I’m thinking this product sucks

Nero Will Not Play my store bought DVD-Video

I purchased the Memorex CD/DVD Writer which shows/lists on the outside of the box (edge) Disk Compatibility DVD-Video. I have installed the device and downloaded and installed Nero Media Home along with online updates (as well as rebooted my computer as prompted).

After inserting a DVD-Video purchased at the same store where I purchased this product the Nero Media Home display screen will display the video by name and I can find two "Play" tabs, but after selecting either play tab, nothing happens - it appears to not play the DVD-Video.

  • Hello Teo-

Is the light on the drive blinking after you hit Play? It may take a minute to load the video.

  • When I insert the DVD-Video into the external drive I can hear the drive spin and the light of the external drive will be on for about 10 seconds - subsequently the name of the film will appear along with an index tab for the film (in the center and in the upper left corner within Nero Media Home) and a play icon (at the bottom center within Nero Media Home and when I right click on either of the above mentioned icons). After that, nothing happens and nothing I do (no cursor movements nor right or left clicking of the mouse/touchpad) results in the playing of the DVD.

Bottom line: After I hit Play there are no lights blinking on the external (or internal) drive.

I have also tried to solve the problem by opening Windows Media Player and then opening My PC and clicking and dragging the icon for the DVD RW Drive (which shows the drive and the name of the film) into the Windows Media Player... initially Windows Media Player shows "opening Media" and the disk drive light will run for about 1 second and then a Windows Media Player notification box will appear with the message "Windows Media Player encountered a problem while playing this file."

  • That tends to indicate a problem with the disc.

Open File Explorer and, with the disc in the drive, right click on the drive and select Explore. Is there a Video_TS folder?

I'm wondering if the disc is a AVCHD-DVD which requires a blu-ray player for playback.

In addition, can you play an audio CD in NMH from this drive?

  • I have tried with multiple DVD video/film/movie disks, all of which worked without issue on my prior laptop (with had an internal DVD drive).

All of the disks are store or Amazon purchased and have DVD-Video on the packaging and on the disks. None of the disks are blu-ray.

I opened File Explorer with the disc(s) in the drive, right clicked on the drive and selected Open. There was a Video_TS folder for all disks.

I have audio CDs (no music CDs, and I am not sure if they have NMH format). Upon inserting this audio CD into the Memorex CD/DVD Writer the audio will automatically begin to play in Nero Media Home, or I can get the audio files to play in Windows Media Player. (I do note that when a DVD-Video is inserted into the external drive that Nero Media Home will only display (2) play icons, whereas when a audio CD is inserted into the external drive Nero Media Home will display icons for stop, previous, play/pause, fast forward, next, shuffle, repeat and volume.)

I specifically purchased this product with the desire to use it to play DVD-Videos.

I do thank you for responding to my ticket(s), but my issue is not yet solved and the product does not yet perform the desired and advertised function..

  • It's possible you need to update the drive firmware (not the Windows driver).

What is the exact model number for your drive?

  • I can't find that drive anywhere as v7. It may have been rebadged as Liteon or something else.

I don't know if this utility will help-

    http://driverplex.com/wp-content/uplo...

You might also go to Control Panel and search on Troubleshooting. That should bring up the hardware trouble shooting utility. Run it.

Driver Whiz was installed and found 72 up to date drivers and 9 out of date drivers - and offered to sell me a $24.95 or $29.95 package to update the 1 / 9 drives... but there is no indication it is referring to the external CD/DVD drive... so it MIGHT work or might be a further waste of time or money. NO THANKS. I would rather return the product and get my money back than throw more good money after bad.

Control Pannel Troubleshooting led me to more inconclusive dead ends.

After performing both of the above and trying to play a DVD-Video I now get a warning box "Microsoft .NET Framework" "Unhandled exception has occurred..." Regardless if I select "Continue" or "Quit" the net result is the same - nothing / no change / no functionality.

Both USB connections are connected directly to the computer USB outlets/motherboard.

  • In regards to your earlier comment thanking me for responding to your tickets, I'm not a Nero employee. Did you send an e-mail to techsupport@nero.com?

As I questioned, Driver Whiz is doing a come-on just like so much of the other free software out there. I've been through that a number of times.

I questioned the firmware because if CD playback works and DVD playback doesn't, or vice versa, the firmware is usually the cause. The fact that I can't find your drive anywhere on the web (as v7) except for a Gateway system makes it nearly impossible.

Go to Control Panel, Device Manager, DVD/CD.......... If your drive is shown there, click on it. Which driver is installed?

  • Thanks for the continuing help. From the Control Panel, Device Manager, DVD/CD Rom Drives it shows the device as "Memorex MRX-650LE v7 USB device"

Under the General tab for Device Properties it shows "This device is working properly". Selecting update driver software (from the internet and/or from the computer) results in a message "The best driver software for your device is already installed" and "Windows has determined the driver software for your device is up to date."

When double clicking on the device I was able to view the DVD region - it was not assigned and I changed it to Region 1 - but still no joy / no functionality.

Thanks for your help and suggestions - I will send an e-mail to techsupport@nero.com

  • Windows always reports that the device is working unless there's a serious problem. In addition, if your Windows is up to date, it will always report that you have the latest driver.

However, firmware is not a driver (most computer vendor support sites incorrectly call it a driver). Firmware is essentially an operating system built into the drive itself.
A person has to download/install firmware independent of Windows.

Please let me know what tech support has to say.

  • More dead ends followed by success.

Installed Windows 10 along with the faint hope that it might resolve the problem. After using it for less than an hour Windows 10 seems to be agreeable to me (although I am not sold on groove music), but the Memorex device/Nero still would not play my DVDs...

