Platter issues NS7ii with Serato DJ 1.7.3 on Yosemite

Just bought a new macbook and Ns7ii is not working properly. The BPM gage turns into like 8 random numbers and the platter on deck A having some issues like playing in a slow motion and not getting up to speed, not playing at all. Controller works perfect on my older HP Envy with Windows 8.1 as of yesterday.

  • Hello Tony,

Welcome back to the forum. I'd like to help. I'm not quite under your statement "the BPM gage turn into like 8 random numbers". Can you send me a screen shot or a video of this? Can you elaborate a little further as to what you mean? If your platter is having a hard time keep up to speed then you're experiencing USB dropouts. It's important that you try out and follow the steps below to help you out.

Removing a Device from MIDI Studio (Mac Only)
    1. Open a new finder window and navigate to Applications > Utilities.
    2. Double click Audio MIDI Setup.
    3. Select Window from the top menu and ensure that MIDI Studio is checked.
    4. With the Numark controller disconnected click the Numark USB Audio Device.
    5. Click Remove Device from the top of the MIDI Studio window.
    6. Reconnect your Numark Controller.

Lowering the Maximum Screen Updates Per Second & Increasing USB Buffer Size (Both Windows & Mac)
    1. Open Serato DJ.
    2. Click Setup from the top menu.
    3. Click the Library + Display tab
    4. Adjust the Display slider to 20 or 30. If you still experience clicks and pops after setting to 20 UPS try lowering the slider.
    5. Click the Audio tab
    6. Adjust the Audio slider to 10 or 20. If you still experience clicks, pops and dropouts then set your latency settings to 20.
    7. Close the Setup.

  • Why are there usb dropouts with the ns7 2 on a fully loaded brand new MacBook pro? I also have a sl3 with 2 tt hooked up to serato dj with 0 issues with same settings.
    • Hello Tony,

You must remember that USB dropouts aren't due to your NS7II, but they're due to connection between your computer, your Serato DJ software and then the NS7II. It's combination of everything. Your NS7II solely is not giving you USB dropouts.

The Serato Software will create what's known as an isochronous stream of audio data over the USB bus. That is, it is 'fed' at precise intervals from our USB buffer. If for some reason what is in the buffer can not be fed onto the bus, the USB dropout indicator may light, and more often than not, you will hear an audible click or glitch in the audio. This is a USB dropout.

      What causes USB dropouts?

As explained above, maintaining an isochronous stream requires 'stuff' to happen at a certain time, with a 1ms (millisecond) USB buffer size the program only needs to send about 350 Bytes of data each ms over USB, but this needs to happen every millisecond, otherwise you'll (obviously) experience a dropout.

The work is done by the CPU and the USB controller, which are under the control of a few co-operative things; the operating system, the BIOS, and drivers, ultimately at the request of the audio application. If one of these isn't behaving correctly, or can't perform it's work in time, you can guess the result.

The first thing is to check if the CPU is busy doing something else, or is not up to the task of feeding the buffer and feeding the buffer to the USB:

  • This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Serato DJ audio dropout error with NS7ii (audio stream died, restarting) log incl....

I have had a NS7ii controller for about 6 months now and have used serato DJ since I got it. Everything has worked perfectly up until about a week ago. I have had 2 1-1.5 hour sets where there was 1 time each where the sound cut out for about 3 seconds and then it just comes back like everything is normal. My CPU meter is never above 20% and i rarely if ever see any usb dropout lights or master limiter lights come on. I have no idea why this has happened 2 times but it is frustrating. Thankfully everything is responsive once the audio comes back and I don't have to restart anything.

My computer specs are as follows (i bought it new 6 months ago as well)
    ASUS Q550LF
    Intel Core i7-4500U processor
    8 GB RAM
    Windows 8.1
    3 USB 3.0 ports
1 TB HDD (where all my music is kept)

I am running Serato 1.7.2 and have been since it released about 2 months ago. I make sure to turn off wi-fi/bluetooth and close programs in background before starting to play. The only thing I can point to that has changed in terms of my cpu the last week was that a week ago I updated Avast anti-virus software to the newest version. I wonder if this could have anything to do with the audio dropouts....This morning I did a system restore to a point from 2 weeks ago (before I had any issues) and dj'd for 1.5 hours after without any issues (but im not sure the problem is fixed).... If anyone can help me I'd be greatly appreciated....here is the log (NOTE THAT the time at which the issue happened is 20:07:31 i believe (AUDIO STREAM DIED), and you can see that everything is back up at 20:07:34)
