Nero crashes when copying discs

Recently, Nero started to crash when trying to copy certain CDs. The problem happens when Nero is doing the initial read of a disc. In the log, this happens right after indicating, "Generation of disc structures completed." Then I get a "Nero Burning ROM has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will the close the program and notify you if a solution is available." Of course, that won't ever happen, so I've come here. At this point in the process, Nero restarts.

I thought the problem had to do with Gracenote, since the crash usually happens right after Gracenote launches and I am prompted to select the desired version. I deactivated Gracenote and it still crashes at this point. Oddly enough, I am still able to rip discs, I just can't copy certain CDs. Why certain discs copy and others don't is unknown to me. As I mentioned, this doesn't happen all of the time; the software works perfectly some of the time. This is too new of a problem for me to give a percentage of failed burns, but it's significant. I am running Nero 2014 version 15.0.25001 on a computer with Windows 10 Home, version 1607. I look forward to your responses.

  • Hi Joe-

v14 isn't Win 10 compatible although some people can run it normally in Win 10 and some people need to run it in compatibility mode.

Just to make things clear, are these problem discs possibly copy protected?

  • Ugh, it seems like I just purchased this version of Nero and it's already outdated. I tried to keep my old version of Windows, but the OS updated itself. It sounds like my solution is to buy the Nero software again. It would be nice if Nero created a patch for such situations. I don't know what difference it could possibly have in this situation, but I haven't paid attention to the copyright status of the discs to provide an answer. Since you thought it important enough to ask, what difference would that make anyway?

I'm referring to "copy protection", not "copyright protection." I've made the same mistake in the past. Most commercial discs have "copy protection" which simply means, it has software to prevent a person from copying them. The various versions of Nero are not consistent in detecting copy protection. In some cases, it varies with the apps within a particular version.

If you want to run v14 in Win10, I suggest changing the compatibility mode to Win 8 or earlier.

In the case of Burning Rom, go here-

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Nero\Nero 2014\Nero Burning ROM

and find the nero.exe file. Right click on it and select Properties. In the Compatibility tab, change the mode to Win 8 or earlier. While there, check the box to "Run this program as Administrator."

Then, when you run Burning Rom, incompatibilities with Win 10 shouldn't be there. It doesn't guarantee that your problem will be resolved.

Joe, I have the exact same problem with Nero. Naturally, Nero never offers a patch to keep their previous software versions working, they just want you to buy the new version. (To set to rest the conversation about copy protection vs. copyright protection, the same disc copies perfectly on the same version of Nero on a Windows 7 computer. So it's not the disc, it's Nero.) In any case, I downloaded the trial version of the latest version of Nero for my Windows 10 computer. I'm glad that I did, because it has the exact same problem! Nero crashes when copying certain CDs. It always happens when connecting to Gracenote. I went back and forth with customer support for weeks. They used their collection tool to analyze what is going wrong. The conclusion: they have no idea why their newest (or older) software doesn't work with Windows 10. I'm now exploring other brands of software that can accomplish the simple task of copying a CD.

  • If you're using the same serial number for Nero on two different computers, the patents will only be activated on the first computer you installed it on. I wouldn't think that would be the cause of your problem but one never knows. If you want to run it in Win 10, I suggest you first uninstall it from Win 7. Then, send an e-mail to patent.activations@nero.com to get the patents reactivated. Include your serial number in the e-mail.

Of course, if you're running v14, I suggest doing the things I mentioned. Since Mr. Richter didn't respond to that, I assume it worked.

The trial versions of Nero are limited to processing either 100 MB of data or 30 seconds of video. It's likely the reason why v2017 wont copy the discs.
