Reusing chapter information from multiple DVD projects into one Blu-Ray project.

I have participated in a TV program - in 10 episodes. I authored 12 DVDs (including 'bonus' material) with Nero 2016. I used one project per episode, then created a derived project with chapters added for the episode, then created the menus.

That all worked fine (although it was a pain not to be able to keep the intermediate files, everytime I made a typo I had to re-render the entire project. Not fun.)

I now want to reuse these projects, to create two BD-50 Blu-Rays. The source material is already in Full-HD .m2ts format (H.264 compression), but I want to reuse the chapter information.

However, there does not seem to be an export option that will retain chapter information. I have tried workarounds (create a Blu-Ray anologous to the original, then mount the image, then reimport, but this does not seems to be possible).

So, my question:

- can I either merge the chapterized video projects to one BluRay project?
- or: can I export the source material to some kind of container (.mkv? .mp4?) first (preferably without recompression) and then import them in a 'master' project?

All help appreciated! Of course, a patch to the program that would allow import and export of chapter markers would solve my problem much more graciously.

  • Where the heck is all the other volunteers? My time is very limited these days and I've left this alone because of it.

For starters, I don't understand why you had to "re-render" the entire project because of a typo. You can keep intermediate files by selecting Save or Save As. You can then reopen that file in Nero Video without losing your edits.

If you export a project with chapters to file, the chapter markers should be retained. If you import a number of those files into a Blu-ray disc project, the only question is how the chapters are handled in the menu (if you want a menu). Perhaps you are referring to Titles, rather than chapters.

  • Thank you Mr or Ms Wither. I have used the following editing flow:

    - import .ts file (MPEG-2 Transport Stream, containing AC3 audio and H.264 encoding) from Satellite recording
    - edit file to remove unwanted parts (commercials, part of previous program, post program) using Nero Video tools
    - add various parts to the timeline
    - add chapter markers

I tried to export the video to MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 using various profiles (BluRay, DVD etc.), but when I then start a new (DVD or BluRay) project and import the file, chapter information does not show up, not even when I re-edit, whereas if I do not export directly, but continue on with 'Create a Disc -> DVD' (or BluRay) the chaptermarkers are there and can be renamed.

As the files are big, this was not a big problem for a DVD, as the edited file was the main title, so to speak, so I could use it as the starting point for the DVD and add smaller titles/chapters later as it would require less effort to add chapters manually where needed (only one or two per additional file). However, on BluRay I want to have multiple titles, each with their individual chapter menu and I cannot seem to make that happen as the bigger files lose their chaptermarkers after export.

As for keeping the intermediate files, I do not see that option, nor does that seem to happen if I save the project. You are right that in the project the edits/chaptermarkers are preserved, but the intermediate files are definitely gone.

  • I'm going by memory here but I don't think the chapters are embedded until you go to the menu editing screen (you have at that point identified the type of disc project it is). If you do that and then either export from there or "go back", they should be there. If I had more time I would check it out.

I'm not sure what you're referring to as intermediate files. You can save a project as many times as you want to while you're working on it. If you want to save the project at intermediate points in the editing phase, you can give each phase a different name.

  • ... which is exactly the problem - I would like to export the file in the right format, chaptermarkers included, so I can import that file in a new project and *then* create a disc with the file. As for intermediate files, yes, I can save the projectfile which contains the chaptermarkers, but when Nero Vision generates the final disc, the transcoded files are not kept at the end of the process. There also is not a step that would pre-generate all intermediate *video* files - which would save a lot of work if I only want to change/edit/replace one of the titles on the disc.

  • I'm still not quite understanding.

In regards to the transcoded files, you can burn the project to your hard drive instead of a disc. You can then import the stream files from the resulting BDMV (or BDAV) folder back into Nero Video. Of course, you lose the menu and the chapter information..

  • I actually tried that, to see if it would preserve chapter information - and as you say it does not do that. Actually, I could not even import the Blu-Ray written to the hard drive, nor the imported image mounted to a virtual drive.

    Let me recap:
    - I have source material captured in 1920x1080i25
    - In Nero Video, I use this material to create a trimmed, edited, video
    - I add chapter information to this material

Now, I would like to do the following:
    - export this material in some format that allows me to retain chapter information and reuse that later in multiple disc projects, both DVD and Blu-Ray, not a single, follow-on project.

This does not seem to be possible. The chapter information is in the project (.nvc) file, not the video file and cannot be exported to some other, separate chapter information format (.edl or even XML) that can later be imported.

This means that I can either move forward(as I have for the DVD versions containing the material) and create one disc with title/chapter information, or that I would have to do every editing of the various titles on the Blu-Ray from within one Nero project. I then could have proceeded by creating new projects deleting the unwanted titles for the various DVDs, thus retaining the information that way, but that retaining chapter information was such a difficult task was not obvious to me.

  • I just tried a small project in which I added chapters to a video and went to the menu editing screen. I then clicked on back and exported the project to .m2ts. I restarted Nero Video and imported that file. The chapters were not there. As a result, you would have to Save As in the menu editing screen. The only problem with that is you can only open one project at a time to a new project.

I also exported the same video with chapters directly from the Content screen to .m2ts and the chapters were not retained.

This is a good refresher for me since we haven't gotten into chapters for quite some time. Unfortunately, it doesn't help you.

I'm thinking that Recode might be helpful but I don't have time this morning to investigate.

