Nero 9 Showtime 'step-by-step' playback feature.

For video playback I still use Nero 9 Showtime - because it has a unique 'step-by-step' playback feature - that was removed from all later versions of Nero.
But that feature works only on FLV files - not MOV or MP4 files. I wonder if there is some way to adjust Nero 9 Showtime so that this feature will work on MOV & MP4 formats.

  • hey Robert-

Do you have either Quicktime or the QuickTime Player installed? In my experience, one of those is needed to work with .mov.

do you have the patents activated in v9?

What is the version for Burning Rom?

I don't have v9 installed on this system so I can't check it out but I will in a few days. If I don't respond by Sunday, ping me.

  • All of your questions are irrelevant. I'm talking here about a particular feature in Nero 9 Showtime called 'Frame Advance' - in which a video can be moved in very small increments. This is invaluable for studying any sort of instructional or demonstration video - in my case 'dancing'.
No other video player - including so-called upgrades to Nero - have this feature.
Nero 9 Showtime 'plays' all formats - FLV, MOV & MP4 - equally well. But the 'Frame Advance' feature works only on FLV videos.
Note that none of the commonly used video players play all three video formats.
Recently this year 'Apple' virtually destroyed the FLV format. Most of my video clip library came from YouTube in FLV. Now YouTube is all MP4.
I have a video converter & I'm used to converting my Canon camera MOV files to FLV, & now I have to convert MP4 files to FLV.
To fully understand what I'm talking about, install Nero 9 & when ready let me know directly at bob.v@rogers.com or by Reply to this Topic & I'll walk you thru how to test the 'Frame Advance' feature.

  • I know what you're talking about but I haven't tried anything in ShowTime in the last couple of months when I last worked with someone else in the forum on another feature. Note that the forum is all you have in regards to these issues since tech support no longer supports anything older than v11.

    My questions are relevant.

In regards to mpeg-4, the patents need to be activated to do things like editing. I don't know if what you're doing comes under that umbrella until I try it.

For .mov, Nero often uses the codecs provided in those programs.

I asked about your version of Burning Rom because, frequently, people with older versions of Nero don't have the latest updates which may have resolved their issues. In other cases, they're using Essentials versions which don't support the features they want to use.

To my knowledge, I'm the only frequent forum contributor who has v9 installed so, it's up to you if you want to work with me on this. It's just going to be a few days before I get access to it on my other system. I'm on vacation.

  • OK I'll stay with you. No rush - enjoy your vacation.
Yes I have the Quicktime programs installed. No need to use them though.
    Yes all patents are activated.
After Nero 9 I upgraded to Nero 10 then to Nero 12. So Nero Burning ROM is in Nero 12. When I use it, it works great.
The 'Frame Advance' feature disappeared from Nero Kwik Media from Nero 10 on. Unless you tell me otherwise, I don't believe that it is in Nero 14.
After Nero 10 I told Nero about this loss of an important feature. Other than getting an acknowledgement, I have not seen any action on the matter.
Fortunately when I buy new software I always 'Save & Run', which means that I keep all installation files in my Downloads folder. I have learned the hard way that "New does not mean Better". So I no longer waste money on unnecessary updates\upgrades. In addition to Nero 9 I have two other programs where I carefully preserve older versions.
When you have access to Nero 9 Showtime again, as a reminder, do this ~
    Open an FLV video clip.
Left Click on the screen to show the 'Control Panel'. Click the 'Pause' button.
To the Left of the Pause button there are two Forward arrows. The first one is 'Frame Advance', the second one is 'Fast Forward'.
Now - do either of these ~
Left Click on the 'Frame Advance' arrow,
    - OR - much easier ~
    Press 'T' on the keyboard.
In both cases you will see the video advance in tiny increments - that is 'Frame by Frame Advance' (or as I call it - 'step-by-step').
If you Click on the 'Fast Forward' button (which all video players have), the video advances in very big increments.
Now repeat the process for a MOV video & an MP4 video. You will see that the video merely freezes & flashes - it does not advance.

