  • I’m frustrated

  • I have the same problem. I need to restore files I backed up 4 years ago. So I have downloaded and installed the same software version (Nero Backitup 12.5.7) on my new Win 10 computer. The Nero Backitup agent crashes 0-10 percent into the process.
Same thing happens when I run the software on the original computer (which has been upgraded from Win 7 to Win 10 since then). MSVCR100.DLL crashes with references to ntdll.dll.

What can I do to restore the backup?

  • David- your copy of Backitup is not up to date. If you have the Nero v11 suite, I suggest that you run the check for updates from the Nero ControlCenter.

Bezman- Backitup 12.5 .7 is also out of date but the problem is likely because it's not Win 10 compatible. You can try going here-

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Nero\Nero 12\Nero BackItUp

and finding the backitup.exe file. Right click on it and select "run as administrator."

    Does that help?

If not, Right click on it and select Properties. In the Compatibility tab, set the compatibility mode to Win 7 or earlier. Then try your restore.

  • Thanks for the speedy response.
I forgot to write that I already tried both of those, but with the same result. Tried it again, just to be sure. This is the last error in Win Event Log:

  • Thanks Wither 1.
However, program 'check for updates' states "There are no updates available at this time. You are already using the latest version of Nero BackItUp." 15.63.1.92

  • I can see in the log files that Nero creates the following info, one every 10 seconds:
21:37:50 Target path list is not available for this file: C:\Users\Lars Bencze\AppData\Roaming\Nero\Nero 12\Nero BackItUp\Files\Lars Bencze Nero LIVEBackup.nji

I have checked the .nji files, and the <TargetPathsList Default="1"> tag indeed had nothing under it (whereas the <SourcePathsList Default="1"> tag has the <Path>C:\</Path> entry in it).
When I compare to the .nji file that was created at the time of the backup, both tags have paths in them. I took the Liberty to edit the current .nji file and added "<Path>C:\</Path>" under TargetPathsLists, and the error messages stopped. Nothing else seems to be happening though... :)
I will await any further outcome of this job and get back here. But if anyone has an idea of what to change in the XML files  aka .nji files, please let me know!
    • When you upgraded to Win 10, those files were lost. Since you said that you updated from Win 7 to Win 10, you might have a folder called C:\Windows Old. It's possible that the required files are in that folder in the same path. If so, you could create the same path in the C:\Users\...................... for Win 10.

One thing you could do is to create a bootable disc using the Image Tool. When you open Backitup and select Options. The option to create the disc will be there. It will take you to a website which explains how to create the disc.

You can then boot your system using that disc to recover your files. Note that, if you have UEFI system, you will first need to go into the MBR-BIOS and disable SecurBoot before using the disc to boot.
