Backitup 18 fills my NAS with duplicates

When I checked my NAS I found it full of duplicates on the Backup folder. Furthermore I discovered that the new file folders I have been creating since I formed the backup had not been included in the backup folder. I am now removing the whole backup (takes a looong time).

I paid a lot of money mostly for getting a functional back up program, but I guess the money I paid are thrown into the lake :-(

  • Hello Nils-

What type of backup did you create- Copy, Sync, etc.? Do you have it scheduled to run periodically? If so, how often?

  • Hello!

    Thank for your interest.

    It was Copy Folders:
"This is the most common backup type: Simply copy your media and documents onto an external drive or disk. Your copy will be fully usable. Nero BackitUp can keep your copy up-to-date continously, so you never have to remember creating a backup anymore."

Yes, it is scheduled to run every day in order to catch the new files I saved in a sub folder or if I changed a specific file.

It looks as if Nero cannot make the job!

    I have Win 10 Home, 64-bit.

  • Are the "new file folders" sub-folders in the original Copy backup definition?

  • Yes, they are.
Of course I expect the automatic back up to include new subfolders as well as new files.

  • Don't know what's going on.

I just created a continuous Copy type backup and ran it. I then added subfolders, with subfolders, to the base folder. It backed them up immediately. I also added files to one of the subfolders and it backed them up. I then deleted those files from the subfolder. I then restored the backup to the original location and all the files were restored. Note that I don't have a NAS so, the backup destination was a separate partition. I also don't know if your NAS is running in some type of RAID configuration which could affect the results.

From the looks of it, I don't think it's doing a differential backup.

In this case, I had subfolders 3 deep from the base folder. In the past, there have been some problems in Nero, in general, not just BackItUp. when there were multiple sub folders with subfolders many times deep.

I also don't know how you know that you have multiple copies of the same files since one would have to do a restore to see them.

You can ask tech support about it by going here-

    http://www.nero.com/enu/support/conta...

    and submitting the contact form.

If you do, please let me know what they have to say.

Note that they don't work weekends so you would here from them until at least Monday.

  • Thank your for your interest.

What I want is a backup program that every day monitor when I create new files or new subfolders in the folders i have chosen from the start and save them in some way. The program should alert me to run a new total backup every month or so to have two setups with data. Next month the new backup shall replace the oldest backup copy. This is a normal procedure and could not be a problem for a big company like Nero.

I will however try the support and report back here on the forum.

  • Hi Nils-

    Did tech support help you?

Seems to me all you need is to have a daily backup and monthly backup. I don't know how you could set up a daily backup which would tell you a month later that you need to create a new backup.

    • Wither 1,

Above, you said. "From the looks of it, I don't think it's doing a differential backup.". Now, you say, "There is no "differential" type backup in any version of BackItUp after v12." Thanks for that! It's much easier to spot the inconsistencies when they're on a single page.

Then, you say, "The only thing I'm not sure of is which type of backup in V2018 is an incremental. I'm sure it isn't a "sync" type.". Trust me when I say, you must be sure of a great deal that has absolutely no basis in reality.

If you want to actually help users with backup questions, perhaps you could contact those high-level friends of yours at Nero and get them to publish an up-to-date manual and have someone that actually knows how the current BackItUp program is supposed to behave participate in these BackItUp topics, allowing you to simply "go paint".
    • My mistake. I should have said "incremental" in the first instance.

Not painting for a little while. I finally replaced the carburetor on my power washer so I'm doing power washing today and probably tomorrow. I've got about 4 to 5 hours worth left.
