The service now seems to be back to normal, but I think a lot of the community anger over this is not simply due to the outages and slow response times; I know that the service is fairly experimental still. I think a lot of the community unhappiness comes from the lack of communication.
We get a fair amount of "we'll keep you updated", and "we're monitoring it", but with very little follow through. Explaining what went wrong, and why would go a long way to making this feel more like a community and less like a "them & us" arrangement.
