Manually Download Product Updates

Hi Folks,

Where does one go on the Nero Support site to download updates to Nero product components?

For example, if I wanted download Nero 7 component updates without using Automatic Update in the product, where would I look? Tried these links for products that I own but all I'm finding is the download links for the documentation.

Nero 7: http://www.nero.com/enu/support/#n7:::

Nero 2014 PLA: http://www.nero.com/enu/support/#n201...

  • Hi hgagne-

There are no automatic updates for v7.

If you go to nero.com, downloads, Previous Product Downloads and click on Update under v7, you can purchase a download or disc of the updated product. This assumes you have the full version. Despite that, I think that if you have Essentials version, you can use the update to update your version although you will still have an Essentials version.

    Appreciate the reply; so ...

In the case of Nero 7 Ultra ... I have to purchase the updates to my legitimate product as they are no longer available on the manufacturer website for download like they used to be?

In the case of Nero 2014 PLA ... I can't manually download updates to my legitimate product as the manufacturer doesn't provide links on their website?

Assuming I understood correctly, this is most unfortunate and sets a negative industry precedence. Here's to hoping other manufacturers don't follow this strategy.

Regrettably, this will likely be my last Nero AG purchase.

  • For v9 and earlier, an update is the entire program. I'm guessing this is because they don't use a Windows Installer. If Nero didn't charge for the updates, anybody would be able to download and use the programs. Not a good strategy for making money. Of course, a free download wouldn't include the ability to work with those formats that require patent activation and those are the formats most people want to work with. Since I don't work for Nero, everything is just my opinion.

For v10-14, updates are provided by running the check for updates from the Nero Control Center.

  • Hi Wither 1,

Actually, the pre-v9 package was a self-extracting .EXE which created a folder with the installation content ... essentially a CD-like image (autorun, setup, etc.). One would run the SETUP.EXE (or autorun) to install. The SETUP would prompt for your legitimate serial number or would install in DEMO mode otherwise.

As of Nero 5, a Control Center of sorts existed where one could automatically download and install updates to the software components. Alternatively, one could go to the Nero website and download the updated package or package components.

This has been the industry norm for close to 25 years ... i.e. one is able to obtain previous version file downloads without have to purchase them. I would certainly understand if Nero AG was defunct or out-of-business but that's not the case here.

Now in my case, I do have the last versions of the Nero 7 Ultra components in my offline archive. What I am after now, is to download the updated components for Nero 2014 PLA so that I may store them offline as well.

I appreciate that Automatic Updates is convenient, but I'm interested in storing the updated components offline.

    Cheers,

  • I should mention that, up until about 8 months ago, the updates for older versions back to v7, I believe, were available as free downloads.

About the only thing you can do, in regards to v14, is to download and save the trial version and the content pack, each time a update is made. It would still have to be updated online. I have a folder full of Nero trial versions, content\creative packs, and standalone product versions.

The update disc would be the closest thing to having the latest updates but it's only up to date for the time at which you buy it.

    Appreciate the information.

IMHO, it's an unfortunate decision/direction for Nero AG to take.

As a customer, I expect to be able to obtain the same-version updates I require from the manufacturer website at no additional cost ... it's not my fault that the product released with deficiencies and I feel it's my right to obtain the files on my own at any point in time afterwards.

I stated an example in my previous post as to why I prefer not using Automatic Updates; there are several other reasons at a corporate and/or enterprise integration perspective.

Regardless; I sincerely hope someone from Nero AG is reading these forums threads/posts as at the moment, I'm afraid I'll have to start recommending a different solution to my clients.

    Cheers,

  • You should either call customer service or send an e-mail to tech support or customer service on this issue. Perhaps they have a way of doing what you want. I think that Nero has a separate way of handling corporate clients.

It also seems to me that there is a special option for obtaining updates for anyone when licenses are purchased online. I can't remember what it is called.

So, give them a call or send an e-mail. Let us know what they have to say.

  • Have been corresponding back-and-forth with Nero AG since I opened this thread ... needless to say that the responses you provided have been far more useful than those from Nero AG via email. ;)

That said, I'll post here should there be any progress.

In hindsight, I should have checked the support section of the site before purchasing 2014 PLA.

  • * UPDATE *

Made same progress with the fine folks at Nero AG. It appears that it is indeed possible to obtain manual downloads. They are hidden behind a portal (http://www.nero-mirror.com) and require direct link information ... which requires that one contact Nero AG Support. Still not ideal in the context of self-help, but at least a step in the right direction.

Ideally, legitimate customers should be able to access the downloads without assistance from support. If abuse is a concern, I'm certain legitimate customers would have no issues creating a portal account (username, password, serial, etc.) to obtain the downloads.

  • Thanks for the update.

When you buy Nero online, you can purchase the Extended Dowload Service. That is what I was alluding to earlier but couldn't remember the name.

  • Appreciate the info.

I could understand paying the fee for continued development efforts or technical support on previous versions.

    IMHO,

If other software manufacturers can provide customer account portals where customers can register their product serial numbers after which they can download the latest version of the product associated with the serial number ... so can Nero AG!

And considering the amount of dollars that I, you, and others have already spent on Nero AG products - not to mention goodwill marketing/sales on our parts - I would never purchase extended download services for something that should be free to begin with.

  • I don't buy extended anything from anybody. I just wanted you to know about that option.

For v10-v14, they provide the updated software under the standard version . When you insert your Platinum serial number, it unlocks the Platinum features. So, every time they provide an update via the ControlCenter, the updates should be available in that online update. I think that's the closest thing you can get to what you want.
