What does "Real-time" / "feed push" mean?

Under "Statistics & History", I can see that some of my feeds are checked in "Real-time Supplemented by checks". I suspect this is synonymous with having timestamps under "feed push." I'm curious what this means, as I'm not familiar with RSS or ATOM supporting a push model. Quick Googling isn't answering my question. Assuming it's just a standard I'm unaware of, I'll be perfectly happy with being pointed at it.
