Picture in Picture Overlay help

Hello,

I'm trying to insert a video of me talking in front of a blue wall on the upper right corner of my main video as a p.i.p. The problem I'm having is I can't get the video to the right image size. If I resize the video, I appear to small in the corner. I tried cropping the blue wall out using another software but when I dropped the new cropped video into nero, the video replaced the blue wall with black and the video image size is still too wide. Is there way to make the crop out the blue wall and have the video image size just be less wide? Thank You very much.

  • When you edited in the other software, there may not have been a transparency option so the background of the inserted video is solid. If possible with the other program, set the transparency to 100 before inserting it into Nero.

I'm wondering if all you need to do is scale your video to get the results you want.

  • Have you tried to apply the chroma key effect onto the video with the black background in Nero Video?

(Can't test it right now because of updating to Windows 8.1 Pro)

  • I kind of think that the first paragraph of my response was poor. I thought of that after I shut down. It may be he can correct the transparency (opacity) within Nero.

  • Right now I'm trying to use recoder to trim the video image size and see if that will work the way I want. I am not familiar with the chroma key effect but will look into learning that next. Thanks for the responses. I appreciate. I will let you guys know how it turns out and maybe I will have more questions. Take care

  • If you import a video into Nero Video and double click on it, the trim window will open. You can trim the ends of the video. Does that help?

  • I didn't want to trim the length of the video in terms of minutes. I wanted to crop the image size of the video. I was able to use another software program to crop and then change the resolution (image size) to get rid of the extraneous black on both sides of me. I had to use another software program because I couldn't see the apply button after I cropped in nero recode. So now I have my pip video the right size so that is cool. The problem I have now is adjusting the length (in seconds) for each picture I import into the timeline. In Movie Maker, I adjusted them to the exact seconds I wanted such as 2.75. In Nero, I can only go to 2.29 and then it jumps to 3. I can't get it to the exact seconds and that is important because I have all my audio files finished so my audio will not match the video. Any suggestions? It is weird that I am not seeing the same screens on my nero install as what I see in the online video tutorials. Maybe that has something to do with it that I have a faulty install. Can you change the length of the slides you import into Nero Video to the exact seconds such as 2.75? Thanks

  • Thanks Omega Tester. So in Nero as apposed to movie maker, we can only use whole numbers for seconds? I'm a newbie with the editing so I'm learning on the go. I am not sure how the frames play a role in this editing process. I will try and do some research. Do you have any suggestions on how I can match the time each slide plays in Movie Maker as the time each side plays in Nero because I don't want to have to redo all my audio files to match the length of the slides In Nero. Thanks a lot!

    David:
You are apparently working on a 30 frame per second project. So, each frame is 0.0333... seconds.

Sorry, I missed your other question.
The timeline in the Nero Video Editor has a resolution of 1 frame; I assume that's true in Movie Maker too, since the videos only have discrete frames.

  • If you can't see the Apply button, you probably have to personalize your display. There was an issue with this type of problem in menus in v12. Although personalizing the display works for me, I objected to it and sent an e-mail to tech support about it. They sent it to the developers but I guess they haven't done anything with it yet.

  • Thanks for trying to help me. I understand that each still image is a frame. Each consecutive still image needs to be adjusted in seconds to reflect how long that particular still image stays on the screen. That is how Movie Maker works. You can adjust each frame to customized seconds but there is no place to indicate number of frames. You can also include the seconds in fractions so if your audio file that you want to match to a series of consecutive frames is 56.61 seconds you can adjust each frame so it matches perfectly with the audio file. I don't have the same control in Nero to decide how long each frame should be if I can only put whole number seconds for length. I think the 30 frames per second dictates the capability of how fast it will read each frame but if you want a frame to stay on the screen for a specific amount of time to match the audio you are saying, how can each frame be .0333 Besides, I can't put decimals in the the duration windows. (either for seconds or for frames)

I replied to this earlier and, for some reason, the post was lost.

Did you try changing the display to make it possible to see the Recode Apply button.

In Nero Video, Advanced Editing, you can set the duration of an image to include sub-seconds. Zoom the timeline to the maximum. Grab the end of an image and move it to the desired duration.

If you want all images to be the same duration, set the duration of the first image as above. Select all images using standard Windows Explorer key strokes. Right click and select "set duration". Do nothing except click on OK in the pop-up screen. All images will be the same duration as the first.

  • Wither,

I didn't know where to change the display. The only options available to me are tools which has sub-menus erase disk and disk info and options which has sub-menus general, input, output, profiles, performance and disk. I played around with anything I thought was relevant but no Apply button. Can you tell me what steps you take to change the display to toggle the apply button. Also thank you very much for explaining how to get more control with sub-seconds. That will work for me although it will be alot more time consuming if I can't just type the sub-seconds. Is there anywhere to see the actual sub-seconds displayed to edit or the only way is to zoom 100% and drag the frame. Thanks so much for your help. I really appreciate it. I am done with the video and I need to market it for money but am fixated with this P.I.P option so I need to learn another editor to duplicate what I've already finished in Movie Maker.

    David:

I think I have confused things above instead of clarifying them. So, I'll try again.

I think the decimal parts of a second that you are seeing in WMM are an "illusion." I have made a WMM project containing 4 photos, each with a desired duration of 50 milliseconds. So, the resulting video should be 200 milliseconds long. And, that's what is displayed within WMM. However, since the video frames (not pictures) each have a duration of ~0.0333 seconds, there is no way to actually create a movie with a photo lasting 50 msec - the duration of the photo is forced to be truncated to ~33.3 msec or extended to be ~66.6 msec.

After making the WMM project, I saved the WMM project file and a .WMV video from WMM. Then, I started Nero 2014 Video, opened the WMM project and then imported the .WMV file. See the images below which I hope make clear the "resolution" difficulties when trying to specify "sub-seconds" within the photo duration specification.

Here's an example of setting the duration of audio clips in Nero Video:

  • As far as I know, you're not supposed to be able to have a image whose duration is less than 1 second.

David- I didn't look to see which operating system you have. In Win 7 (and I suppose Win 8), click on the desktop and right click. Select Personalize. Select Display. There should be three options. Select Smallest. Does this help?

On the other hand, there is no Apply button. There is an OK button.

I see Mister_M hasn't returned with the Chroma Key, etc. So, here's a few images showing cropping in Nero Video, using the Chroma Key effect in Nero Video, and cropping in Nero Recode.

Hopefully, they will be clear, but if not, you know what to do.
