NS7II perform better with USB 3.0 and Windows 8?

I was just told that my NS7II can not be fixed (was freezing during gigs) and I am getting a new one. Does the NS7II perform better with USB 3.0 and Windows 8? I was thinking of running this when I get the new replacement controller.

  • Freezing or just unresponsive? If you're talking about play for five mins and then controller no longer works, that is usually indicative of usb drop out or starting up incorrectly. I use Windows 8.1 laptop and either usb 3.0 or a usb 2.0.

  • And I've had the problem I just mentioned even after making sure drivers and version were up to date and computer was optimized both ways, standard and advanced optimization.

  • Mine just froze while music kept playing. During a 5 hour set it froze after maybe one hour and then 2 or 3 more times after that... Pc meets requirements with Windows 7 but was thinking of trying windows 8 if that is more stabil.

  • I usually had an issue of being unresponsive within the first 15 mins. After shutting everything down and restarting everything the problem went away. Once computer has rebooted (while ns7 ii is off) plug in the ns7 ii via usb, load up serato dj (all the way (all crates have loaded)), turn on the ns7 ii listen for the chime that indicates an external drive was plugged in and off to the race I went. I did a 9 hour charity event without one single issue from the controller. I wasn't doing a lot scratching. I have no idea about the stability of 7 vs 8 or 8.1. I bought a new laptop when I bought the ns7 ii. It was my first controller and laptop pairing.

  • When it was unresponsive, the music was still playing for me as well. While practicing I've had the unit go unresponsive when backspinning and manipulating the pitch bend.

  • Hello Stg,

Thanks for posting! First, the NS7II drivers and Serato DJ's latest version fully supports Windows 8 and USB 3.0. Sometimes, some USB ports work better than others. Make sure your computer is optimized. For information on this, see below. I always recommend to try to exceed the minimum specifications for both the Serato DJ software and your NS7II.

If you'r using a PC, try out the optimizing steps below:
    * PC Optimization Guide for Serato DJ users using Windows 8
    * Advanced PC Optimization for Serato DJ - Video

If you're using a laptop, I always recommend to connect your NS7II to the USB port closest to your power supply. That port will always draw the most power to your DJ controller. Try a different USB cable. Sometimes a simple thing like a USB cable can play the middle man with these symptoms.

Ensure your DJ controller and your entire setup is connected to a properly grounded power surge protector or power strip. I've even experienced for myself that if I'm at a gig and the DJ booth has a poor surge protector or outlet, my DJ controller would experience erratic behaviors regarding the platters, sound, etc.

It's also very important that prior to DJing, any new songs you added to your song database gets fully analyzed in Serato DJ to ensure smooth and functional playback. If you have a corrupt file in your Serato DJ database, this could cause these symptoms. I recommend deleting any file with a lightning bolt next to it from your Serato database. This means deleting not only from your crate but from your ALL location in Serato DJ. Fore more information on corrupt files in Serato DJ, check out the links below:

    * Re-encoding corrupt files using iTunes
    * What are corrupt files and how do I fix them?
    * Troubleshooting freezing and crashing while Analyzing Files

If symptoms persist, sometimes I have found that lowering the Maximum Screen Updates Per Second in Serato DJ and adjust the USB buffer settings, improves the symptoms, and in some cases completely resolves the issue. See the steps below.

Lowering the Maximum Screen Updates Per Second & Increasing USB Buffer Size (Both Windows & Mac)
    1. Open Serato DJ.
    2. Click Setup from the top menu.
    3. Click the Library + Display tab
    4. Adjust the Display slider to 20 or 30. If you still experience clicks and pops after setting to 20 UPS try lowering the slider.
    5. Click the Audio tab
    6. Adjust the Audio slider to 10 or 20. If you still experience clicks, pops and dropouts then set your latency settings to 20.
    7. Close the Setup.

Lastly, before your gig, follow the directions below:

    1. Connect and power on the NS7II
    2. Open Serato DJ
    3. On each deck, fully turn, clock and counter clock wise, the Start and Stop Time knobs prior to DJing. This will ensure that the NS7II is properly communicating with Serato DJ.
    4. As a good practice , we also recommend moving the Pitch Sliders, Crossfader and Channel Sliders up and down prior to DJing. Again, this will ensure that the NS7II is properly communicating with Serato DJ.

I hope all of this helps!