For me it is not a life-threating issue. But it means that I have to do a lot more video conversions.
I'm used to converting my camera MOV videos to FLV, always with a noticeable loss of definition.
When YouTube was all FLV, I didn't have to do any conversions on Downloads.
Now YouTube is all MP4. I have to convert to FLV, again with a noticeable loss of definition.
I find that I can convert MOV to MP4 without loss of definition.
Therefore, if you can tell me how to get MP4 videos to play with 'Frame Advance' in Nero 9 Showtime, I will be eternally grateful.

I'll never understand why Nero gave up a very unique & very valuable feature after Nero 9. Maybe you can talk with Nero - I'm sure you have more clout than me.

  • After Nero v9, Nero changed ShowTime to Nero MediaHub, then KwikMedia, then Nero MediaHome (which is confusing to people who have the older Nero MediaHome 4 (or earlier)). Many features of Showtime were lost and there was quite an uproar about it in the old forum.

You don't make reference to Burning Rom until you get to v12. That suggests your copy of v9 is an Essentials version. Did you, or did you not, have a purchased version of v9 and did it include Burning Rom? If it did, please identify the version, per my instructions.

  • Nero 9 is a purchased, licensed & registered full feature Version 9.4.44.
Likewise, Nero 12 Platinum is a purchased upgrade. The original installation file says V 12.0.02900. Today I did a full Update. I find that each element has a different Version number.
Within the next two days I could buy Nero 2014 Platinum for a Special price of CAD$39.99. Sounds like a good deal - but why should I bother?
In Nero 9 I use only Showtime.
In Nero 12 I use Burning ROM & Nero Video. Nothing else.
Today I looked at MediaHome & confirmed that the 'Frame Advance' feature is not there.
For video conversions, edits\merge etc. I use a different program.
For System & Data Backups I have better alternatives to Backitup.

Another key feature of Nero 9 Showtime is that it is the only video player (incl. Nero 'upgrades') that plays in a true 'Full Screen' - free of all clutter like Toolbars at the top & bottom. In Nero Showtime you only have to move the mouse to open then close any Toolbars or Control Panels.

In a changing world - MP4 taking over FLV (thanks to arrogant Apple) - all that Nero needed to do was to update Nero 9 Showtime to apply the 'Frame Advance' feature to MP4 files. Then it would have a world beating product. But they blew it.

Nero, just like other software developers - MS, Apple & many others - does Updates & Upgrades to make an extra buck. And they encourage Community Forums. But they never listen to their customers anyway.

  • I won't say that Nero doesn't listen to their customers, in all cases. I think a lot depends on how many people use a particular feature and, then, is it worth spending a lot of time to resolve a problem which benefits only a very small percentage of the users. Nero used that approach to in regards to the new Backitup 2014 and I think it backfired.

I'll be able to take a look at this on Sunday. If I don't respond, please post to remind me. I can't keep track of every thread. I have another one on v8 that I need to look into.

  • Sorry for taking so long to catch up with you.

I opened .mov, .mpeg-4 and .mts files in ShowTime v9. Clicking on the Step button or hitting T on my keyboard, causes them to step in frames. Since I only have one title in my Videos, the Next button isn't available. I don't have a .flv to work with.

In the Video Options, do you have hardware acceleration turned on?

  • Never say sorry. NO I did not have 'Hardware acceleration' turned on. NOW I do.
Now I find that all recent MOV videos play equally well as FLV in 'Frame Advance'.
This is a big step forward for me because most of my new videos are taken on my or my dance partners Canon cameras in MOV. Now I don't have to convert MOV to FLV, with its loss of definition.
I find that older MOV files & all MP4 files do play with 'Frame Advance', but they flash off\on between Frame Advances. This is annoying but I still have useable files. I can continue to convert MP4 to FPV, but if you have a simpler way around that, I would appreciate knowing.
Meanwhile thanks for solving the main part of my problem

If you don't mind, I have another problem. When I open Nero 9 Showtime & open a Playlist & highlight a video the 'Play' button does not light up. So I can't Play from my Playlists. I have no problem in opening & playing a video from Windows Explorer.
Is there a simple solution - or do I have to re-build my Playlists?

I'm not sure about the "flash off/on". Are you talking about a short delay when going from frame to frame? I think I saw that in one of the files I used (I don't have v9 on this system).

