Inseting a clip into a finished project

I have completed a project but realised that I have omitted to include a particular video clip. The project was made using advanced method and a number of tracks are involved. How can I insert a new video clip along the timeline but still keeping all the following videeos and effects in the right places?

  • Hi Martin,
I think if you hold down the "SHIFT" key, then Click and drag from the start of the clip position you want to move all the tracks along from, all the tracks will move together from that point.

So you can make space for the video clip you want to insert.

But I'm not experienced with advanced editing.

If I'm wrong ... DON'T save the project, or else use the "UNDO" button to reverse anything that messes up ...

Perhaps one of the Video "gurus" - such as Omega Tester or Wither will pop in later with good advice.

  • If he wants to add the video clip in front of the completed project, all he has to do is click and hold on the the completed project on the timeline and drag it to the right enough to accomodate the duration of the new clip. After inserting the new clip, he can just drag the original project back to the end of the new clip. In lieu of dragging the original project back to the end of the new clip, he could right click on the gap and select "remove from track and close gap".

    • Lucky Phil- I am so thankful that you responded because I omitted something. To move the entire project on a single video track to the right, he should first click on the little arrow in the bottom left corner of the rectangular box on the right hand side of the timeline and select the arrow which points to the right. Then he should click on the first video. That will select everything to the right. Then he should click on the selection tool (white arrow on the right hand side of the timeline) and then do the drag and drop. My sincere apologies. :(

Something else I didn't address is the case where effects or other video might be placed on Video track 2 or another video track. What I find in this case is that you have to first select everything on the lowest track using the arrow. Then, shift-click on each item in the content of the highest video track first and then shift-click on the first content of the video track below. Then everything can be dragged and dropped together. I've never been through that exercise before and really don't like it.

Of course, one could drag and drop everything on each video track separately from another. I think that's far easier then the convoluted procedure I just described. As always with Nero, there's more than one way to skin a cat.

Someone else might have a better way.
    • Thanks, guys but I found the easiest way was to complete my project, reload it into Nero and then split the video at the point I wanted to insert the missing video. I then just had to edit the insertion I.e sound levelling with other tracks I wanted to add add and re-render the completed project again. Seemed to work OK but thanks again for the suggestions.

It seems crazy that a video editing package will not allow you to insert a clip wherever you need it on the timeline - near the front or in the middle. Surly the idea is to experiment as you edit, does this clip belong here, before this other clip or after this other clip or somewhere completely different. If it cannot do this basic job easily then it seems very limiting. Being able to position clips and being able to trim them is the absolute bare minimum of what an editing program should be able to do.
    • It's a very complicated way to do things. In Sony movie studio you click one button which gives you the option to move one track, or one track with all effects and markers, or all tracks with all markers and effects. I only started using Nero 15 again because thanks to the latest Microsoft update i can no longer use AVI file with movie studio, and because Nero 15 was on special offer.

Not putting Nero 15 down its a good basic program for burning your home DVD films with plenty of effects options but its VERY limited on how you use these effects and options or very complected.

"To move the entire project on a single video track to the right, he should first click on the little arrow in the bottom left corner of the rectangular box on the right hand side of the timeline and select the arrow which points to the right. If that's not complected i don't know what is!

  • The procedure I provided above will work to move the existing video to create a space for inserting a new video clip.

As shown in the screenshot below, display the arrow I show circled in red. Click on the first video of the series of clips you want to move. Then select the white selection tool on the right hand side. Click on the first video and drag to the right.

To trim a video, just double click on it and the trim window will come up. Trim away.

You can also use the cutting tool (scissors) to demarcate the beginning and end of the part you want to cut out. Then, right click on that part and select "Remove from track and close gap".
