Nero Cover Designer not compatible with Windows 10, cannot open covers designed using Nero Cover Designer before Windows 10 installed

Will Nero ever release a version of Nero Cover Designer that is fully compatible with Windows 10? I have been designing CD covers for over 15 years, and cannot open any of these covers due to compatibility issues with Windows 10. Microsoft have advised me to roll the operating system back to Windows 7 or 8, but that will cause problems with other programs I have brought that require Windows 10. I downloaded the latest version of Nero Cover Designer, and bought 2 copies of Nero Platinum 2017, and was able to design covers again, but cannot access the several hundred files designed previously. Please help!

  • The latest version of CoverDesigner is Win 10 compatible. It's a free tool but requires a purchased copy of Nero to use LightScribe or LabelFlash.

I don't know why you bought two copies of v2017. If you did that in an effort to get CoverDesigner to work with your old templates, then you should be able to get a refund. Perhaps you'll explain.

What happens when you try to use an older template? Were any of them for an older printer you might not have or made for LightScribe or LabelFlash?

  • Greetings, thanks for responding. My Bitdefender protection program reported that this site was not safe. It now says it is safe, so I am back.

I am using Nero Cover Designer to print the CD case artwork, not to use on the CD itself. (I use a Canon program for that, as I want to alter the size of the centre circle which Nero does not allow, I also print directly to disk, not a stick-on lable).

My problem relates only to the paper inserts for CD covers. Over the last 20 years I have done recordings for several choral societies, and still get requests for my recordings. I am unable to print the covers designed in Nero before Windows 10 was loaded onto my computers, making 20 years of completed design work unable to be opened. Yes, any new work I do on designs is available, but not the older designs which are more important.

  • As to why I bought 2 copies of v2017, it is only available to use on one computer, so as I have 2 computers (1pc and a laptop) I had to buy 2 programs. Not a good marketing design - Windows products allow use on more than one computer...

  • Just for information, you can alter the center circle dimensions in CoverDesigner. Depending on what you've selected, there are two templates which already have different center hole sizes. You can also create a custom template to do this. I don't want to get into that in this thread.

You didn't say if the old files were created with a different printer than you have now. If a different paper stock was used for those files, they probably wouldn't be usuable with a newer printer. However, I would think you could open those files and then change the paper stock.

What actually happens when you try to use those files?

Which version of Nero did you use to create the older files?

  • Hi Wither, Thank you for responding so quickly. I use Canon printers, and have done so for a long time. I don't think that this is the issue here. Usually when I use windows explorer, I can see the Nero folders with the Nero Cover designer logo on them. Now, whatever computer I use, the graphic of the Nero file is blank. When I click on this icon, Nero either locks up and crashes, or Cover Designer opens with the file contents displayed on the relevant Nero tabs (ie CD booklet, CD booklet Rear, CD inlay and Disk 1). If this happens, the images I see is just pixels. It is as if the image with lots of pixels changes so that there are only a few pixels.

I did a screen shot of this, but your site does not allow me to attach a .docx format. I have counted the pixels on the CD booklet, and the resolution is approx 100 pixels wide and high. Or I get an error message saying that the files cannot be opened as they have been corrupted, or the file cannot be found within the folder. This happens with all Nero CoverDesigner files, no matter if they were created before year 2000 or after.

Today, in desperation, I contacted a company in Australia that say they are your agents, and for a $149 fee, they have remote dialled into my 2 computers to see if they can fix it. They have been able to open a few Nero files, and after working for several hours, they couldn't pin down the problem, but kept saying that the Image had been 'resized' at some stage. It is strange that this issue is identical on both computers. I certainly have not done this, and even old files that have been archived on an external drive have been affected.

Last year, before Windows 10 was installed, I had to print out some of these covers, and they worked fine on both Canon printers. Now this year, these same files will not open correctly. The tech from this afternoon managed to open a few archived files, but when I looked closer, there were problems like the cover art that was sharp and crisp, is now slightly out of focus, and bits of each page are missing within the same file. ie photos used on 3 pages may only show the blurred photo on the CD booklet tab, but not on the CD booklet rear or CD inlay. Each folder that opens has different faults - most I cannot correct.

The version of Nero that worked before was Nero 2015, but this was removed when I installed the 2017 Nero Cover Designer. This is driving me nuts!!!

  • Nero has no offices in Australia. There are a large number of websites that say they have x number of agents waiting to answer your questions about just about any software you can think of. Of course, these people are not representatives of the software companies and you have to pay them.

Since you said that everything worked before you went to Win 10, it sounds like an incompatibility somewhere. As said, the latest CoverDesigner is Win 10 compatible.

    However-

If you have a 64 bit system, go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Nero. There should be a Nero CoverDesigner folder. Find the CoverDes.exe file and right click on it. Select Properties. In the Compatibility tab, set the Compatibility mode to Win 7. While there, check the box to "run this program as administrator." Run it and try opening your old files.

    • Something else I'd like you to look at is the CoverDesigner file associations in Control Panel. Go to Control Panel, Default Programs, Associate a file..............
Check what is set for as the default program for .ncd and .nct files. If it's not CoverDesigner, change them to CoverDesigner by using the path to the CoverDes.exe file. That should fix the icon problem and might help fix the other problem.
    • Have you had time to try any of the things I mentioned?

  • The Cover Designer was provided till Nero 2019 but not with Nero 2020. It was operating till I installed Nero 2020. Nero Support is about to remote my computer to resolve this issue with Nero 2020. If resolved in the next 4/5 days, will inform.