I'll need to check your last question in the morning when I can get into ShowTime.

  • The "flash off/on" is literally that - when pressing the Frame Advance button or 'T' the screen goes black then the picture comes on again. Only a fraction of a second. Each time the Frame Advance does move.
Applies only to MP4 files. The MOV files work very well now.

  • I get the same behavior regardless of the file format and whether or not I turn on hardware acceleration. However, there are some files, independent of format, which don't demonstrate that behavior. These are primarily low resolution video. However, I tried a 1080p .mkv and it didn't demonstrate this behavior and a 1080p .mp4 that did. The format of the video in the .mkv is AVC which is H.264/mpeg-4 as is the second video. I'm thinking some of the difference may be in the bit rates. The first has a higher bit rate, which is variable, than the second.

If Mister_M saw this, I think he could explain it in a heartbeat.

Of course, the video card in use and the monitor refresh rate would have some effect from computer to computer, when using the same video.

In regards to your question about playlists, those are only for audio files. For some reason, I didn't think of that last night.

  • Let me address the last line first - re Playlists. I'll try to be very tactful & say "with all due respect" that what you say about Playlists "being only for audio files" is "far from the truth". In Showtime I have 20 Playlists all with multiple video files. For years these served me very well, always able to Select & Play any video - or even the whole Playlist.
I can't pinpoint when my current problem started, but very recently I had to have Windows 7 reinstalled & after that I had a lot of programs to reinstall, including Nero 9. Most likely the problem started as a result of that.
In any case, I just Removed then Re-created two of the Playlists, & now they work fine. I have 18 more to go, then I'll be back in business. Won't take long - maybe an hour.
Re audio files, I've never used Showtime for audio. I use iTunes (V 10 - NEVER V 11 which caused me so much misery that I had to do a full System Restore).

Re the first part of your reply, you are taking me into video technical matters that are over my head. I know a little about H.264 which is a setting I use in my Video Editor\Converter program. I know a little about Resolution & FPS. I've never heard of ".mkv". I know nothing about "bit rates" except knowing that I can change this in my Video Editor\Converter program, but I always choose 'Keep Original'.
I know nothing about video cards nor monitor refresh rates.

So right now I'm left with the "flash off/on" nuisance on MP4 files. If you have a technical adjustment that fixes that I would be happy.

BTW - who on earth is 'Mister_M'? Sounds like a comic book hero or a wrestler on TV.

I have no other ideas about the mp4 other than what you're doing.

Re Playlists - these additional comments are probably only of ACADEMIC interest by now.
I'm almost done in Removing\Recreating my Playlists, which are now back to working great. I took time out to look at the Playlist .M3U files in 'My Documents\Nero Collections'. I checked 'Properties' on one file & noticed "File Type - MP3 Playlist" & "Opens with - iTunes". In My Music I checked my iTunes Libraries & found that while most files are ',m4a' there are still a lot of '.mp3' files.
In that one file I changed "Open with" to "Nero ShowTime". Then I found that all of the files in that folder had automatically changed to "Open with - Nero ShowTime".
None of that has ever affected my ShowTime Playlists in the past nor now currently.

I've only ever used ShowTime for video playback. Creating video Playlists is actually very easy.

Probably by now very few people use Nero 9 ShowTime - because they didn't use or don't miss the 'Frame advance' feature. But if you come across anybody with problems similar to mine you can refer them to me, if that is allowed. Let me know & I'll give you my email address.

If others - including Mister_M - follow this thread & can give me a solution on the MP4 'flash off\on' matter, that would be very nice.

Meanwhile, you have been very helpful to me & I thank you very much.

A lot of people using Nero versions 10 or later also keep v9 or earlier just because of the playback features in ShowTime that aren't contained in Nero MediaHome.

  • So here I am. Came back from a business trip yesterday night.

I also have a few questions before I can perhaps provide a sufficient answer to the black frames.

    1. Over all, what operating system do you use?
    2. What graphic card is used on your system?
    3. What resolution do your problematic videos have?
    4. What frame rate do they have?

The best would be, if you could provide us a small sample video, where this happens.

