Reading from old to new.

How can I change the order of articles from older to newer? Right now, I'm reading stories in reverse-chronological order.

I would really like to see this configurable on a per-feed basis.

This will be a configurable option in a set of larger custom views I'm planning to build later this summer. It's a toss-up between building mobile and building this, but it's next on the priority list. I need to figure out what a good UI would be for this, since it's a bit more work to find the oldest unread story.

FYI, you can do it for any feed with this nifty tool: http://rss-tools.overgrid.com/?page_id=6

I just signed up to newsblur and opted to go Premium (at $36/year) because I hate the new Google reader re-design.

Then I discovered I can't sort in regular, chronological, oldest first order.

Honestly, this is a deal breaker for me.

I simply cannot use it without this feature.

I'm a coder, so I'm gonna take a peek at the source code on github.

Even with a speed decrease, I'd love to see it on a per-feed basis. Webcomics make no sense on a newest-to-oldest basis and they are one of the best reasons to use RSS. Thanks for the update!

@Rob That's an interesting idea. I have built auto-paging using the `n` key (or by clicking Next Unread), but that only works if the stories are all read. It's effectively looking for the first unread story. But I could invert the logic and make a new button that looks for the Oldest unread, which wouldn't be so difficult (check that X number of unread stories are loaded before deciding that you've found the oldest unread). Now, if I could find somewhere to put that button without cluttering up the interface, you'd be golden. The implementation details for that aren't so hard. I'm thinking about building it right this moment.

And done. Use the `m` key to find the oldest story. It's a stop-gap, and I agree that there's a better way, but this is a *pretty* good solution.

Also, let me know if you'd like a loader or some indicator that it's working. In other words, I know I need to build it, but I don't know what it should look like, so I need at least a couple of you to say, yes, you would like an indicator.

The 'find oldest unread story' key would be a fine solution for me. Is this currently deployed on the site? It doesn't seem to work for me (FF9) but I'm new to newsblur (I've yet to sign up, so this is the site as first seen)

It certainly does work when logged in. And I just checked, it works when logged out, as well. You have to have a site open, first, but then it'll keep loading pages until it finds the oldest unread story (it counts the number of unread stories it sees vs. the unread count on the page ... so it is possible that the two are off by 1 and you end up not finding the oldest story, but it's an edge case.)

9 months and it's a no go?
I was happy to switch from G-reader earlier today, but this seems like the most basic feature possible which is missing. Why would I want to read from new to old?

Seems this is pretty popular. I'm working on an enormous social branch, so all other feature work is on hold until I get it out the door. Should be no more than a week or two before the developer build is ready for some beta testing. This will be high on the list after that.

That was in reference to the developer build for the social branch, which did indeed launch about 2 months ago. (Sign up for an invite here: http://dev.newsblur.com)

This is slated for this Summer.

I'm on the same boat. Just discovered this service from my blog stats (one of my readers seems to be using it), and I'm really, really impressed by it, but without a way to read older posts first this becomes almost useless to me.

I noticed the feature "Open the oldest unread story" on the options, but because the posts themselves continue on inverse chronological order, trying to open feeds with a lot of images is an exercise in frustration as the oldest unread story scrolls down for minutes while images load and increase the length of the page.

This is pretty much the only feature I absolutely need before taking the plunge and paying for Premium service.

I imagine the challenge is because the story title pane streams old posts "river-style", right?

What if switching to "older first" makes only unread posts available, instead having both "Older/Newer First" and "All Posts/Only Unread" switches like on Google Reader? That might be an easier solution short term, and usually solves what most users need of this view. Just make sure you don't instantly hide read posts, leave them on the list until you switch to another feed/group.

Does that help?

yeah, I would love to set all feeds to oldest-to-newest. I read by folder, not by individual feed, so the current "read this feed backwards" setting doesn't help me.

I would love this too!

An easy litmus test for whether a possible solution works: serial webcomics, like Questionable Content. Right now, I'm set to "Open the oldest unread story," so I get the next comic I haven't seen when I click the feed. Which is awesome! But I still have to scroll up to the beginning of each strip to read one, then scroll down through it, then scroll back up the comic again, past the punchline of the *next* comic, to hit the beginning of that next one. That means users are scrolling through
each item three times--up to the top of an item, reading down, up again to the next item--to consume it, instead of just scrolling down, which would be ideal.

Thanks!

In that case, you can just hit `m` to advance to the next oldest story.

By the way, this is the #1 issue that I'll be dealing with after I launch social. I'm wrapping up blurblogs now, so I'm hoping to launch the week after the July 4th holiday. Then I'm going to make oldest-first a real possibility. This will also have the effect of making river of news (reading by folders) much, much faster.

Whew, that took awhile. I don't want you all to get too excited, but here's a screenshot of the branch that I'm currently working on, scheduled to launch about a week after social launches next Monday/Tuesday (uggg, waiting on press so we can launch).

And just like view settings (original/feed/story), there's a global preference that you can override on a per-site basis, just as pictured above.

Also, river of news (reading by folder) is now instant, regardless of how many sites you have. (OK, it can take up to 1 second if you have > 50 sites you're reading from, but that's more about fetching the appropriate stories than it is figuring out which stories belong in the river.)

Just to confirm, not yet launched, but will very, very soon now. In fact, I've been testing it on a branch and jesus I can't believe I went this long without oldest-first. You guys are right as usual.

There it is, oldest-first and unread-only are both launched on dev.newsblur.com. This will all be launching on www.newsblur.com late tonight (in prep for press tomorrow morning). Let me know if you spot any bugs, since I am doing my best to fix any and all bugs today in prep for the big launch.

Also, the river of news (reading by folder) is now instantaneous, just like sites. Try clicking on Everything, even with hundreds of sites. Magic!

Yes and no. The existing app can't, but Roy is working on an update that will be released soon. If he can't get it in this week (we need to ship soon to have the best product before Y Combinator's Demo Day), he'll ship it shortly after that. So expect it within a few weeks, along with blurblogs in iOS.

There is, but I seemed to have misplaced it. Regardless, there definitely will be as soon as I re-build the preference. It's certainly supported and the intention is that you just override whatever default you have setup, so it'll be best of both worlds.

thanks. Please attend tomorrow's 9:30am postmortem on the feature omission. We'll discuss ways to prevent this sort of error in the future, which has a detrimental effect to our six sigma efforts. Any input you have to add meaningful, actionable metrics to the release process is appreciated.

Hi Samuel,

Starting yesterday my "unread only" stopped working. Now shows all stories regardless of the configuration. I have to hit "n" to find the next unread story.

Also, and that happened from the beginning, I always have to click the feed a second time, after reaching the end of the stories, to load another batch of unread stories, since it not is loading all the unread from the first read.

Thanks for the hard work.

Are there plans to have oldest-first (or other sorting) in the Android client? I ask before I get ready to hack on the source and give a pull request for it :)
