Problems capturing VHS video with Nero12 using external capture device.

I'll try to make this brief. I had Nero11 and had a couple issues so I upgraded to Nero12 in the event it was just related to the version, but no. Whenever I capture video through either of two capture devices (Canopus A/D box, or my Mini-DV camcorder) I seem to get the same issue. It captures for however long I set it, but then the resulting file has the beginning and sometimes the ending clipped off. I'm not talking about a few mins. I recorded for 3 hrs and the resulting file had little more than half the video that was captured. I had Windows 7, now have Windows 8.1, my hard disk has plenty of space, my processor is not loaded, no dropped frames, it LOOKS like its working fine but when I open the file it begins somewhere into the original video. This is making me crazy. Any ideas what to try? Anyone had this happen before?

  • Is v12 up to date as indicated by running the check for updates from the Nero Control Center?

Also, are you capturing to your hard drive or capturing using Import, Capture?

  • Wither, WOW.. no it was not up to date.. I'm updating it now and will try it again. I captured to my hard disk from an external AV/DV converter (Canopus) small box. It has a small silver button to switch back and forth from analog to digital inputs. I have a VHS VCR connected to it and then from the canopus box it goes firewire into my PC.

  • My references to capturing were for Nero Video. That's what I assume you are using. You can capture to your hard drive by selecting Capture from Camera or TV when you open NV or you can capture from within Nero Video by selecting the Import button.

I'm not really up on these connections since I don't have a camera or a VHS box connected to my computer. The latter is 60 feet from my computer. Let's see what happens when you get done updating.

I really need to clean up my system. Nero Video is taking forever to load.

  • I’m frustrated
I tried capturing again and it failed again. I set Nero12 to record for 1 hr. Once it stopped. I played back the recording and it was about 20 mins into the video and then cut off everything 10 mins or so after that. So the recording of 1 hr was about ten mins or so long... a seemingly random 10 minute section it decided to keep and threw away the beginning and ending. I have NO idea what could possibly cause this and its killing me. I have LOTS of hard disk space and my computer was doing NOTHING else.. no updates, no scans, just this. It's an i5 with Win 8.1 and 4gb ram 1tb hdd.

** It was Nero Video Import **

  • It would lead to far, explaining possible reasons. I assume, it's a syncronisation problem because your configuration with this converter does not allow control of the player by the SW. I had this problem many years ago when I was using such a converter box for download videos from tapes (VHS, Video 8), I think with Nero 7 on a W2k system.

Just to say, if this would be the problem, there will be no solution because the SW of the box (I think it runs under XP) may not be compatible with Windows 8. In this case you should look at first for a SW and/or firmware update for this box.

Anyway, to locate your problem, we must analize from the base on, means if regular capturing is running well. Make the following test with your DV-Mini camcorder (which model is it ?):
    - connect the camcorder (with inserted tape) directly via firewire (IEEE 1394) to the PC
    - open NeroVideo, check the recording format options for DVD-Video. under "More", each option should be set to "Automatic" except "Quality", which should be set to "High Quality"
    - choose "Record to disk"
-- Questions: a) How long does it need for opening the the Window ?
    ----------------- b) Which device is shown ?
----------------- c) change mode to "Userdefined", if not set as default. How long does
-------------------- it need until you have access to the options (should be not more -------------------------- then 2 seconds) ?
----------------- d) check the functionality of the control button (all must be colored).
--------------------- How long does it need until you get a reaction by the system ?
    - define the target file, choose a start point, set to "Pause" and start recording. Record 30 minutes in minimum.
    - after stop, wait until the analize process is completed.
-- Question (very important): How long does this process last ?
    - Check the result. There can be a little loss of frames at the beginning and an overflow from some seconds at the end, but there should be no other lacks, iike "black holes" of picture and audio, or any distortion of the picture. If so, let me know exactly.

Let me know the complete result of this test. And I must be sure, that you followed exactly my instructions !

My experience with recording from tape sources:
Because I don't have a firewire connection on my laptop, where Nero 12.5 is installed, I must record under Nero 8 resp. 10 which are paralell installed on a laptop under Vista. The player devices are a Panasonic semiprofessional DV-Recorder and a Digital 8 camcorder. Controlling via the buttons runs only well for the Digital 8. With the DVD-Recorder I have delays between 3 and 10 seconds and exact recording is nearly impossible. So I copy the sources at first to the Digital 8 and make the capturing from there under Nero 8 resp. I use a ten years old MyDVD V6, which is installed on a W2k workstation. Although I have there only a 800 MHz processor, nearly frame exact (!) recording is possible.

  • Thank you for the reply! I checked for software or firmware from the company site and there appears to be none. The DV Camcorder I have is a Canon Elura 100.

I ran into some difficulties following directions. Here is what I found...