Or wither, could you provide me the 1080p *.mkv (without the problem) and the 1080p *.mp4 (with the problem) so that I can compare those?

But after all I've read here it seems to be a software issue, that cannot be solved. Let's see, what I find, when I have the information.

P.S. Unfortunately I never used Nero 9. I was I bit disappointed by Nero 8 that time, so that I didn't want to upgrade back then. I upgraded to Nero 10 directly.

  • Thanks Wither & welcome Mister_M for getting involved in this Post.

I have a good video edit\conversion program so I tried the MKV format (which is quite new to me) - I converted MOV to MKV & also MP4 to MKV. I confirm that MKV works very well in 9 Showtime with no problems in the 'Frame Advance' feature. There is a big difference in file sizes between MKV & FLV, but I guess that that is a mere detail at this point.

Some background history for your & Mister_M's benefit.
My Video library is virtually all FLV. From 2 sources - A. YouTube downloads when they were all FLV, & B. imports from my Canon camera which are MOV files, which after any required editing\merging, I converted to FLV (mainly because I found that MOV did not work in the 'Frame Advance' feature, & partly because of the huge reduction in file size).
When recently Apple forced the marketplace to switch from FLV to MP4, YouTube followed suit so now all YouTube videos are in MP4. So I was forced to get familiar with the MP4 format.
Initially I found that MP4 files did not work at all in 'Frame Advance'. The files just froze up, just like MOV files.
After enabling 'Hardware Acceleration' (per Wither's tip) things improved somewhat so that MP4 files now do move in 'Frame Advance', but with this annoying flash off\on with each frame advance.
MOV files drive me crazy. Today I played a MOV file that worked very well in 'Frame Advance'. But that was an unexplained exception, & all other MOV files freeze up when I try 'Frame Advance'.

Now I can live with the current situation. I can convert MOV & MP4 files to MKV &\or to FLV. But there is a lot more conversion involved now, & I might have to get used to handling & storing much larger file sizes.

It would be more than nice if there was some adjustment I could make in 9 Showtime to get MP4 & MOV files to work as well as FLV & MKV files.

    Mister_M - re your questions ~
    1. Windows 7 Home Ed.
    2. graphics card - don't know - how do I find that?
    3 & 4 re resolution & frame rates ~
    Original off-camera MOV files are 1920 X 1080 23 FPS
    Converted MOV files are 1280 X 720 23 FPS
Most of the MP4 files are conversions with 1280 X 720 23 FPS
    Some YouTube downloads in MP4 are 640 X 360 25 to 29 FPS.
All of these files have the same problem in Showtime.

Note that all file formats play well in Showtime. Unlike other commonly used video players which do not play all file formats.

  • The only difference I see is in the frame rates... But I don't think that this is an issue.

It looks like a software issue. But could one of you test the "problematic" mp4 file, that wither uploaded, start Nero Recode, choose "Recode DVDs and Videos to Nero Digital", import the video and press the "Trim Movie" button?

Now press the one frame forward button. Does the problem exist here, too?

If yes, I've to dig a bit deeper with the analysis, if no, it probably is a software issue with which you have to live.

    Generic PnP Monitor - DX-32E150A11

Re Camera MOV files - actually I have only a few MOV files saved in my Video Library because as mentioned in previous replies I have followed the practice of converting MOV to FLV, then Deleting the MOV files.
Very recently I changed my camera settings from 1920 X 1080 to 1280 X 720. I see no reduction in video quality, the file sizes are somewhat smaller, & I can get more videos on my camera card. So I think that you can ignore 1920 X 1080 as a possible issue

Just saw Mister_M's overlapping reply so I'll move on to trying the 'Nero Digital' & 'Nero Recode' suggestion.

  • Mister_M - I opened Nero Recode (12) & could not find any reference to "Recode DVDs and Videos to Nero Digital". Neither before nor after importing a file, & not in the Help files. I've tried Nero Recode before & found that my video edit\conversion program does a much better job.

