I’m royally pissed.

When I'm using my NS7II, I'm losing sound and experiencing USB drop outs

Computer: Macbook Pro

Product: Numark NS7II using MAC OSX 10.9 - 10.10 DRIVER V3.2.0.2 from numark.com/microsites/ns7ii#drivers

Software: Serato DJ 1.7.5 (nothing else running on system during use, and wifi turned off)

Instructions followed:
- Serato DJ: support.serato.com/hc/en-us/categories/200176274-Troubleshooting-Optimization
- Numark: numark.com/kb/article/1539

I've tried:
- Buffers at 20 and 20, but have tried them at all settings with no difference.
- All three USB ports on my Macbook. Also took Macbook in to Apple to have ports tested. They are issueless.

Gigs affected: 4 x 5 hours
Dropouts per gig: 14 - 22
Description of issue: Sounds stops, controller becomes unresponsive. Serato DJ still running, controller still showing active levels and tables still spinning. Must restart controller. Time between dropouts varies from immediate dropout to 2 hours between.

I'm irate to say the least. If I posted this based on how I feel after months of research and choosing this over the DDJ-SZ, this post would be only expletives and utter profanity.

I've had the controller 10 days. If this issue isn't fixed in 10 more, the unit is being returned for refund.

  • That sucks.

Have you tried a different USB cable? I know it sounds super basic but I thought I'd ask.

  • Yes I have. From the one that came with the unit (which should have been the only one i needed) to two I had already, to a new $45 one I purchased from Long & McQuade.

Basic, yes, but worth the ask anyway. Any help is appreciated, thank you.

  • Curious if your issue is even related to audio. Your specs look good. The only real difference between you and I is RAM and our video chipset. I don't have an issue with freezes at all.

Makes me curious if the issue you're experiencing is related to Serato and the way it makes us of your NVIDIA graphics card..

It would be cool if you knew anyone else who has a NS7II that you could test with.

  • Interesting. But, how would the graphics card stop audio? I'm running the 17" at 1920 x 1440. Which may account for the different card, or one of us may have chosen an upgrade at time of purchase. I maxed options on my system when I ordered it.

Just to be safe, I'm going to see if there is an update for my card. Thanks for catching that difference. Though, it wouldn't make any sense if that was the cause, with the exception of Serato DJ struggling with my display.

  • I didn't even catch the 17", that must be nice. :)

Serato still needs to decode the audio file and send it down the USB to the control surface. Maybe someone from Numark can jump in and explain the workflow (what does what). If Serato decides the audio files and for some reason it's having an issue when rendering graphics, maybe that's to blame.

I'm shooting in the dark. Hopefully they figure something out for you.

  • Hopefully, because I'm already running the latest update for my graphics card. And yes, the display (matte) is brilliant and hasn't hickupped in 5 years. But who know what quarrels its having with SDJ behind the scenes. I'll wait to hear from the Numark people while continuing my research. Thanks again.

  • Hello Everyone,

Thanks for posting Mr. Good. Sorry to hear about your troubles. Mike Smith, thanks for chipping in here and attempting to help him out.

Just a general rule of the thumb, make sure you always have the latest drivers installed for both your video card, USB ports, and your processor. I've been using my NS7II for over a year now and I DJ every single weekend. I've never experienced my master sound from cutting out. One time one of my channels did but that was due to a terrible ground and outlet that I was plugged into. I ended up plugging it into a surge protector to rectify my symptoms. Make sure you're doing the same too.

At one of my gigs that I do a few times a month, I spin mainly electro house music at the club and it's pumping pretty loud from for over 4 hours. I make sure it's plugged into a surge protector, my master volume is no higher than 12 to 2 o'clock, my channels gains are at 12 o'clock and the sound is perfect. Not once did I lose master audio. Now, for this amount of time, your NS7II is going to get hot. Really hot inside the unit. Make sure your NS7II is sitting a wide, open, vented area while your DJing to allow proper airflow.

Lets make sure your computer is optimized. Since you're using a MAC, try out the optimizing steps below:

    * Mac Optimization Guide for Serato DJ users using Mac OS X
    * Advanced Mac Optimization for Serato DJ - Video

I always recommend to connect your NS7II to the USB port closest to your power supply. That port will always draw the most power to your DJ controller. Try a different USB cable. Sometimes a simple thing like a USB cable can play the middle man with these symptoms.

It's also very important that prior to DJing, any new songs you added to your song database gets fully analyzed in Serato DJ to ensure smooth and functional playback. If you have a corrupt file in your Serato DJ database, this could cause these symptoms. I recommend deleting any file with a lightning bolt next to it from your Serato database. This means deleting not only from your crate but from your ALL location in Serato DJ. Fore more information on corrupt files in Serato DJ, check out the links below:

    * Re-encoding corrupt files using iTunes
    * What are corrupt files and how do I fix them?

    I hope this helps!

  • Chris D, ok first of all, the edit you've done to the title of my posting is incorrect. Neither myself nor any of the other complainants I have read on this forum or others have needed 4-5 hours for the system to cut out. I don't know why you would change the title, nor why you would change it to imply that the NS7II can work fine for 4-5 hours. There is nothing in my post that supports that, and that seems like an edit done to benefit Numark.

Next, let's go through your response:

All my drivers are and have been up to date.
It's great that your NS7II works, but seeing that mine does not, the point is mute.
I've never had a channel problem, though I did need a fiddle with the channel gains once when it seemed that the unit didn't recognize that it was turned up. But that was when I first tested the unit.
I am using a pretty serious surge protector, only because I'm used to it and always have so that my Mac is protected.
Master volumes and channel gains are 12 o'clock.
I have no corrupt files. All files are 192 - 320 bitrate. I play a venue and use studio monitors. When the NS7II is working, the sound quality is glorious. All tracks have been fully analyzed, and I've even been through them for manual changes to the beat grid, and setting cue points and loops. I have no lightning bolt tracks.
I have a 40" high DJ table, that has a flat top and no surrounding panels. To the left and right are my sl1200s. My Mac is on a raised stand. It's all air flow up there. But truth be told, the controller has only gotten mildly warm to the touch. In contrast my Mac is much warmer.
My Mac has been optimized as per the links you referenced which I've already seen.
I'm using the USB port closest to the MagSafe port, and as stated in my original post, I've had the ports tested at the Genius Bar.
USB cable usage has already been addressed in this thread.

So, while I am grateful for your response, minus the bias and incorrect edit of my post's title, I've already addressed your suggestions because I researched before I posted this.

Please let me know the next step.

  • This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Numark NS72 loses control after pop/click.

I could be djing for 1 hour or 30 minutes and I experience this random pop that loses controller function, audio still flows but to reagin controller function, I have to reconnect USB.
