Nero Platinum 2017 unable to burn Media Slide Show to DVD

Nero Platinum 2017 unable to burn Media Slide Show to DVD. Unless I am doing something wrong, I created the picture only slideshow with theme and music and it plays perfectly on the computer but when I try to burn it to a DVD to play on any DVD player the actual project size is showing 0 bytes although the information panel on the slide pack says there are 153 photos in it and it goes for 13:23 minutes duration. When I click on burn it the 2nd button to press burn is greyed out. I have tried saving the slideshow and then if I go to where it says its located in explorer I can't see any file there. Please help as I was contemplating upgrading to Nero Platinum 2018 but not if this doesn't work.

  • Hi Steve-

To burn a DVD that is playable in a standalone DVD player, you have to burn a DVD-Video disc. To do that, you would need to create your project in either Nero Video or as a slide show in Nero MediaHome and burn it as a DVD-Video.

Sounds to me like you're using Burning Rom or Nero Express. Is that correct?

  • Hi Wither1, I created the project (slideshow - pictures only) in Nero MediaHome. From within this I then clicked on Burn and then chose DVD-Video but the final burn button is greyed out. If I look at the details of the Project size it says "0 bytes" although I can play the slideshow from within MediaHome and the information about the slideshow confirms there are 153 photos and it runs for 13 plus minutes. For some reason I don't think it is saving to a file and hence why there are 0 bytes in the project and if I go looking for it in the nominates save location which is basically in my Videos folder, I can't see any Nero related file there. To prove it wasn't an issue with my DVD burner I opened Nero Express and burnt a number of files to DVD disc without any issue.

Do the slideshows (like the one I created has a theme and my music files included) store as a file format somewhere?

  • Good morning Steve-

Open the Nero ControlCenter and select Serial Numbers. Is your purchased serial number shown and is it correct? DVD-Video burning isn't possible from a trial version, which is what you have when the purchased serial number isn't inserted in the ControlCenter.

If there's a trial version serial number there, you can remove it, although you don't need to once the purchased serial number is added. If you had another version of Nero installed and it's serial number is shown, you should remove it for troubleshooting purposes. You can always add it back in, if you want to.

  • Good Morning Wither 1

I checked and it has the correct serial numbers for the purchased version. I never install trial software any way. I know other stuff works because I successfully burnt a data disc from Nero Express which is part of Nero Platinum 2017.

I might have to try and contact Nero technical support. I still think the problem is that the Nero MediaHome slidepack is not actually saving to a file where its supposed too. This would explain why when I get to the burning stage and insert my blank DVD-R, I can see if the details that the project has "0 bytes" even though its got probably close to 1GB of photos linked to it and 3 MP3 songs. This is why the last "Burn" option is greyed out because it doesn't think there is any information to burn.

I really appreciate you taking the time to offer assistance.

  • 153 slides are 1 GB?

You can go to tech support at any time.

If you remove the mp3's, do you still get the same result?

If you select any other of the project types, such as blu-ray, do you still have the same problem?

I was trying this in v2015 (NMH v1.30......). The final burn button was greyed out because I didn't have the correct type of disc inserted. It did show the size of my project. I'll have to fire up my other system with v2017 installed.

  • I'm in v2017 now. I only have a Blu-ray drive on this system.

I created a slide show and when I select DVD-Video, it says that I have the wrong type disc in the drive. That's correct because there is a burned Blu-ray disc in the drive. It shows the project size as 0 bytes. So I put a DVD+RW which has other content on it in the drive and it shows the project size correctly and the Burn button is available.

I switched to Blu-ray video, and it gives me the same error message because the Blu-ray disc is finalized but it correctly shows the size of the project. There was a maybe 10-15 second delay before it showed the size.

I think you may have led me to a the problem and a solution. So its not quite the same thing as you have mentioned as I have 2 burners in my tower computer. One is a Blu-ray burner and the other is a DVD burner. I had tried both of these and using DVD-R blank discs (multiple ones). I always chose DVD Video for the format and It never gave me a message about using the wrong media type. So I went back into the slideshow which I had chosen a 4K Theme and I removed and replaced it for a standard theme and then saved it and went through the same process of choosing DVD Video for the format and then it came up with a project size and DVD size and the burn button wasn't greyed out.

Its just in the process of burning now so I will check it when finished and let you know the results. So its looking like it was because I used the 4K theme which I assume would need a Blu-ray blank disc to play in 4K. Fingers crossed and thanks again for all your help on this one

  • Are you using a 64 bit system? In addition, there's no way to burn to 4K resolution. The maximum will be 1920x......

  • Yes I'm using Windows 7 64 bit. That probably explains it. I didn't actually realise in the theme's that the ones listed 4K meant anything more than being in the highest quality and didn't realise there were system limitations on using them.

The test burn I did worked ok but I'll probably look at tweaking it a bit as there was a couple of periods of black screen (not long only about 5 secs) where there was a black screen before the transition to the next photo. It probably only happened about 3-4 times.

    Thanks for all your help.

  • I asked about 64 bit because it's required for encoding 4k video. So, you're good there.

The reason one can't get a higher resolution than 1920x is because there are no commercially available blank Blu-ray discs or blu-ray players that support 4K yet. I don't know how people can play the available 4K movie discs in 4k. Perhaps somebody can prove me wrong.

I used one of the 4k themes but it wasn't visible. I think that's because I have the graphics card on this work station disabled (It overheats and I get BSODs). Dell tells me to do a factory reset but that only works for a few months.

I only have a 1 minute slide show but I don't see any black screens.

  • Yep I'm pretty sure your right. I did not the time span of the black screen and I did notice that the music from the slidepack continued to play. Its all good, I'll play around with it more and see how the next one goes. Its a slide pack of photos of my sons football team from season so I have to do 13 separate packs/burns so I'll see how they go. Thanks again.

  • Hi Steve,
I'm not sure if you might be suffering a similar situation to the one that I had with MediaHome as in the below post? ...

    But maybe worth a try?

    http://forum.nero.com/nero_eng/topics...

Well ... what d' ya know?

After tearing my hair out over this problem ...

Another piece of software I ran today reported an error with MSVCR100.dll

    Yep, that old problem. *sigh*

Nero was not giving me any error message ... but I uninstalled Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 x86 Redistributable and re-installed it ...

Presto! Now Nero Video lets me select "Smart 3D" templates and Nero MediaHome Slideshow themes all work again.

    Sheesh!

    Hi Lucky Phil

Thanks for replying but I think I have sorted out the issue thanks to wither1.

It looks like if I choose a 4K theme and have a blank DVD disc it thinks its incompatible format and doesn't read the slideshow file when calculating the burn time.

As soon as I choose a non 4K theme it works ok.

    Thanks again