In the last few days I have been experimenting with file conversions which now includes MP4 & MKV files. I confirmed some things that I already knew, but I learned some new things.
MOV files when converted go DOWN in size. Example ~
Original MOV file .mov 300 MB
Converted to MKV .mkv 290 MB - about the same
    Converted to MP4 .mp4 90 MB - about 30% of the size
Converted to FLV .flv 15 MB - about 5% of the size (with some
    loss of definition)

MP4 files when converted go UP in size. Example ~
    YouTube download .mp4 28 MB
Converted to MKV .mkv 58 MB - about double
Converted to FLV .flv 60 MB - about double
Converted to FLV with .flv 79 MB - more than double
    Nero Recode

I think that by now we all agree that the only variable in the functioning of the 'Frame Advance' feature is File Type.
FLV & MKV work very well.
MP4 works not too badly - just the annoying flash off\on with each frame advance.
MOV files don't work well at all.

Therefore, in order to get on with life, I will ~
Continue to convert MOV to FLV, as I've done in past years.
Convert YouTube MP4 downloads to MKV.

I have learned some very useful things from your replies, & I thank you very much.

  • To do what Mister_M requested, one has to use v10 or earlier. I'll try it tomorrow.

File sizes has to do with compression. For instance, one of the main advantages of mpeg-4 is that it's more compressible than mpeg-2. A comparison to the other formats would require an extensive discussion. Although I don't think that compression is a factor here, it could be in the lossless characteristics of each format and that could be related to compression. That's why we need someone like Mister_M to sort this out. I have a feeling that bitrates has something to do with it as I mentioned before.

  • OK - so I opened Nero 9 Recode & yes I saw the "Recode DVDs and Videos to Nero Digital" button. I followed thru the required steps & Recode created a new MP4 file. I started with an MP4 file 28 MB. The new file was a whopping increase to 260 MB.
In Showtime the new file plays a nice video - better quality than the original file - but the Frame Advance flash off\on is still exactly the same.

  • You didn't need to create a new file. ;) Just import one of the problematic files and open the "Trim Movie" screen. I just wanted to know, if the picture goes black there also when you move one frame forward.

But you can also use Nero Recode from Nero 12. Just import your file there and press the "Edit" button below the preview screen. When you change to the "Trim" tab, click on the last three zeros at "Start" and press the arrow up button, the video will be forwarded frame by frame. If there isn't any black picture, the problem is only related to Nero ShowTime.

You could transcode the problematic videos to another format, but that wouldn't help to find the cause of the problem.

One more task: Open Nero ShowTime, load the problematic file, open the windows task manager at the same time (use ctrl + shift + esc instead of ctrl + alt + del to go to the manager directly) and change to the "Performance" tab.

When you now move one frame forward and the black screen appears, will there be a peak in the CPU utilization (this could lead back to an inefficient programming)?

Have you tested any other software player yet? Like Cyberlink PowerDVD? You could install the trial version to test. If there's no problem neither, it's a ShowTime matter, which I think we won't get solved. Unfortunately the support for older Nero products ended...

After your last post, where you recoded a file and the problem still exists, I assume it's really a ShowTime problem, that has nothing to do with the files.

A last test: Please download the mkv file from here and test it with ShowTime. Are there black flashes?

  • I tried the problem file I uploaded in Recode and it doesn't show the black with frame stepping.

In regards to the CPU usage, it does peak with the same file in v9 ShowTime but the other file I uploaded that doesn't have the problem, showed no peaking.

In your last sentence, you asked to download a file. That appears to be the same file I uploaded. Did you do anything to it.

  • Mister_M - I have no idea what you are talking about.

Coming back to your previous reply:

    Using an MP4 file ~
In Nero 9 Recode - in the 'Trim Video' screen - the Frame Advance works perfectly - no black screen.
In Nero 12 Recode - when the video is playing & I press the Start - Up Arrow - that just takes me back to the beginning of the video. When I press the Pause button & press the Start - Up Arrow - that gives me a black screen. In both cases the Frame Advance button is grayed out.

In the Showtime\Task Manager test - when testing a MOV & a MP4 file - yes there is a spike in CPU Usage.

So out of three tests (assuming that I'm doing them all correctly) there is one highly positive result & two negative results.

