Offerpop's New Voting Approach for Tug of War, Photo Contest and Fan Faves

We've made two significant changes to the voting functionality of Tug of War, Photo Contest and Fan Faves.

In addition to our 'single click voting' option, we've added an 'assured voting' option. It's useful for contests that involve a meaningful / valuable prize, where the winner is selected from the top vote-getters. An example of this is a travel photo contest where the winner gets two airline tickets. In this case, a marketer would check the 'assured voting' box in the campaign builder page, which inserts a Facebook Connect step in the voting process. This causes each vote to be connected directly back to the fan who submitted it, so that you'll be able to better track participants, validate each vote, and limit the ability for unruly fans to ‘game’ the contest.

'Single click voting' is ideal for campaigns that are more about engagement and creating fun discussions, like weekly Tug of Wars where viewers vote on their two favorite scenes from a movie. In this case, 'single click voting' is a great choice – it broadens fan participation and enhances virality.

In both the 'single click voting' and 'assured voting' modes, commenting is now independent of voting. We took this step to ensure that we’re in full compliance with the May 11 update to Facebook’s Promotions Guidelines. All fans now vote by simply clicking a vote button (shown in the image below). And they can comment as often as they like, which helps drive both participation and word-of-mouth.

Please let us know if you have questions about any of this. We think these changes will help marketers do an even better job of driving fan participation.

  • It doesn't seem like there's any viral distribution of a "Vote" ... is that correct? Is there a difference in the viral distribution if we use assured voting?

      Hi Adam,

      The voting action itself is not distributed virally within Facebook, but the Facebook comments can be posted to walls. Also if the campaign is fan-gated, the Facebook Like to the page adds to its virality.

      Some campaign types like Photo Contest also have Facebook Likes and Share options on entry tab pages.

      The voting behavior is similar with Assured Voting enabled.

    You will be able to modify the vote count during the middle of the campaign. Click on "manage entries" button on your offerpop dashboard and click on "Modify Vote Count" button for the entry for which you want to change the vote count.

    This change in vote count will also be reflected in the campaign under the "View Entries".

    In reports still it'll show the old counts, even though the modification will chnage in the campaign view entries.

    2)My second question is can a person like a picture in photo contest multiple times if the "assured voting " is uncheked ?

    A person is allowed to "Like" a photo only once , if they try to like the same photo " Like" button will be greyed out. Please find the screen grab of the same

    If Assured voting is enabled, then we track voters by Facebook profile IDs and they have to accept a FB permissions request before being allowed to vote. Because some users will be wary to grant permission to the app, there will be some expected drop off in participation rates so we tend to only recommend it for contests with prizes that are meaningful or of considerable value.

    When Assured Voting is not enabled we record the votes with IP address and browser configuration. Users who share the same IP address and browser configuration would be treated as if they were the same voter. An individual would be allowed to vote from different places or from different browsers but each combination will only be accepted once per time period specified for a campaign.

    If you've any questions please let us know, we'll happily assist you.

  • Hi there,

    I'm planning on using data from the tug-of-war mechanic to offer out tickets as prizes to people who enter. The actual vote isn't important, but as there's two different artists to choose from, this mechanic works nicely by giving me the email addresses of entrants & letting me know which artist they're interested in seeing.

    Is there a way I can stop the vote count from being displayed? From a professional point of view it would be better if it wasn't actually about the popularity of the artist.

    Let me know.

    Thanks,

    Jake

    Hi Jake,

    You can hide the vote counts for both sides by using the following css in the "Customize css" section under advanced options on the campaign edit page:

    div#Count1.TCount, div#Count2.TCount {
    display: none;
    }

  • Photo Contest voting options: If I select multiple entries and voting once a day does that mean that people can vote for as many pictures as they like, once per day? Will people be able to vote twice for the same pic? Thanks

    Hi Aundrey,

    If you enable "Allow voting for multiple entries" and "Voting limits" as once per day then users can vote for all the entries only once in a day.

    People will not be able to vote twice for the same entry.
