I’m sad

Cannot run Ribbon Hero 2. Re-installing doesn't work.

I can't run Ribbon Hero 2! I've had a similar problem with the first, but never got a response. In the first RH, I couldn't earn any points even when I completed the tasks required by the challenge. In this one however I just get an error message telling me to try to re-install Ribbon Hero 2. Which I've tried to no avail. Anything I can try? I really want to try this game.

  • Hi Karlo,
Sorry to hear you are having trouble with Ribbon Hero. Are you seeing an error message while trying to install or while trying to run the program after you have installed? What is the exact error message you see? Lastly, what operating system and version of Office are you using?

Hello Karlo. The Ribbon Hero team apologizes for the difficulties you are facing. Ribbon Hero 2 should definitely work in your environment. Are you running any language packs other than English on your system / Office installation? Please note that Ribbon Hero 2 will only work if your Windows & Office language is set to English.

Also, Ribbon Hero will try to log errors and store them in the directory:
    %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Office Labs\ Ribbon Hero 2\LogFiles

You can access that directory by pressing the Windows Key + R and copying & pasting it into the dialog.

If you have any log files, can you please attach/copy + paste them to your reply.

Thank you again and sorry for the inconvenience.

    Chad Waldman

  • Thank you for helping me solve this problem. I believe I don't use any language packs on my system or Office, other than setting the spellchecker to Spanish from time to time. Below is a copy of the log from trying to run Ribbon Hero 2 in Powerpoint. There were a few other logs, but they all describe the same error, regardless of the application.

Thank you for uploading the log. Can you also tell me the specific version of Office you are running. You can find out by opening any of the Office applications (such as Word) and clicking on File, then Help. On the right hand side under About Microsoft Word, the Version should be listed.

    Thank you,
    Chad

  • Hi there.
I have _exactly_ the same problem.
    Office Pro Plus 32bit on Win7 64bit.

English language on Windows with swedish keyboard layout.

In Office I have English as editing language (Swedish is installed). English as Display and Help language (swedish is installed).

Have tried to install MANY times. the install works perfectly and RH starts with the animation and all. But when Word starts I get the error message.

  • The versions of Office you are running are tested and should work. Ribbon Hero is an add-in but needs a deep integration into Office to track usage. The error message you are seeing is that our code to connect to Office failed to connect. We have seen this before but it has usually been related to users running an unsupported version of Office. Re installing Ribbon Hero will probably not work. There is something in your setup of Office that is not as expect but I cannot figure out what... 

This is strange, I have an older laptop with a similar setup and it works fine. Is there anything at all I can try to make this work?

  • I also can't run ribbon hero 2. My computer is only 2 weeks old and we're using windows 7. I previously used office 2007 and windows xp and I was confident. Now we've upgraded to office 2010 and windows 7 and everything seems strange so I want the paperclip to help me when I get stuck as I'm not really computer savvy. When I try to run it, it's coming up with some message about the .msi file being suspicious. I don't even know what a msi file is, so I don't know what to do.
    • Chad Waldman (Software Developer) March 05, 2012 17:59
I'm sorry you are running into problems. The msi file is the installation file for ribbon hero (RHSetup.msi). If you downloaded it from Ribbonhero.com, it is safe and you can ignore the warning you are receiving. Do you know what program the warning is coming from? Maybe an antivirus software? Can you ignore it and still install Ribbon Hero?
