Navfree needs connection

Last weekend I went abroad with the car. When entering a new address a box appeared with "no connection to server".
The new destination address was not found (city of 2 million inhabitants).
I thought Navfree is an offline navigation...?
Furthermore, failed to navigate at high speeds (over 180km/h).

Apologies - initial versions of Navfree require a data connection to run address searching due to some aspect of the OSM map data that causes a major problem with our address routines.

The devs are fully aware of this and concluded that there was no other method of implementing an effective address search than to make it run offboard.
Secondary versions of Navfree have this limitation removed. - I have no idea how or why this is necessary.

At speed...
GPS is an inaccurate technology. Only by taking several updates from the GPS and extrapolating a position can it actually generate an accurate location.
When stationary you will notice the GPS position skipping around due to this mathematical process.
When travelling at high speed the position updates are located too far from each other for the mathematics to work effectively and positioning become inaccurate.
High speed precision is detrimental to low speed presicion and vice versa - we believe lower speed accuracy is more important.

Why would you need to navigate at this speed anyway?
Surely you should know where you're going to be travelling that fast - and how would you perform a manouvere :D

I've tried the Navfree (non-US) and the Narfree-US versions. The US version can search for an address w/o an Internet connection, but the non-US version can't. How does this make sense?

To be specific, I used the Benlux maps for Europe (Belgim, Luxenburg, Netherlands) & found myself stuck. I had an address & I had a working GPS. I could point to place on a map & navigate there, but I coule not even search for a major airport or address because I had no WiFi.

Thanks for the reply.
Can you tell me how much data are transferred? The roaming charges are unfortunately very high. :-((

The problem with high speed is that the position was no longer displayed. The display of the speed shows 0.
Even after the car stand still, no position has disappeared. I had to switch the iPhone off and on again to see my position.

That's a very interesting observation... I wonder if it's possible the positioning routines fall over if the speed is too fast.
We'll have to repeat this experiment :D

Data consumption should be negligable.
It's a pure text fetch, and it can surely not consume more than a few kilobytes.

A fair question - I do not have any information on live search data consumption and no immidiate means of quantifying it.

Problems like this are usually intermittant, please keep trying.
We're not aware of any server issues presently but do let us know if the problem persists

When will the need data connection be removed from navfree?
Without this it is unussable as standalone navigation system, point.

I'd disagree - its perfectly "usable" without a data connection you just need to have the foresight to store your destinations as favourites prior to departure.

It's only awkward for the unprepared

I'm sitting at home, with a good data connection, with plenty of 'foresight', trying to prepare for a trip. Navfree still says needs data connection. How do I get it to wake up and recognise my connection?

GPS doesn't work on iPod Touch 4. Offline gps stops working after 5 miles from my home.

That would most likely be because the iPod is not equipped with a GPS chip.

To use turn-by-turn navigation on an iPod you need an external GPS kit such as the TomTom in-car iPhone holder

I ran into this issue as well. Just out of curiosity I tried to enter an address with Wifi, 3G and mobile data switched OFF. Route guidance could not be started.

What does it need the connection for when everything is already there on my iPhone?

It's only in versions of Navfree that internet access is required for address searching... The map data is not well organised and for some reason it is giving the devs most tremendous difficulty in making on-board address searching effective.
The problem is so severe that we chose to allow internet access being a requirement over a search that wouldn't work effectively at all.
I'm not so well informed on the finer points of eactly why this is.

But UK versions should work ok without a connection and route guidance should always be possible if the destination is selected on the map.

I have Version 1.9.4 build 6996 on Android

I can search for addresses in the UK without a data connection but not in Spain or Portugal? Is there a reason for this and can I resolve it?

If not could you let me know if/when offline address searching will be available in other countries and also whether other countries are going to be getting postcode search too?

Thanks very much

This is part of the solution we are working on - UK is our home region.
We're working to make adress search in all versions of Navfree onboard again but at present UK is the only one

Where can I download a navfree version that does not need a data connection?
The version on market from 12-12-2011 does need data connection so its unusable.

Can't presently - we're working on it - we know its almost useless without offline search but it was the very best we could achieve in the time.
It should not be too long now until we can resolve the issue permanently - no more data connection requirements

Doubtful
I would need the developers to answer that question as it is more of a question of when will we have time to fully concentrate on it

Hi Peter, Moley, Kelly

Apologies, we're not on the ball with GetSatisfaction. We do always recommend emailing support@navmii.com with functionality issues such as this.

Ok... We are aware of issues affecting the address search feature - The reasons can be numerous.
First off - Apple or Android devices?

Secondly - There is a Google search feature within the app. Does that search feature function as intended?

Some Android devices are exhibiting issues with internet connectivity - If your Google search doesn't work either but otherwise the device seems to be fine with internet access then It's quite likely you are suffering this bug. Re-installing the app may help but otherwise we must wait for an update to see if we've managed to resolve those cases.

If the Google feature does work ok then chances are this is either an intermittant issue affecting the offboard search server or there has been some kind of modification made to the search server - We don't administer those servers and they seem fond of changing things without notice.

I personally would recommend using the Google feature as the preferred means of destination searching. Its efficacy is far greater than the street address search functions

Thank you so much. Using Google-search solves the problem. It even made the voice-directions work as a bi-effect!!!

Hello there,

House number searching is supported by the app but it can only work in areas where house number information is available in the map data.
Navfree uses OpenStreetMap.org as the source for its map data - OSM does have some coverage of house numbers but it is very thin on the ground, only a few certain particularly well mapped areas will work.

We can expect this to improve dramatically over time as OSM develops

Often the Google search feature will serve you better for finding specific addresses

Hope this helps
Apologies for the lack of efficacy in this function

I've only been using this app for a couple of days and I notice it has used over 20Mb of my data. As I've a limited amount on my contract is there any way to stop it using data? I thought as the maps are on the device (Samsung S4) I could search while on WIFI and it wouldn't need a connection when driving.

Any suggestions?