Windows 10 prompted me with the option to look for apps that might play the DVD. In performing research I was led to these pages one after another...

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/wi...

    http://www.pcworld.com/article/291852...

    http://www.gizmag.com/free-apps-play-...

    http://www.pcworld.com/article/295372...

    http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-...

Downloaded and Installed VideoLAN and I immediately recognized that I previously had this software more than a half a dozen years ago and used it all the time with 100% satisfaction. Now upon loading a DVD into the external drive VideoLAN immediately pops up and allows me to play/watch the DVD...

Thanks Wither 1 for your continued assistance and many helpful suggestions that prevented me from giving up, returning the external drive, or taking an axe to it...

P.S. I wonder if I should have known (or should have figured out earlier) that I needed / could have used / should have sought out some other DVD playback software...

P.P.S. Still have not heard back from techsupport@nero.com (it has only been 18 hours since sending my e-mail) but I am satisfied that the hardware I purchased finally functions and pleased to be reunited with my old standby - VLC media player software (for video and music playback).

  • Sometimes I'm a little slow.

You said you installed Nero MediaHome. Is this the free version? The free version will not playback a DVD. You need the DVD plug-in. However, you have to buy the whole package and, if you need Nero for any other projects, it's more cost effective to buy either v2015 Classic or Platinum, depending on your needs.

  • I’m thinking the documentation and marketing for purchase of NERO software (for the Memorex CD/DVD player) sucks
    2
There is the rub... the packaging on the product leads the consumer to believe it provides DVD-Video functionality with no mention of the need to purchase software. How interesting to struggle so much as I did to find out in the end that a customer needs to purchase additional non included components for the item to work as reasonably expected. It seems akin to purchasing a new truck and then subsequently being told you also need to purchase an engine to drive the truck off the lot....

In the past a customer purchase a piece of information technology and the software to make it functional came in the package. It has been about 5 years since I upgraded my personal computer but a lot seems to have changed - not only do you now go on line to get the software but many/most companies use this online approach as an opportunity to prey or leech off their new customer by cornering them into making additional purchase(s) to get the expected / desired functionality...

Possibly an more experienced or expert computer user would be fully aware of this kind of marketing or sales approach but it is pretty opaque for a novice or someone with moderate computer skills such as myself - I suspected that I was being led to purchase the software for a quick and easy (and upsell more costly) fix - but none of my inquires or research, nor any of the error messages I got back nor software fixes I sought out came out clearly with the revelation that purchase of the Nero software package was the necessary solution to my problem (as you state in your last post). My preferred solution was to return the product and I would have rather purchased a wide screen TV with built in DVD player...

But in fact as I eventually uncovered, with VideoLAN / VLC media player no purchase of a Nero software package is necessary to satisfy my principle desire to occasionally watch my modest library of DVD-Videos with the Memorex 8X Slim DVD Multi-Format Recorder External / Model No. MRX-650LE v7

To put the most positive spin on this (often aggravating) experience I will say that I learned a lot about the functionality and terminology through following your suggestions, I am more attuned to the overall general predatory or parasitic nature of current hardware and software vendors, and I will opt to conclude by saying All Is Well That Ends Well... and update my "how does this make you feel" comment to be more on point.
    • I agree with you that the descriptions of the functionality for some of their products leave a lot to be desired. I would have a hard time trying to figure out if I needed Classic or Platinum based on the descriptions provided. They do have some comparison charts but they're not easily found.

At least we identified what the problem is.
    • As I just said below, I also thought I was purchasing something that would do what it said. Led me to believe it was saying that's all I need to do. Bummer this isn't illegal, in other words "False advertising". Should be. Nero may respond to my inquiries, and I'll also write to their techsupport@nero.com and see how to do this/how much money I'll have to pay. Weird, though, that on a laptop with windows media player it forces you to do this pay membership though (or it won't play)!

  • I’m Disappointed, frustrated, sad, confused, and anxious
Just installed Liteon eBAU108--It told me I had to install NERO. Funny, I thought, isn't this that program that wouldn't allow me to play DVD's on my previous computer without paying some fee (I have Windows media player already)? Sure enough, I couldn't proceed with this DVD player to show my class until I downloaded NERO. Okay...then Nero says I now have a free one month trial to play movies. Really, Nero? How sweet of you to allow me a free month to play videos on an external drive that was already paid for to, guess what: Play DVD's! But okay, I give up, I'll just play the movie for free this month and deal with that later. Maybe I'm misunderstanding the problem. So I play the movie for my students, but guess what? There's no sound! This is not cool. Why is this happening? Can I not just install what I bought and just pulled out of the brand new box, and just play it? That's really all I'm wanting to do here.
    • Just to test if the issue is with Nero or not ... does the DVD play fine with other software - the free VLC media player for example?

Also ... are you using Nero MediaHome to play the DVD?

Is Nero MediaHome (which is a free app) up to date?

There might be some updates available that will fix the audio problem ...
    • How did the liteon drive tell you that "you had to install Nero"? The drive OEMs typically package "free" Essentials versions of Nero whose capabilities are specified by the OEM. Disc playback may not be one of them. In many cases the Essentials versions are either old versions or versions incompatible with the OS the drive is installed on. Is there a version of Nero on the drive? If there is, it might have the capability you want. Since you've already installed v2016, you might need to uninstall it to use any version of Nero that is on the drive. I couldn't tell you that until you told you told me what the name of the installation file.

The downloads are trial versions until you insert a purchased serial number.

I agree with Lucky Phil' questions.