    Ok, a little experiment:

    - created Nero Image (.nrg) file with video file including chapters
    - mounted this image to a virtual bluray-drive
    - used Nero Recode to create a .mkv file
    - and yes, it did have the chapters embedded in it!

    However:
    - started Nero Video 2016
    - created a BluRay project
    - imported .mkv file
    - alas, no chapters are processed or show up

  • Wither 1,

Here's an example outlining a way for you to verify Ronald's issue.

    1. Create a Blu-ray project with chapters and write to a hard drive folder.
    2. Import the resulting structure into Nero 2016 Recode and export as an MKV.
    3. Import the MKV into handbrake:

    4. Import the same MKV into a new Blu-ray project in Nero 2016 Video:

    • So, what you're saying is ... when it comes to handling Chapter markers (and also subtitles if it comes to that) ... Nero software is "a load of rubbish".
    • Well, no. I'd say that there is definitely room for improvement - what I want is doable with Nero, but it requires a certain top-down mindset that I had not expected.

    Dear Ronald,

Thank you for your feedback, we have forwarded it to the R&D department.

Unfortunately we canʼt provide you a tool to merge NVC files, canʼt provide you with the description of the NVC format and currently do not allow the import of chapter markers.

Please share your thoughts on forum.nero.com which is often visited by our developers and managers, so that this can be discussed by the community and the developers as a feature request.

Again, this does not answer the question and could have been your answer within a day.

The source material is all 1080i25, as previously stated. So there will be no loss of quality reusing the material in a BluRay. Almost no re-encoding necessary. For the DVDs, these were transcode to 526i without problems and with Excellent Quality.

However, my question is simple: I have edited 10 files, each of about 2 hours in length, and added several chapter markers to each of these files.

This editing information cannot be exported currently through Nero Video. I can export the main title, but this will not retain the chapter markers. Re-adding those markers for 10 files is a huge undertaking.which I would like to avoid.

    So, to reiterate:

    Please provide either:

    - a tool to merge two .NVC files
    - a description of the .NVC format, so I can write my own tool.
    - allow import of chapter markers, for example through the .mkv format

    Thank you.

    Dear Mr. van Loon,

Thank you for contacting the Nero Support Team.

We would like to offer technical insight on this question:

The DVD data can be burned on a Blu-ray as a data disc, but no Player will be able to Play them. In this case it can only be used for data backup reasons.

A DVD-Video (DVD5) will typically contain 2 hours of MPEG-2 movie Content using the best Quality.
A Blu-ray Video (single layer) can contain MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 coded Content using its own structure but the duration is related to the used Bitrate.

From a DVD-Video only the main-title/title can be used to burn it on a Blu-ray Video disc. (the disc menus cannot be adopted/copied)
If more than one title will be used at the Blu-ray Project, the Quality of the movie will be reduced.

A NVC Project file cannot be imported at a new Project. The movie has to be exported to a new video file which can be imported on a new Project.

That, unfortunately, doesn't answer the question. This would work for one disc, but does not work for my scenario.

I have authored 12 DVD(9)s, and I want to combine the (source) content of 6 of these DVDs into one BluRay (DL) (or three depending on available space and resulting quality). While I could use your solution to create one Blu-Ray out of one DVD project, I cannot reuse the other DVD-projects or import them to create one master project. I could have created one master project and deleted the unwanted content and that would have worked, but I cannot do it the other way around.

Worse, there is no solution (that I have found) that would export the chapter information from the project to be imported in a new project, or an export format that would retain the chapter information to be imported later. Even if the source material contains chapter information (for example, an MKV format or MP4 format file) that information is ignored when imported.

So, the chapter marker information import and export facilities of Nero Video need to be improved. As a quick workaround, a tool that would merge two Nero Video projects into one, would also work, as I can then merge them into one big project, delete what I do not need, and retain the chapter information.

If this functionality cannot easily be added, would you be willing to share the information on how the .nvc file is structured? I can then write the tool myself. Your quick response is appreciated.

    Dear Ronald,

    We appreciate your continued patience.

You have indicated that ʼExportʼ function was used to target a Blu-ray compatible format.
Please do not use the ʼExportʼ function for this purpose, but instead use the disc format button
to change the layout to bluray.

    Hope this helps!

    Dear reader,

I have recently undertaken a large project, where I had 10 television programs of about 1.5 hr each, where I had to remove commercials etc and then create a BluRay (or two) for those that could handle FullHD and 12 DVDs (some bonusmaterial was included) for those that couldn't.

What I did was create one Nero 2016 project for each video file. I then trimmed the video, removed commercials and added chapter information.

Just before branching out to the final disc, I saved a copy of the project. For the DVD, I then proceeded to create a menu, add some bonus material and created the Disc Image.

    This worked fine.

However, for Blu-Ray, I wanted to go back to the saved project file, then export the file including chapters to a suitable format for BluRay, then create a new project, import the file exported in the previous steps and a bunch of others create similarly and have menus created for each file including the chapter information.

However, this does not work. None of the individual export functions include the chapter information. Not even MPEG-4, which does support it.

There also seems not to be an option to export the chapter information separately, and import it later.

Can you help me to accomplish this? I rather not have to go and recreate 150+ chapter markers by hand.

Does Nero Recode preserve chapter information that I could use later in Nero Video?

    Thanks for any help!
