I’m disappointed

Onkyo quality and service sucks.

After my TX-SR706's HDMI ports failed (were not passing through signal at all), I sent my 60 month old unit to the closest service center, which happened to be Denver, CO (I'm in CA). I am told they received my receiver on 7/1/09, and when I called today (7/15/09), they have still not even diagnosed the unit.

There are clearly two problems here:

1. A 6-month old receiver failed.
2. Fixing it takes 3-4 weeks.

Needless to say this was my first and will be my last Onkyo device.

  • I have always used Pioneer or Denon, but my brother bought onkyo. He had it 3.5 yrs, and used it probably 10 times. I pulled it out to connect an HDMI cable, it wasn't knocked, dropped or damaged in anyway. It was resting on a drawer, fully supported, yet it went into circuit protection mode. It cost me 40 dollars to ship, because as one tech put it, ONKYO doesn’t distribute parts and send info, even to “Authorized Repair Centers.” They are merely to send it to ONKYO. They figured out the problem in a couple of weeks and I authorized 125.00 to fix it. Almost 3 Months have gone by, and they just barely got around to ship it. They would return any emails, I got the run around on the phone, and even Fry’s couldn’t get any info. So 165.00 and 3 months later, I am still waiting and still don’t know why it went into CP mode. I have had a Denon for 10 years and it has been through hell, never having had one single problem. ONKYO Sucks! Their Service Sucks. Their product sucks. Their employees suck.

  • I have a similar issue with an Onkyo TX SR804. The HDMI input quit operating. The unit is out of warranty, so I traced the problem to the specific circuit card (buckled traces on the HDMI connectors (they have only had cables connected to them twice, no stress, etc. what garbage). I contacted Onkyo, they will not sell the circuit board to me, I have to send the unit in to their service center, $50 each way to Denver, wait, pay their service guy to figure out what I already did, and then pay for the replacement board, which may or may not fail just as easily.

I own Panasonic gear, they have let me order parts (broken by my clumsiness not because they were poor quality) without issue. I have had quality help and service from Adcom and Audio Research.

Onkyo doesn't get another penny from me, EVER! Business must be good for them if they can treat their customers so well, NOT!

  • I’m pissed
About a year after I purchased my Onkyo TX SR804 the HDMI inputs stopped working. Onyko helpfully told me it was out of warranty. I had to spend $225.00 to have it fixed. Now two years later same thing. After the money I spent on this receiver the only way I can express my disappointment is never to buy another Onkyo product again!