I downloaded the trial version of Cyberlink PowerDVD. I am quite impressed. It has the two key features that I keep Showtime for - A. a Frame Advance (Step Forward) feature, & B. a true Full Screen, where the upper & lower toolbars are easily hidden\opened. These key features work exactly the same way as in Showtime.
I find that MOV, MP4 & MKV all work great in this program.
BUT - when I try FLV - all I get is sound & NO PICTURE!
The Help files don't help, & in this trial version I don't see a way to get email Support.
I'm not sure that I want to spend $50 or $90 for the full versions just to get proper Support.
    Any ideas on that?

  • Robert-

In Recode 12, select Edit and then Trim. Use the stepping buttons the same as in ShowTime. I tried my problem file and it didn't show the black.

I also tried the .mkv provided by Mister_M in Nero 9 ShowTime and it doesn't show the black anymore.

  • OK - I did it correctly this time! I used an MP4 file & a MOV file (the problematic formats in Showtime) in Recode 9 & Recode 12. In all cases the Frame Advance feature works perfectly!

I don't have any problems in Showtime with MKV or FLV. Which means that I continue to have a useable program as long as I convert MOV to FLV (which I have been doing routinely for years anyway), & convert MP4 to MKV (the new-to-me format that you guys introduced me to). I could also convert MOV to MKV.
It would be nice to be able to avoid all the conversion work.

  • Thank you wither. That was the answer I wanted to read. It shows, that it's not a matter of the encoded video but of the programming of ShowTime itself.

Robert, your last post also strengthens these "investigation" results.

There's no need for further testing. It seems that it depends on the used container format (mp4, mkv, flv...) how the ShowTime player reacts. I don't think you'll be able to solve this problem by yourself, as I stated earlier.

You could try to write tech support about this issue, but since the support has officially ended for Nero 9, I don't think that they can help you.

  • OK - it sounds like a realistic conclusion.

As frequently stated, I can continue with Showtime, with a lot of file conversions.

Re Cyberlink PowerDVD, I was able to reach their tech support by email. Provided that I get a simple fix for the FLV 'no picture' problem, I'll buy this program. Then I'll have an up-to-date program that has all the fine features of Showtime, & plays all file formats without the need for any conversions.
Thanks for referring it to me.

  • One thing we never did determine is, what are your graphics? Although that might not be an issue in ShowTime, it could be the problem in Cyberlink.

You said you double clicked on Display Adapters in Device Manager and it showed the specs for a PNP monitor. Something is wrong there. That show up under Monitors.

  • Since you're using a version of Cyberlink that's newer than Nero 9, you might need to update the drivers to make it work properly. That's the reason for asking. It's also a cure for some problems when one upgrades to later versions of Nero.

You can get the latest version of Catalyst here-

    http://www.amd.com/en-us/innovations/...

However, if you have a laptop, I usually recommend going to the laptop vendor support website and downloading the latest drivers for your particular laptop model. If the newest version of Catalyst doesn't work, you can always roll it back and take this approach.

  • What was disastrous about it?

Go to Control Panel, Device Manager, Display Adapters (I assume this is where you found your graphics information). Click on your graphics device. In the Driver tab, select Roll Back Driver. Roll it back and reboot.

I suggest you go to the vendor support site just to see if there's a later driver for your model. If there is, then download it. Set a System Restore point. Install the driver.

  • Disastrous means that after the AMD update - AND - after the Roll Back -
    Showtime:
MOV, MKV & MP4 - either won't open - 'Error reading file' - or caused Showtime to crash & shutdown.
    FLV continued to work fine.
    Cyberlink PowerDVD 14:
NO files worked - would not even open in the program.

I was so pissed off I was about to do a full 'Restore system settings' from my last Sunday's Windows Image Backup.
But I went to HP Support & ran the 'Scan' for 'Software & Drivers'. I got a long list of available updates, but chose only the one on 'Driver - Graphics'. The others I'll get to later.
After that - I'm close to where I was previously -
    Showtime:
    FLV & MKV work fine.
MP4 is the same as before - plays OK but the 'Step forward' has the same annoying 'flash off\on' problem.
MOV is now worse.- whereas it used to play OK but the 'Step forward' didn't work, now it doesn't even play - just a locked up black screen.
    Cyberlink PowerDVD 14:
MOV, MKV & MP4 all work fine - as previously.
FLV has the same problem - plays with sound but no picture.

