

The main problems being that RT is crippled by Microsoft so it will run on phones. It will never be more than a glorified windows phone 8, and will be a major disappointment to almost all who buy it thinking Windows is Windows.

To quote Microsoft "Windows RT is an exciting new version of Microsoft Windows that is built to run on ARM-based tablets and PCs. Works exclusively with apps available in the Windows Store." That means that desktop applications don't run on Windows RT.

    BTW

It could be summed up as
"When is Windows not Windows?" Answer: When it is RT
