NeroROMBurn Trial download is Trojan.ADH.2

I installed NeroBurnROM trial and SAV Enterprise (Symantec Anti Virus) says it stopped the Trojan Virus called "Trojan.ADH.2"!!!

Also; I'm getting pop-ups now about system tune-up using an AVG utility. I don't have (or want) AVG.

Are you infected? Is this a false positive? Is this a known issue?

  • Brad,

I accidentally got AVG junk a while back with some free software. I was able to uninstall it from Control Panel at the time. Although there have been many complaints about Nero including adware in their installation packages, I don't remember the Trojan thing.

Avoid the "adware" when installing Nero products

The Trial is limited to 100MB. This was not mentioned on the download.

A limit is understandable, but it's aggravating that you didn't warn me.

  • The trial is for testing. Anything you can do with a large file you can also do with a small file to check it out.

The Nero downloads are checked for viruses so I'm surprised that you saw one. I think it's been reported maybe once or twice previously.

As you could see in the other thread you posted in, you can avoid the AVG installation by doing a custom installation. I'm going by memory here, but I did one of the installations without doing the custom installation. AVG wasn't listed in control panel- it was listed as some program whose name started with an "S" in Programs and Features. If you don't find something like that, try this-

run msconfig.exe. Look in the Startup and Services tabs to see if there is anything AVG related. If so, disable it. reboot.

  • Hi,

    Thanks for your helpful advice.

I liken it to eating at a Sushi resturant with dirty bathrooms. If they can't even respect us paying or potentially paying customers enough that they think it's OK to sneek in "other software" behind our backs then I'll simply exercise other choices.

As with the 100MB limit; my issue is that they didn't say so up front. Wasting my time.

Frankly; I would have simply bought it up-front but I'm having trouble burning a ROM (or bootable USB) with the free Microsoft burning software (the ISO is also from Microsoft). So I thought I'd try NERO first. I have a purchased version of Nero 10 but I prefer having the latest.

I was confused about all these different versions so I thought I'd simply use the trial while awaiting their answer on what version(s) will burn bootable DVD and USB Thumbdrive from a downloaded ISO file.

So; not only did I waste my time, but I got infected AND got unwanted AVG software (that likely conflicts with our Corporate Symantec software). Sigh.

There are other choices. Hopefully the competion has more respect for their user.

    Cheers

  • Maybe you should tell Adobe to stop sneaking in Google with every update to the ADF. It's not an unusual thing. Prior to AVG, Nero included the Asknet toolbar, the same way. You should have seen that when you installed v10. Everytime I download and install anything free, I have to be careful to get rid of the 4 or 5 free things unrelated to the product I'm downloading. I guess I'm saying it's a fact of life these days. There's no reason I can see that you can't remedy the AVG pop-ups.

I still don't see any reason to not buy v14. You get a deep discount by using your v10 as a trade-in. As I understand it though, if you do that, then don't uninstall and reinstall v10 because I don't think you'll be able to activate the v10 patents. On the other hand, it seems like v10 is doing everything you need.

If that virus actually came from the Nero download, you should send an e-mail to tech support about it. I had Norton System Premier before I installed Norton 360. One of the things I griped about the former is that it didn't readily tell me about viruses it had stopped and quarantined. Sometimes, it would be days afterwards. Norton 360 lets you know right now.

  • Adobe is free - something as common as Chrome is expected. Besides, Google Chrome is something I'd want.

This AVG pop-up is now not uninstalling. Like an infection that won't respond to normal anti-biotics. Thanks guys.

I'm wiping this machine next week so I'm not overly miffed but wow! That you continue justifying this - you are speaking for Nero right? Doesn't bode well for what else you may do.

Now you're saying the version 10 that I *purchased* is not re-installable??? Isn't that kind of a rip-off?

Anyway ... moving on to the competition. Thanks for listening. It would be nice if you conveyed this one ex-customer's sentaments about their practices to your management.

These practices, I must say, have converted this long time user to be an outspoken critic.

  • I'm not a Nero employee. I'm strictly a volunteer who's been in the forum on a daily basis for almost 6 years.

I provided some hints on how to get rid of the AVG pop-ups. In a worst case scenario, you could uninstall it by registry edits.

I didn't say anything about v10 not being reinstallable. All I said is that, if you use v10 as a trade-in to get the discount on v14, you probably won't be able to activate the v10 patents if you uninstall and reinstall v10. If you don't uninstall it, then I think the patents remain active. On the other hand, if you buy v14, I don't see any need for v10.

I should also say I recommend buying v14 Platinum. You get the Nero Blu-ray player and other goodies.

I recommend that you send an e-mail to tech support about the virus and the inclusion of AVG even though I'm sure they're aware of the latter being an issue. You're not the first to complain and I am sympathetic with that.

  • Hi - volunteer. I thought you were official Nero, sorry to harsh on you for their shortcomings.

"don't uninstall and reinstall v10 because I don't think you'll be able to activate the v10 patents." - I interpreted that to mean that Nero 10 won't reinstall. Did you mean re-installing a v10 Trial?

Maybe you can answer my initial question. What are the options for burning DVD and USB Thumbdrive from an ISO? I can't think of any ISO files that are under 100MB so trials are out. I submitted a question to their marketing; no answer from them yet.

I want to know if the BurnROM is the only option? I'd rather get a comprehensive product since I sometimes have to do other things the Ultimate offers (like reducing video files). .... just in case "the competition" has their own set of problems and I decide to forgive Nero.

  • Read what I said very carefully. You can uninstall and reinstall v10 as many times as you want in your current situation and activate the patents.

However, at the upgrade website page, it will ask you if you have an older version that you might want to use to get a deep discount on v14, either standard or Platinum. If you specify your v10 to get the discount, then you're basically trading it in, like buying a new car using your old one for trade in. If you want to keep v10 installed, with its patents activated, in parallel with v14, don't uninstall and reinstall v10. If you uninstall/reinstall v10 under those circumstances, you won't be able to activate the v10 patents because of the trade-in.

Normally, to burn a ISO, one would just right click on it and Burning Rom would open and let you burn it. It's just an image file. You could burn it to DVD or a thumb drive, if there's enough space.

I've already recommended Platinum. It's the cheapest way to go if you want a comprehensive product.