Cyberlink replied to my email with a lengthy page of technical stuff on how to analyse the FLV files. I have yet to find the time to do that, but that will be my next step. IF I get PowerDVD 14 working on FLV, that will be the end of story.

  • I would definitely install the other drivers found during the scan.

I reset my Dell workstation a couple of years ago to factory settings. This was for Win 7. I ended up reinstalling many drivers to get it to work properly. Luckily I had the Dell discs and a little knowledge of which driver versions to install.

  • When I went to HP Scan for 'Software & Drivers' it showed 25 items - I printed the list. I Downloaded only the graphics driver, which did correct almost all of the mess created by the AMD update & Roll Back.
When I went back today to HP to repeat the Scan for the other 24 items, it did not give me anything.

I've been trying to construct a Timeline of recent events, which is not easy with all the activity going on. I can't pin down a date for the 'AMD update & Roll Back' but I'm sure it was sometime early this week.
It is a good thing that I'm retired & my girl friend & dance partner has been away for 11 days, so I have time for all this messing around. She returns today!

My Plan for today is ~
'Restore system settings' - as of early hours of Sunday June 8. (I'm assured that this does not affect my Data files, but I re-backed up the key folders anyway).
Re-visit HP for the 'Software & Drivers' updates, hopefully get all 25, & download\install all of them.
    Re-install Cyberlink PowerDVD 14.
Check things out & take it from there.

    A busy evening ahead.

  • I did 'Restore system settings' (after several tries because I found that I had to completely uninstall my anti-virus program before it would Restore successfully).

I checked on the AMD graphics Display Driver & I did a Windows Update driver search which said that the currently installed driver is the best available for my device.

I went to HP Support & ran the 'Scan' for 'Software & Drivers' again but this time nothing came up. I'm not sure if that was functioning properly.

I re-installed the Cyberlink PowerDVD 14 Trial. Then I checked on the two video player programs.

    Showtime:
FLV & MKV - both work very well
MOV & MP4 - both play OK, but both have the 'flash off\on' annoyance in 'Step forward'.
    Cyberlink PowerDVD 14:
MOV, MKV & MP4 - all play well in 'Step forward'
FLV - same as before - plays sound but no picture.

So since the start of this Post I am one major step ahead - that is finding out about the MKV format. I don't understand why, with the same operating system & drivers, some file formats work great in one program but quite differently in the other program.

Anyway, my next step is to work on the Cyberlink page on analysing my FLV files.

  • I don't let Windows determine if I have the latest drivers since, sometimes it's looking only at the Windows drivers included in the OS. I don't know if your HP scan is working either. For my workstation, I just go to the support website and see what's available for it.

I don't follow my own advice sometimes. In this case, I know that there's a later driver for the graphics card in this PC but I haven't gone to NVIDIA to get it.

  • OK - I tried the HP Driver search again which gave nothing, so I went to the AMD website. I found that AMD has an 'Automatic Detect' feature that works much better than HP's, & it quickly came up with the 'Best Driver' for me As I found out after download\install, this was actually a full package of Drivers.
The Display Driver is now - "ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200 Series - Driver Date 29/04/2013 - Version 8.970.100.1100".
It is all academic because it didn't change anything. After the Installation & a computer Restart I checked the two video players & found that I'm back to where I was one or two days ago, namely ~

Now my current mode of operation is ~
    FLV files - use Showtime
    MOV & MP4 - use Cyberlink PowerDVD 14

With this mode of operation I don't need any conversions.
    Also, I don't need MKV.
I'll probably continue to convert Edited MOV files to FLV, solely for 'space saving' reasons, but it is not essential.

I'm still communicating with Cyberlink re FLV files not working in their program. Meanwhile I'm quite OK with my current mode of operation.

The whole origin & purpose of this lengthy Post was to find out why 9 Showtime did not play well MOV & MP4 files.
Now that I have another program that does play those formats very well, & since 9 Showtime is an old not supported program, I think that there is no reason to continue with this Post.

    Tell me what you think.