After your instructions to "Record to Disk", it required a DVD-R blank to be inserted to proceed. I did so. The window took only 2-3 second to open.

    a) How long does it need for opening the the Window ? 2-3 seconds
    b) Which device is shown ? Canon DV Device
    c) change mode to "Userdefined", if not set as default. (NO OPTION FOR USER DEFINED)
    d) check the functionality of the control button (all must be colored) (I SEE NO BUTTON LABLED CONTROL, DO YOU MEAN THE STOP, RECORD, FORWARD, etc buttons?).
How long does it need until you get a reaction by the system ?-- Had to activate patent feature, then 10 seconds to initialize, then ready to record.
Chose save as and named the file, clicked play, then pause, then record.
Almost immediately (about 1 second), it produced an error that said "Unable to create the disk structure. Recording process failed. An error log was created that can be very helpful in diagnosing problems. Would you like to save it?" I chose YES. I pasted the log below. I could not progress further than this point.

  • I think you should send an e-mail to tech support on this one.

First it says the disc is unformatted. Seems that has come up before.

Then it says the the project size is 143 mb but it's estimated duration is 0.

Then it says the DVDVFR Edit Disc service is unavailable.

Let us know what tech support has to say.

  • Hi Michael,
Sorry for my late answer, was very busy. And sorry again, my instruction was wrong due to translation. I meant "Record from camera or TV" to HDD. So forget these previous trials and the log above, which has, from my view, nothing to do with your problem.

Please try again with option and settings as shown in the screenshot.

Although I assume, that you has done it on this way before, it would be helpful to create a new log from the capturing step and then from the editing step, means after importing this captured file into a DVD project (and save both !). This, to find out where the loss of video parts happened.

Again, I'm sorry that I caused you unnecessary effort.

  • Ok, we are getting a little closer. Thanks for your reply. Here are my results...

-- Questions: a) How long does it need for opening the the Window ? 1-2 seconds

----------------- b) Which device is shown ? Canon DV Device

----------------- c) change mode to "Userdefined", if not set as default. (Switched as the picture indicated.) How long does it need until you have access to the options (should be not more -- then 2 seconds) ALMOST INSTANTLY

----------------- d) check the functionality of the control button (all must be colored) (I SEE NO BUTTON LABLED CONTROL, DO YOU MEAN THE STOP, RECORD, FORWARD, etc buttons?). I CAN PLAY, FORWARD, REWIND, ETC FROM THE MONITOR SCREEN AND CONTROL MY DV CAMERA.

--------------------- How long does it need until you get a reaction by the system ? INSTANTLY.

    - define the target file, choose a start point, set to "Pause" and start recording. Record 30 minutes in minimum.
    - after stop, wait until the analize process is completed.
    - Question (very important): How long does this process last ? 3 SECONDS

    - Check the result. There can be a little loss of frames at the beginning and an overflow from some seconds at the end, but there should be no other lacks, iike "black holes" of picture and audio, or any distortion of the picture. If so, let me know exactly. IT CAPTURED THE FULL RECORDING TO THE FILE, HOWEVER AT 5 MINS INTO THE RECORDING THE IMAGE AND AUDIO FROZE INSIDE NERO VIDEO BUT IT CONTINUED CAPTURING SUCCESSFULLY.

I WOULD LIKE TO ADD THAT NOTHING WOULD PLAY BACK THE VIDEO, ONLY THE AUDIO. I HAD TO DOWNLOAD VLC IN ORDER TO PLAY BACK THE VIDEO. THE QUALITY WAS POOR, ALL MOVEMENT MADE JAGGED LINES. I FINALLY GOT KWIK MEDIA TO FIND AND PLAY IT AND QUALITY LOOKED MUCH BETTER.

  • Thanks for your informations. At first to clarify. Under "userdefined" I meant "Custom capture template". As your screenshot shows, there the settings seem to be ok, but take a look with "Configure". The settings for Quality must be "High quality" (bitrate 8k/sec), not "Fit to disk". If not, you must try again. Also set "Speed" to 100.
If this has no influence on quality (I assume, you do not mean interrupts), than it must have something to do with the streaming from the box.
    - Is this box new or was it installed before on another system and were running the correctly ?
    - Did you get SW with the box and have you installed it ? (I got with my box some years ago, was installed under XP)
    - If so, are the possibilities to configure, change settings etc. ? I ask because my box delivered MPEG-2 as well as AVI and the quality of AVI was much better this time. No possibility to take influence because converting was hard-coded in the box.
But as I have seen in the web, this should be better with your Canopus ADVC-100, which is replaced by ADVC-110 meanwhile. So there should be no problem.

Remains controling. I assume, you must control manually with the remote control of your VHS-Recorder because this type has no iLink (firewire, IEEE 1394) connection. Means you can only start/stop capturing with the resp. button in NV. All other buttons are greyed out. Am I correct ?

But this should work properly. So I have no idea what the reason for your problem could be. I am a little bit confused that you say, quality in KwickMedia (KM) is much better (btw., you don't have the last update of Nero 12. This would be Nero 12.5 and KwickMedia is renamed to MediaHome. But don't install, it would not solve your problem). Because KM use NV functionality with the default settings for the Recording Format Options, I only see the problem in incorrect presettings.

So please try again with the settings shown below

When playback shows a black screen in preview during capturing, it is "normal" because "visualisation" is interrupted, if there is not enough performance available to prepare the realtime preview.
