No Preview Video in Nero Video Capture

Im using Nero 2015 Classic and recently installed it on a computer running Windows 8.1 with a GeForce GTX 1050 Ti Video Card.

In Nero Video, when I try to capture video from an AVC Compliant DV Device, I get no picture in the viewer screen. Interestingly, the video device properties icon is dimmed and doesn't allow any selection.

I've tried using the NVidia Control Panel settings as posted in other threads, but I don't get the option to choose the video processor as they say on other threads. I'm using the latest version of the Nvidia application, as well as the latest updates for Nero.

I suspect the problem is the video processor, but how do I fix this? I can't find a way to access the settings for this.

Thanks.

  • Hi Greg-

Does it show your device when you select the Capture from Camera or TV option? What is the model of your device?

  • Yes, it shows up as "AVC Compliant DV Device"
I'm trying to capture from a Canopus ADVC-500 advanced DV Converter. It connects to the computer via a firewire cable and interface card.

If I turn the unit off, you get the notification through windows of it being disconnected. And it disappears from the listing in the Nero capture device window. When I turn it on, it is instantly recognized, and shows back up in the Capture Device window. So I know the system is seeing it. Just no video displayed in the window.

I tried it with a camcorder also, with the same results - recognizes the device, but I get no video in the capture window.

  • I was trying to look up information on your device. To look at the manual, gleekplay want's a credit card number for that privilege. Not going to happen.

From some reviews, the specs seem to show there are two different Firewire connections. One for audio and one for video. I assume you're connected to the video output.

There's also a 4-wire Firewire and 6-wire Firewire connection. I have no idea what each is for since I can't get the manual.

Perhaps, you'll either enlighten me or cross check in the manual to make sure your connector/connection are correct.

Do you have the device making an output when you try to capture?

Can you set your device to VCR mode? That's required for some visuals.

  • While I don't have the manual for the ADVC-500, I do have a manual for the ADVC-700, which is a slightly updated model, but the two units are very similar. I've posted the manual for it here: http://www.ctotf.org/CCJ-BPA/ADVC-700....

I'm using the 6-wire Firewire connection DV1 in the manual. I'm sure the connections are correct because I used this unit for years successfully with my old computer, an AMD Phenom II based unit running Windows 7 and Nero 2011. I haven't changed anything with the unit except plug the computer end of the firewire cord into the new computer (An intel i7-6700T based processor on an ASUS Maximus VIII motherboard)

I'm pretty sure the unit is generating an output, as the audio level led's are lighting up when it is running, and the computer is recognizing the unit as connected when I turn it on, so something is getting through the cable to the computer. Everything on the Canopus unit looks the way it used to when it was working successfully.

Just to try it, I uninstalled Nero 2015, and installed the older Nero 2011 but the same thng happens. I see the unit being recognized by the computer and showing up in the capture device window correctly. The video options icon is dimmed. But nothing shows up in the capture window.

So I'm thinking something is going on with this motherboard or graphics card that is affecting both versions of Nero?

  • I don't want to ask a bunch of silly questions since you have lots of experience with the device. That said, I assume you have the mode selected to Analog- DV and that the display shows Video when you running the video.

I don't know which VIII motherboard you have so I can't look to see how many 1394 ports it has and if they're four or six wire connections. Perhaps you can look at the manual for more information. Obviously, there's something goofy because you're getting audio and no video.

  • I'm hoping I have it figured out - apparently a bad firewire cable where the video is not getting through although the canopus unit is recognized. I must have damaged something in the changeover and upgrade.

To find it, I moved everything back to the old computer with the old software, and it still didn't work. Then I started changing out components one by one. It worked again when I changed the firewire cable. I'm now in the process of moving it all back into the new computer again to see what happens.

Thanks for staying with me until this thing is figured out. It is much appreciated.

  • Success! The cable appears to have been the problem. I moved everything to the new computer, installed Nero 2015 and everything works as it should.

    Again, thanks for your help.
